Gruul pug groups are funny. They all want to be jews and hardres something, but it never works out:

My subjective opinion without analyzing any of the metrics, going solely based off the amount of discussion and attention I see WoW Classic get online in the circles I frequent, would suggest it's in a lull. Streams that used to get 400-500 viewers, higher for special content like speedruns, now hover between 200 and 300. Upvotes and comments are lower across the board on r/classicwow. The various Classic WoW Discords I belong to (servers, guilds. classes, etc) are dead or dying. The smaller ones have a handful of people regularly playing WoW Classic.

There might be a revitalization in activity when Classic+ is officially announced but the current content on offer simply does not appeal to the historic vanilla/2019 Classic playerbase.

Do you know anyone playing MOP? Raiding Era? A few people in my circle play TBC Anniversary but even they bemoan the accelerated timeline and difficulties of recruitment.

DPS on a good day are impatient and want to sneed before a single sunder goes out, which adds to the fun. the best part about tbc dungeons are the constant aggro dumps, stuns, knockdowns etc where you have to fight for dear life to get threat back because tclap and shout do fuck all threat. consecrate is still ticking when you're knocked down and mobs stick to you like glue, same goes for when aggro is dumped.
groups straight up knock you back if you are a warrior trying to get heroics going, not so much if you're geared but good luck if you are starting out. shit sucks and it only gets worse in wrath

warrior gets an ability Intimidating Yell which slows down enemies in an AoE and deal damage to them while gaining rage
warrior gets an ability Big Breaking which breaks the legs of all enemies in an AoE and roots them in place
warrior gets a Squire follower that can growl and do secondary tanking mechanics
warrior gets a ranged damage attack ability called Heroic Shot which lets him use his ranged weapon to deal damage to enemies, he doesn't have to stand still while casting it because he's a Hero and heroes are always on the move
warrior gets a passive called Victory Rushing which means that he heals all allies to full health every time his rage hits 0
warrior can now call the King or the Warchief to send an instantenous transport carriage to the location and send party members to anywhere in the world
warrior can also apply all the epic Warcry and Aura buffs on the entire raid because he's the warrior
but warrior can't go into stealth, because that would be imbalanced

Help me understand the different versions splintering the player base. It seems to assume that if a certain version of the game wouldn't be available, they would all come to what I assume is the version you want to play.
What if I have gotten vanilla, tbc and wotlk out of my system? I have farmed netherwings, ogrilas, i have defeated and farmed hard mode ulduars, heroic trial of the crusader and heroic icecrown citadel, hell I even farmed the jousting tournament, cooking dailies, fishing, basically everything these expansion had to offer that I know that the average classic andy doesn't do outside of pvp. Why would I want to return to these expansions? People who wanted off this ride have jumped off long ago.
These arguments sound like they're coming from some streamer who just wants to grift people and their money without ever thinking about the existing player base. I feel that every expansion deserves at least one re-release.
The only thing I would be willing to backtrack for would be the classic+. And with just one character, do all the content. I suspect that the all the friction without any nostalgia would make people realize that they don't want that after all. Sure many people would force themselves to play since they've shilled it for so long and stopping would mean admitting that they were wrong.

I guess maybe it's less about splintering the playerbase and more about being able to make the progression servers the best they can be. Marketing and maintaining a bunch of different versions of the game seems like a lot of plates to spin and also kind of makes it less special.
