Part of the reason Shadow got so attached to Maria is because she understood him right from the start. Even though he looked intimidating, she showed him real kindness and never made him feel alone or like an outsider. Keep in mind Shadow was already cold and merciless long before she was killed. But Maria was different. She could look past the cold exterior and see what was in his heart.Anyone who can't see who Shadow is deep down can't be a Maria. He needs the complete opposite of enemies to lovers. If we're talking about what's strictly in-character, if the girl (or guy I guess) ever doubted Shadow or started off as his enemy, it's realistically already over.
