343 outsourced CEA and H2A to Saber Interactive for FREE using the inferior PC ports as the base and Sean Cooper spent 5 years fixing the broken ports

343 outsourced terminals in Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary to Sequence

343 outsourced Reach DLC maps (Defiant Map Pack/Anniversary Map Pack) and Halo 4 DLC maps to Max Hoberman and Certain Affinity (multiplayer, online, and UX design lead for Halo 2 and Halo 3)

Halo 4 campaign just feels half-baked. It has sections that feel empty, lacking content. Removed point scoring. As a result, the timer was also removed(used for speed runs). You can't view the campaign terminals ingame; you must go to waypoint. Forge Island gives us ten times less budget than Forge World. Removed Race, Territories, Stockpile, Headhunter, and Juggernaut. “Infinity” gametypes include instant respawn, perk packages and customized loadouts (COD). "Legendary" gametypes fixed this.

Halo 4 and part of Halo 5 are the only game 343i actually put together themselves with their in house studio, MCC and especially infinite has been nothing but wrangling contractors and contract studios. Infinite has something like 5 confirmed studios that worked on it. That is why their dev cycle takes so long and fucks shit up constantly(besides the technical debt). 343 is just an umbrella studio that directors other contract studios into making broken messes of games. Its why everything except Halo 4 is a broken retarded mess because Halo 4 was the only 343i title actually done in house and not through 20 corporate suit games of telephone and Zoom meetings

If this is true then this might be the biggest issue with the entire game. Elite combat is one of the best parts of CE and that being neutered is a serious black spot that risks overshadowing everything else it does well.

The thing is, I haven't really obviously noted this myself. Admittedly CE is my least played Classic Halo game, but they seem fine to me, I think? Do you have any clear cut examples of this? I saw HiddenExperia say that the AI was acting up and getting caught on shit and not going aggro, which is it's own issue, but that's not quite the same thing as the AI when aggro'd and in combat being worse then in CE/Reach

If it is an issue I really hope it's something they can patch and I hope the community draws enough attention towards it.

Can't say I yearn for dual-wielding again but it really is doable going forward. Thinking about the combined force of two weapons firing at once presents the obvious counter-measure to the power one has. Recoil, stability, spread, reload time, etc. so many ways to mix 'n' match trade-offs one must deal with for that power.
We'd have it already if they weren't instead putting that effort into various abilities. We can even have both. Super-soldier moving very fast? Alright, accuracy and stability penalties. Let them stack with the dual-wielding trade-offs.
It doesn't have to be 100% realistic but taking notes from what shooting is like when running IRL (much less when using two guns) is a much saner approach than plastering armor in thrusters.

Halo was already making room for all sorts of crazy, different rule sets, sometimes in modes that were just meant to be goofy but creative fun.

Halo 3 imo was the most well-rounded. Just needs some rebalancing (dual-wielding as a whole needs buffed damage or accuracy to make it go up against the BR), and they need to figure out a way to let you toss grenades and use scopes while dual wielded (Ultimate firefight has already partially solved this btw, you can scope while dual-wielded). And instead of abilities just have one-time use equipment. The grappleshot can stay, but once you use it, that's it. No stacking or having multiple uses. And then you can buff it too to make it worth fighting over (such as increasing ranging, having it stay in the environment longer for others to use, for example after you shoot it at a wall, it becomes a zipline. Then after a few seconds it disintegrates. Nerf the bubble shield to take damage like in Reach, don't make it completely useless like the drop wall in infinite. Also, Needler needs to stay dual-wieldable even in the 3 Remake. And please buff the spikers so they're not completely useless.

Depends on the next game's BR and what weapon takes the top spot and by how much. Aside from that, I agree there are various concepts that can be improved rather than simply cut. The challenge with game design isn't usually if an action can be translated to game mechanics but what is the best way to actually do so. Bungie wasn't perfect but both them and a lot of players still enjoyed what was delivered because they were constantly adding big new features alongside the gameplay mechanics. Now though Forge, File Share and various other complex matters are basically solved, only needing so many upgrades each new game, so there's room to go back and tackle stuff that could be better.

But to further elaborate, leadership at 343 for along while was obsessed with trying to capture a larger audience, forgetting that Bungie Halo already pushed that audience threshold to the max. Sure, Halo is a FPS, but it is still very unique. It’s the Xbox Mario or Zelda, an experience you just couldn’t get out of any other game.

343 actively sought to take the Halo out of Halo, making it a watered down generic FPS experience that you can get out of COD, Apex or Overwatch.

Halo 1 all the way up to Halo 4 built upon the same aiming model. Same system more or less with slight tweaks or improvements, it’s the signature of that halo feel.

Halo 5 ripped this system out and replaced it. While not awful, it was not a step in the right direction.

Halo Infinite again changed this system. This time making it AWFUL. It is basically a straight copy of Call of Duty or Apex legends aiming, the aiming works for those games because their gameplay is built around ADS. Halo is not.

Play Infinite then play Halo Reach. Walking is different, aiming is different, meleeing the environment gives no unique feedback anymore, vehicles are watered down, sounds are different, the list goes on.

I'm pretty burnt out on vanilla CE, so the more a mod changes stuff even if unnecessary, the better. And then you factor in the genuinely fun, silly chaotic gameplay with all the variety and changes they've added that make you want to try every weapon and vehicle variant. Even the grenades are fun and silly.

So I'm a bit disappointed that 343 went out of their way to add sprint, but not dual-wielding. It shouldn't have either, but if you're gonna add one, along with a bunch of new weapons anbd other chnanges, why not just go all the way. It's already not a faithful remake, so you've already ruined the original experience. The weapon balance has already been mucked with with all the added weapons and modified damage/properties (like hunters not dying to one shot pistol anymore), so it honestly doesn't matter anymore.

This reminds me of how I've long found it strange that they continued to ignore (in my eyes) how being able to flee in these other games is to an extent countered by how much of the arsenal can 1-shot a person or take them down in a few hits, which is not the case for most Halo weapons.
Even the way taking someone down is in many ways easier means a lot for how many people are willing to put time into it, because it's much easier to feel you got some kind of win. Just so many things that people paid to think about games all day won't acknowledge. It's really unfortunate.

So I just watched all the cutscenes for Halo 5 and Halo Wars 2.
What is it with 343 and being so desperate to artificially build up their own OCs? There's so little effort put into it.
Locke is just thrown in your face and the game REALLY wants you to know how competent and cool he is.
He brags to multiple preestablished characters about saving their lives, and then of course he saves Chief as well.

And then Atriox has to be the most forced villain in gaming, at least that I've seen. They went way too hard on the "oh no! no no no no... it's HIM!" They really wanted their "all that for a drop of blood" moment with him beating up 3 spartans. None of it felt earned at all.

Classic Halo lore was written by Joe Staten and Eric Nylund.

The UNSC, Halsey, Captain Keyes, ODSTs, SPARTAN-II, John-117, Blue Team and Keyes Loop, SPARTAN-III, Onyx were all Nylund.
Master Chief (in-game), Cortana, Captain Keys (in-game), Johnson, 343 Guilty Spark, Covenant, Arbiter, Elites, Prophets, Alpha Team were Joe Staten.

Some say that Bungie retconned Nylund's books, but it's not true, they worked with him, using his ideas, and just wanted to tell their own take on the Fall of Reach.

Frank O'Connor wrote an outline for Halo 4-6 and gave it to several different writers. Greg Bear (RIP) wrote Forerunner lore for The Didact and The Librarian, Karen Traviss wrote post-Halo 3 lore that ties into Halo 4/5. Brian Reed wrote Halo 4's Spartan Ops campaign (which is why it feels so different from the campaign) and later wrote Halo 5.

Brian Reed wrote Halo 5 and going by Reed's interview before release he was trying to force players to like Locke and Osiris over Chief and Blue Team. People on the Halo Waypoint forums got used to not explicitly call out his name as Brian Reed threads get locked on a regular basis.

Reed went on a social media blackout, masking his identity. As of today it’s practically impossible to reach out to the man without some serious digging or a direct contact to 343i.

They had Halo 4-6 planned out in terms of story, Brian is said to have deviated far from that and used his own vision and ideas instead.

The Forerunner trilogy was a total disappointment. The Halo 3 Terminals told a simple, sad, and cryptic yet powerful story about a race of gods destroyed by their own arrogance and refusal to deal properly with a threat they didn't understand. Then Greg Bear decided to bring us Space Kangz and pet care products that are actually gods and all kinds of other bullshit. Traviss is even worse because we should have seen it coming after the way she fucked up Star Wars with her furious Mando wank and lack of a sense of scale. I gave up on Halo a long time ago. Even the unsatisfying plot of Halo 3 seems like nothing now compared to the disaster that came after it.

Two entire trilogies were commissioned for the sake of promoting Halo 4 (The Kancer Traviss trilogy, and Greg Bear's Forerunner Trilogy), to say nothing about the Forward Unto Dawn movie.

Everything that was released in 2015, from the books, to the comics, and the garbage Nightfall movie were also all created with the intent to tie into Halo 5.

Halo 4 developement 343i started out strong. Armando Troisi who previously worked on both Mass Effect 1 and 2 as lead cinematic designer joined the team in July 2011 as narrative director. Christopher Schlerf who also worked on Mass Effect in the past created the original draft of Halo 4’s script. The narrative team was additionally supplemented by Lindsay Lockhart and Nathan Moller. The events of the 343 era will never be mentioned again. Halo Studios era will be the nostalgia bait era. Everything will revolve around Bungie games. Remakes, of course. ODST2 if you're super lucky. You're not that lucky Halo 7 will be about returning to the roots of the series. Arbiter, Master Chief, a funny sergeant. Osiris will either never appear again or they'll die off screen. You will have to fight the new Covenant that has been reborn under a new prophet. Second half of the campaign will see Flood unleashed once more and this time you have to finish off Gravemind for good. They'll double dip with the remake assets. Maybe even reuse old levels. You'll play a new Assault in the Control room and it'll be just like you remember it. 7 will be a Force Awakens / Rise of Skywalker type nostalgia fest.

I'd mostly respect the pacing if the game but I'd adjust the level layouts to be less repetitive and more varied. I think when it comes to Halo CE specifically, the combat loop is really important. I would put a lot of time and testing into making sure elites especially feel right.

The core 4 covies are best in CE and Brutes are best in 2 but ONLY because they differentiate from Elites so vividly.
Without Elites to fight, 3 Brutes are better served for the sandbox.
Flood are also best in CE and I'll die on that hill.
Prometheans are a strange case because while Knights are improved from 4 to 5, the overuse of soldier spamming and the fact that their weapons almost all auto track ends up making the faction actually overall more annoying in 5 than 4.
Not that it matters but the most fun human enemies to fight are actually in 4 at the start of the Shutdown level.

It's important to have the correct mindset about campaign v multiplayer. That being that a true Halo game is a campaign experience first and foremost.
I'd be perfectly fine with the CE remake having firefight or some other PvE mode as its "multiplayer" offering for this reason.
Halo CE/1 had multiplayer thrown in the game in the last few months of development for the same reason any multiplayer was in a console game at the time, it was just expected to be there. The campaign WAS the game, and the multiplayer was extra. Now, it did turn out to be really good and pretty addicting, but it's important to understand that this existed in mostly a party game atmosphere. Yes, there were comp tournaments, but they are not representative of the average Halo CE multiplayer session.
Halo 2, or really rather Xbox Live, changed this, and set this unrealistic standard of Halo multiplayer being the face of the series. It was never meant to last, but it stuck, even as CoD 4 and onwards drained the popularity 3 years later.

tl;dr
A PVE-only game is sorely needed at this point to correct this wrongdoing and artificial ballooning of Halo's multiplayer to be its core identity.

I guess some kind of explanation is in order. That is the Endless, a new ancient evil revealed near the end of the first Halo Infinite single player campaign titled "Become". The Endless is a species of alien imprisoned on the Zeta Halo ring (Installation 07) by the Forerunners. On the ring is a location known as "The Silent Auditorium" in which The Forerunners would pass judgement on The Endless before their imprisonment. The Endless as we know it is similar in appearance to those of the Cambrian Explosion approximately 541 million years ago on our own planet Earth. Pure speculation at this point, but this may be a new hint connecting Humans and Forerunners in the Halo series. Anyway, the only remaining member of The Endless that we know about is The Harbinger, who joins a faction of former Covenant known as The Banished, lead of course by the Brute War Master known as Atriox. She does so with the secret plan to use The Banished and their hold on the Zeta Halo ring to free her people from their ancient imprisonment and unleash them upon the unknowing Galaxy. Almost. Greg managed to write some ridiculous ideas (especially for Halo) in a compelling way, much like a good director or cinematographer can make something ordinary look extraordinary.
Really, both the Forerunners and Flood are more significant if, even while being noble and upright, the Forerunners truly had to use Halo to cleanse the galaxy. No politics and drama making them as petty as us but with way more advanced tech, no butchering other species because somehow no one could spread compelling proof of the Flood taking over various worlds (over 1000 years of this).
You could take a lot of Greg's ideas and remix them into an original virus horror IP and you'd have something great. He was very good at making that snowball of drama and desperation compelling. It would work even better in a setting where there wasn't highly advanced space tech that you just had to believe never spread solid proof of the threat to the masses.

Part of me think it highly unlikely but even things like making the vehicles have their more distinct colors again could be a promo tactic of sorts
We all saw 4 follow-up CEA so yeah no matter what improvements Evolved gets it's no guarantee of a brand new game's look
