I wouldn't say I love it, but I think it's alright at best. It feels more like a Metro game than STALKER though and I wouldn't even rank at it as being better than any of the games from the OG trilogy (CS is based and I'm tired of pretending it's not).

Any idea why my game goes full fisheye every time I boot it up?
I have to load it, go into settings, change FOV by any amout, safe settings, then save and reload that save.

Yeah, the thing is they revert to like 200 FOV every time I exit and re-enter the game, you can't even set the FOV this high in the game. I set the FOV to whatever and save it and play just fine but when I end the play session and re-start the game, it just goes back to this weird 200 FOV setting.
Like I said, even changing the FOV in the settings does nothing on its own, I have to change FOV setting back to what I want, then save game, and then load that save, for the FOV to go back to normal.

make your own modlist that captures a certain congruent theme (like vanilla+ to realism styles) and switch between playthroughs if you want. my modlist is pretty solid look

You know, to give it some credit and upon reflection I'll say that I think Clear Sky's hobo phase is the best out of the trilogy assuming you're playing close to vanilla. SoC will always be the best but suit upgrades are easy to find due to no repair or upgrade system and the economy is a joke; you're practically swimming in money after beating Agroprom.
I could even argue that Pripyat barely even has a hobo phase if you look around for the caches and how cheap Nimble's prices are on ordering literal end-game gear at the start - 60k for gear that will last you to the end of the game and you don't even have to wait in real time for them.

Cold Island is where Dalin did the 2nd Carribean Experiment. "Scar" and the Sparkers broke in and interrupted the experiment, which caused the cooling pond to freeze over, and created the anomalies outside the zone that destroyed Skiff's apartment.

It was also mentioned on the hand drawn map you could get for preordering STALKER 2, in the top right hand corner there is an are marked "snow??" which is a reference to Cold Island and the frozen cooling ponds.

It adds weapon upgrades like CS and CoP to SoC, but also reworks the UI and how it's all balanced. Some level geometry is getting changed and a couple new areas are being added, and there will be some quests added as well. There's a no character controller that makes movement more deliberate, but I don't know how I'll feel about that until I play it. Like I said, I'd like some more quests without going into full soup territory, but what I've seen of it looks really great for a vanilla+ style SoC mod, which tend to be my favorites outside of good freeplay, as in IWP/CotZ and not gaymma.

1. Equip the knife before heading to the surface. It's the only weapon that doesn't make a sound when you quickload or get on the ladder
2. Keep your flashlight off (NV is okay)
3. Never quicksave in a room with sleeping enemies. They aren't sleeping while the game is loading
4. Low crouch makes less noise than regular crouch
5. Bushes are loud as fuck, don't tough them
6. Right after you exit the tunnels, a patrol will spawn in and walk past you. Wait for them behind the trash can before you go
7. Enter the building through the main entrance exactly between 23:00 and 00:00, it's the only time when the third floor is empty. Make sure you let all soldiers exit if you're early
8. After collecting the documents, go to the roof and down the fire escape. The ladder is the hardest part, make sure to graze the wall while you fall or the sound will alert the enemies

I think part of the problem is that STALKER defined a good half of the modern tactical shooter (the other half is ofc Counter-Strike, CoDMW casualizes both) and so you get people both claiming that STALKER is something completely different and people claiming that STALKER is just "(shooter I like) but worse", so you get a lot of people who like it because it's the next best thing to something else, and the people who like STALKER for what it is (which is at least three different things) are right to resent them for that.

The problem with STALKER 2 is that it got too big - not in terms of scope, but in terms of intended audience. The XRAY STALKER games knew what they were, what they wanted to do, and were being made by people who wanted the game they were making, not a product or cultural touchstone.

There's a world where we could have gotten a STALKER 2 built on a version of XRAY that was unfucked by really, truly dedicated people, but the Russian invasion torpedoed that - it stopped being about being an artwork, and started being equal parts monument, funding source, and prestige project.
XRAY is too hard to work with, switch to Unreal, there's lots of people who know how to work with Unreal. Here, we got these artists from other game studios to sub in.

I disagree with the statement that stalker pioneered the tactical shooter. Stalker is a game built from western influence. It was years behind every other game released in its mechanics because of the culture barrier. In a similar vein basing the story off a book from 60 years ago makes the game feel even older.
This is a good thing though the non-apocalypse setting of the Zone is extremely unique and I think its what causes so many people to be drawn to it.
It distances it from fall-out and fall-out likes.
The genesis of tacticsloppers were games like Arma which though not affecting the larger population did affect the wider developer landscape.
However I do agree with the sentiment of your statement that it confuses the audience because between the three games so many of the core mechanics change, and modern audiences expect CoP when playing SoC.
This confuses people who expect parity along the trilogy.

The original Stalker 2 was being worked on and scrapped back in 2011/2012. Is the invasion responsible for that too? UE4 was being used at some point as well. They could've and should've stuck with it.

I'm not. I don't know why the game does this, it didn't use to do it then a couple days ago just started doing it all of a sudden. The FOV max is 110, this shit looks like 220. I play the game at 100, I save and quit. Next time I boot up the game, it's up to 220 again (But showing as whatever i have it actually set to in the settings) So I go into settings, change the FOV from 100 to 101 or 99, then save the game, load that save, and the game is on the proper FOV then. Every time I quit out of the game completely, rinse and repeat.

I will not get into the weeds with you on the general gameplay elements of STALKER, but what mechanics do you think were unique to stalker shadow of chernobyl alone, and specifically the "tactical" mechanics do you think were noteworthy?
As far as I'm aware, leaning was already in games. Sprint/walk/stand/crouch/prone was already in games (as of 07). Using medkits was already in games, as was bleeding. Maybe ammunition types? But I don't know if we can delineate ap/non ap from the existing "this ammo but stronger" type of gunplay that existed before.
Weapon attachments? I'm certain that was already a thing. Sound and visibility calls on the player were already a thing.
What else is there?

System Shock 2 came out in 1999 and had leaning (as did the first in 1994!), all of those movement options save for prone, medkits/toxic system (though this is more of an Resident Evil thing), and armor-piercing/hollow-point ammo types for different enemies

STALKER had mechanics that other games had, sure, but like Half-Life 1, it was the first one to put a lot of its mechanics in the same place.

Bioshock had a medkit hotkey and ammo types, I'll give you that, but it didn't have any of the inventory management that defines STALKER, imo.

System Shock 2 did a lot of the FPS-with-inventory stuff ShoC did, but it was also extremely clunky, even by the standards of the time - compare HL1 and SS2 and the difference is clear.

I THINK Deus Ex also had inventory management, but I'm ashamed to say I bounced off Deus Ex hard.
