Is AC8 the most dull moment in the series?
>Names on pilots helmets ripped straight from Top Gun: Maverick
>Quirky pink hair anime girl to distract you from the otherwise lifeless cast
>Superbugs being the hero plane to gobble Maverick's cock even harder
>Old ship being used in combat again trope like it hasn't been done better in BSG and EoTT
>Battlepass slop
>Arsenal bird but again
>Land battleship ripped from Project WingmanTM
>Exact same fucking gameplay for 20 years, there are itch.io AClikes with more innovation in the basic mechanics
>Boring modern setting flying the same planes we've been flying since Air Combat
>Legit there were bugs in Air Combat, in 1995, over 30 years ago
>No cool 6th gen shit, no COFFIN, No indication this series will EVER move beyond vaguely 4thgen jets, you fight fucking FOXBATS
>No radically branching choices like AC3
>(You) cockgobbling (this was always a thing in AC but it keeps getting worse each new game)
>Briefings nowhere near their peak in ACI, zero sauce
It feels like a game with zero risk, zero passion, zero innovation. Just formulaic greyscale noise to put on the Bamco spreadsheet.

I would rather have Assault Horizon again rather than this. An extremely flawed game but oh my god at least they tried to do something NEW FOR ONCE. People fawn over stupid shit like your player model moving their head in AC8, meanwhile there’s no innovation in the GAME part of the game.

This isn’t bait, I’ve played the whole series except for the GBA and phone games. There is an insane amount of cool shit you could do in arcade flight games. Maybe one of the indie AClikes will figure it out.

>>570811429
Why would you want to radically alter the gameplay? The gameplay in these games is great, no need to change huge parts of it just for the sake of changing shit. Different game series can experiment with new takes on the arcade air combat genre, AC only needs tweaks and refinements.

The reason for my concern.

AC7 I could forgive. AC8, in 2029? No, sir.

I would love AC0 in my collection, but at this rate, I'll only get 8 when it's 50% off like I did with 7.

I can't do it, guys. Just can't. It's becoming a clown show. A schizophrenic one.

>Old ship being used in combat again trope like it hasn't been done better in BSG and EoTT

I really don't see the big issues with these in particular.
>>
>>570815310
Not sure what you're expecting here, it's not like the fighter jet industry moved leaps and bounds since AC fucking 1. F-22 is still the peak of human ingenuity, and that thing went into production in 1996. Sure, they could pad the roster out with various concept models (or just make shit up), but part of the fun is being able to fly real fighter jets.

>>
>>570816357
>>570816917
What I'm reading here is:
Huge flying wings, drone swarms, and land battleship yamato... GOOD
But fighters more advanced than what has been seen in AC since Air Combat (the usual, realistic line-up)... BAD

That's the disconnect. Right there.

ACES is at the right juncture to go beyond what ACX offered many years ago. Instead of taking that second step forward, they are taking one step backward. Again, excusable in the case of 7. With 8, it is not.

This wouldn't be so concerning if they hadn't teased and put little references from 3 here and there for the past several years. It's one way or the other. Can't go both ways. And that's what they seem to be doing, judging from what's been shown.

An unfortunate turn of events so far. Hoping, as always, for an eventual reversal. A course correction towards what's been hinted at in the past.
>>
>>570818916
The point is not how advanced something is or isn't. Real-life logic doesn't apply to AC planes. The point is that people wanna fly real planes, and devs pay up the ass for licenses to have real planes. This is done very much on purpose. No one wants an assortment of Macross bootlegs from AC3, Instead, people want MSFS quality models and autistic detailing doing insane shit no plane in MSFS could do. That was always the appeal of Ace Combat.
>>
>>570818916
Flying real planes was always the entire point of AC
I don't care about this "disconnect".
>>
>>570819682
>people want MSFS quality models
You're not wrong but I would like MSFS quality models because, at least going by the system requirements, MSFS 2024 is gonna run better on older hardware compared to AC8.
>>
Is there any way to increase the resolution in AC6 recomp?
>>
>>570815310

>>570819682

>>
>>570818916
We haven't seen the full plane roster yet, have we? Story-wise the FCU being essentially left with outdated shitheaps makes sense, your "home base" Endurance is a relic they quickly dusted off and got seaworthy because they didn't have anything else.
We'll just have to wait and see what General Resource decides to send our way near the endgame.

Its not going to be on steam as a separate buy just like 5 isn't & 6 isn't up on xbox store. They are using a legal loop hole to put the game out with no license cost.

thats what me and this other anon and maybe some others are doin'
but when I get to 6 i'll try xenia and hope its playable

I really hate niggers who see planes and automatically think of Danger Zone and Tom Cruise.
>>
I haven't even seen Top Gun, either of them
>>
Whatever references they make to 3 in 8, I hope they're not super blatant. Kinda like Martha and Simon being Dr. Schroeder's assistants that only pops up in off hand dialogue, or Pops and Bartlett showing up on one version of Mayhem. Stuff like that is cute, AC isn't really a series that needs constant callbacks and returning characters imo.
>>
Well, Xenia is not much better. Missiles have trails, so that's good. But the cutscenes have the sound go in and out, seems like Xenia fixes the desync that way. Not a great experience, but for the lack of options, it'll do.

...Nah, fuck this. Maybe anons with better hardware will have better luck, but I'll just skip AC5 for now. Not being able to see my missile trails is way more of a problem than I thought - I fire them, and I can't tell if the enemy dodged, or if they're still flying towards the enemy. This makes combat feel like shit, and I can already imagine how much of a hassle the cutscenes will be. I don't wanna ruin my first impression of the game like this. Maybe some other time.
>>570829608
Really? Well, that's actually pretty common. That gen was a huge leap forward, so everyone wanted to show off right away. GTA 4 had physics and ragdoll tech that GTA 5 couldn't dream of, for example. Halo 3 was also more technologically impressive than the games that followed it, too.

When I played 6 a couple months ago you can definitely play it without the missiles, but you do notice it. SAM's sneak up on you sometimes and it's hell for dealing with tougher enemies. I thought there was a recent patch but I guess that was only for an FPS fix so the game runs at a stable 60.
>the next one is Joint Assault.
I hope you like your plane feeling like it's smothered in molasses the entire time. JA's such a bizarre game, in some ways I think it's worse than AH but they both have their own problems. JA does have the benefit of having Beff Jezos as the main villain though, that was funny.

>>
>>570829257
AC6 is a 360 game, not an og Xbox game.
It all comes down to figuring out how shit works; how the CPU works, how the GPU works, how the CPU and GPU work with eachother, how the drivers work, how the OS works, so on and so forth, and all of this is made more difficult with every missing piece of documentation or proprietary/custom part (in the case of the og Xbox for example, that thing had a custom GPU with fucktarded architecture, proprietary drivers and zero documentation - the PS3 arguably has a simpler GPU, and that one had a headstart on reverse engineering because of Nouveau's efforts and the fact that Snoy actually bothers to make decent fucking documentation for their consoles.)
Anyways, a lot of undocumented info must then come from the people interested in picking apart and reverse engineering console architecture (i.e. homebrewers and the like), which then relies on there being a healthy, unified community of people willing to do that kind of research. The PS3 has a lot of people like that, the Xbox 360 not as much - but still enough for projects like Xenia and its peers to exist - and the original Xbox even less so (with its library overlapping a lot with Playstation or PC, making it easier to just go for those instead).

>>570831519
Joint Assault is its own thing. With Jeff Bezos.
It's no ACX, that's for sure.

Listen I don't like that faggot either, mostly because he's somehow dumber than most 40kfags which is an impressive achievement, but from what little I've seen of his coverage of the press event, he seems like he at least gets Ace Combat on some level. I don't expect people to be as autistic about this series as I am, but what I do expect is a modicum of effort to get the series. The worst I've seen the more casual fans of the series do is spout unfunny memes like >>570838306 says. I don't think we really have anything to worry about, for now at least. Save the whining for if we get the Jojo or Yakuza treatment where half the fans are like, tertiary fans who only know about it through memes and videos about it. I'm literally one of those of Jojo/Yakuza 'fans' myself, I'm trying to finish Yakuza 7 and I want to try reading more of the Jojo manga but ADHD is a motherfucker when it comes to long franchises like those.

Secondaries play only the latest thing, or nothing at all and consume their favorite youtuber(s). You will see fanart and fanfics (often fujo ones) you won't agree with.

Nah the clouds and missile trails are the last things still messed up in the recomp (unless they’ve been fixed? seems not). AC6 was a very pretty game. Truly excellent graphics for the time. I remember playing the demo at a friend’s house as a kid and we were totally blown away by how photorealistic the intro at the airfield was, and then realizing the whole game looked like that was almost unbelievable. Ahh, when we could still truly be impressed by good graphics…

6 actually has a good story, it just also has the absolute peak cheesiest dialogue of the entire series, which is really saying something.

Please complete your sentence. Also this is part and parcel of any series becoming mainstream. Casuals "fans" being retards is nothing new, don't shit up actual discussion about a source work by bringing up what some random faggots are doing on youtube or reddit or whatever other site that's already infamous for low quality discussion. If anons cared then they would be discussing Ace Combat on those platforms.

Our fanbase has always been one (of many, of course) defined by arrested development.
It's never been a remarkable one.
The sole thing it could lord over others (I only see it here because I don't go anywhere else) with the least amount of shame was and still is "normies can't into the expert controls!". Wow!
YouTube comments about Ace Combat before 7 were always been characterized by inane stuff like "am i the Only one who thinks it'd be really Epic imagine if Mobious [sic] 1 and Razgriz Squadron teamed Up in the next Ace Combat" and "this is the greatest song of any video game ever" and "____ has the most well-written story of any video game. Anyone else agree?".
Don't worry dude - this more recent stuff you're worried about won't lower the room temperature average IQ.

I get where you're coming from in the fear of what this franchise might turn into,
and the fear that comes from the knowledge that we can't really do anything about it.

I will say the one truly cancer thing (which I've seen infect most fandoms) is people becoming 'fans' but not really fans. IE they go on to spout memes and stuff about but have never actually played the game; it doesn't matter if they say something obviously wrong and you can prove otherwise in 2 seconds they just brush it off and shit up the whole fandom.

DMC theoretically would be inoculated against normies because it's brutally hard for someone who hasn't played such a character action game like that before, so you have to really commit to become a fan. That doesn't stop Max0r's underage legion from shitting it up with unfunny memes.

>Boy, these clouds somehow look worse than they did in the PS2 games
If you mean low res, yes it was a rendering trick for performance. All the particles in the game, which mostly means the clouds and missile trails, are rendered at half (maybe less?) resolution. I'm honestly not sure that's even fixable without some really heinous reverse engineering type shit because that's going to be very low level rendering code.
Resolution aside, the clouds and particles in AC6 are gorgeous and while AC7/8's clouds are much better, no Ace Combat since has ever matched 6's missile smoke trails and the scale of its battles.

If its a special unlock it doesn't matter the Falken didn't even exist in 95 as it was built from data gathered from Morgan. The X-02 would be it exist on paper and prototypes but not in the form you get to use in 95

The hack helped fix the ground issue with Xenia. The game is still kinda stuttery, but that's just my hardware, it's all playable now.
The new High G maneuver is a game-changer. 180 turns are now so much easier, it's a great feature. And the visuals are much better, but that's a given.
But man, did we really need another story about an evil Russia expy attacking some country? We have, what, three of those now? Four? I'm pretty sure half of Strangereal is just Soviets, with the other half being some nondescript white people that exist to get pummeled by them when it's time to make another game. And I wish at least one Ace Combat game featured a cool, charismatic main villain. So far, the only one we got was Pixy.

Playing 6 with the latest Xenia version, apart from having to enable the ground texture fix it's working fine. I'm getting missile trails and everything, and cutscenes are watchable audio wise.

But I have to ask, did someone threaten PA with something if they didn't include 'dance with the angels' in every cutscene at least once? I should replay it and count them lmao.

Finished AC6.
Overall, I'd say it's a typical early seventh-gen title. This game tries to wow you in every way. The visuals are stunning - everything now has a new dimension to it, clouds are big and voluminous, contrails litter the sky, enemies explode into bright fireworks, and some of the maps are legitimately beautiful. The gameplay has been improved, too - High G maneuvers are amazing (and I really hope they'll stay for the rest of the series), plane controls are smoother than ever, their physics feel more realistic, guns don't feel as useless as they used to. The story is also on a new level - more cutscenes than ever, more characters. The scale of battles is amazing - tons of enemies, huge maps, multiple objectives, being able to land on the map for refueling instead of flying off to the side somewhere - all of that is really cool.
However, it all comes at a cost - this game has no fucking content. Only 15 missions, really? I get that some of them are bigger than usual, but still, that's less than Air Combat. Also, only 15 planes? That's also less than fucking Air Combat. The campaign is linear, no forks at all. Compare that to, you guessed it, Air Combat. Even that game had branching paths, and so did every game that followed it. And with Zero and X, it felt like they were expanding this system more and more, only to ditch it now.
Also, the story is just not very good. The "main heroine" sounds like she's being played by one of the HR ladies - absolutely zero emotion in her dialogue, which becomes grating fast. The war itself starts from nowhere and goes nowhere, it's the most thematically barren conflict since, yes, Air Combat.
This is rather typical of the games from that era specifically. Next-gen tech wowed everyone more than ever, so everyone started chasing visuals while abandoning content, because having both was not an option yet, the tools weren't there. But at least in this case, they also polished the gameplay.
Overall, pretty gud.

Now you understand why we say the cut scene story is bad while the in game story is just fine.
The game is short due to them making both Zero and 6 at the same time. Along with 6 being the first game they made in HD something had to give and it was game length.
>>
Speaking of AC6, I really wish they brought back the [SHOOT] mechanic for better missile tracking. As well as the targeting pip from ACZ. I wonder why they decide to abandon such obviously good past mechanics.

Yeah, the in-game stuff was good. Big props to whoever played Ghost Eye, that dude poured his heart and soul into the role. His screaming and shouting in mission 11 was the best piece of acting this series has seen so far.
Also, I think I'm not a big fan of music in these games. I still think that AC1 and AC2 had superior soundtracks, save for a few key songs in each of the subsequent games (like the flamenco music in Zero, or the final battle theme in 4). Most of it is just orchestral movie noise, it's not memorable, and this game was the worst offender so far. Nothing compares to how AC2 pumps you up for each mission with distinct tracks that aren't afraid to steal your attention.

I am kind of wondering how effective they'll actually be, given there's 3 of them. Pixy and Shamrock are an order of magnitude better than 5's wingmen, for example, but there's only one each of them. If 5's wingmen were that good, they'd play the game for you. What kind of balance is PA trying to strike in this case? I suppose it won't matter too much either way, optimal strategy is very likely to be stick them all in Prowlers/Growlers and have them be your ESM slaves.

I have this game it looks pretty you can select skins for your ship and all enemies from ever Galaga game ever made
The downside and the reason the game was bad is its built around competitive leader boards. It was a product of its time and suffered for it in the long run.

I head cannon that Ulysses was sent by the Galaxian's to try and stop the humans before they got into space.
They grew to fear the humans when the expedition they sent to Earth was defeated by an Osean pilot flying a Sopwith Camel and a Belkan flying a Fokker Dr.I
>>
>>570972004
Actually yes they do but not how your thinking. It works on put them in the right plane they get kills put them in the wrong plane they kind of goof off a lot
I put Nagase in a Russian plane she sucks can't get a single kill. I put her in a US plane she kicks ass, Grimm is happy with Mig-144 or Euro, Chopper likes US Navy birds doesn't care for Russian planes same for Snow. They all however love the Gripen. Especially its rockets they fire a lot of them.
>>
>>570963869
having a pool of wingmen to choose from, like you get to bring 2 pilots and you can choose from a roster of say 8, each with different let's say "stats" like maybe one is better at air combat, another is better at ground pounding, maybe one is more aggressive and another is less trigger happy, and maybe they could all have different personalities and radio lines and different banter with each of the other wingmen, and the more you fly with a specific wingman the more "affinity" or whatever they develop with you which improves their stats
I know it's stupid but it could be cool i think

Gonna be weird when the FCU president gives Sotoa a deal he criticized his predecessor for and is arguably even more favorable to them than the old deal was. Joking aside, Leasath and Estovakia are both arguably better off after losing since those wars both took out their respective warmongers. The Leasath people even tore Navarro limb from limb. And also disassembled a Fenrir by hand, truly the most powerful race in the strange real world. One thing I'm curious about is if we'll actually counterinvade Sotoa at some point or if we'll only be fighting on the Usean continent.

>coffin = that jet interface in 3 where it allows you insane manouverability on the jet right
It's just the idea of ditching a traditional glass canopy in favour of a fully enclosed canopy and the addition of some kind of funky control method.
Falken has it in 5, then the playable Raven in 7 is the 'manned' version with a COFFIN cockpit, then a handful of original planes in X - the Forneus, Fregata, Cariburn and Fenrir.
X also iirc introduced the idea of the XFA-27 having a proto-COFFIN that used cameras under the cockpit to allow the pilot to see underneath them.
The Falken used eye movements and voice commands as its control method, AC3's COFFIN uses brain-machine interfaces.

That's actually a good concept for a potential WW2-era Ace Combat game. Come up with a bunch of ridiculous gun weaponry like shotguns, flak cannons, unguided projectiles of all kinds, etc. Basically, turn the game into a shooter in the sky, with cool prop planes of all kinds, and a focus on precise dogfighting as opposed to timing your missiles.
And then the endgame plane is an F-86. A tad out of its time, but cool enough to ignore that.

Not true. Old school space sims lile Tie Fighter or Freespace figured out how to make fun escort missions.

I mean, you're an escort fighter, but it wouldn't be an escort mission, you'd have to fly ahead of your carrier and destroy all the enemies before the carrier gets there, fast enough to give you time to go back to your carrier and rearm before the next waves gets to the carrier
And for the solo against an entire enemy army, I don't mean more or less solo because your allies are useless, I mean literally solo, everything on the map is trying to kill just you, but you're in something like a full strength Nosferatu, with simultaneous ADMMs, EMLs, ECM pods, and UAVs.

Well, my Joint Assault journey ended on a completely bizarre note. I got to the mission where you need to fly a 747 through a canyon, and the game decided to shit itself completely. All sound disappeared, and whenever I press the fire button, the emulator crashes. Tried restarting, rebooting, playing with save files, nothing works. The game just fucking dies. In all my years of vidya, I never had any issues with PPSSPP, so I'll take it as a sign.
Honestly, this game is pretty damn crap. The story is not terrible, really, it's retarded but in a fun way. The same goes for the setpieces, like a giant flying evil fortress of death that's somehow more maneuverable than your plane, or flying a fucking 747 through a canyon. The music is kinda decent I guess, more interesting than in AC6, but AC2 tracks stick out way too much. But man, the gameplay suuuuuuucks. Half of the planes are so damn slow it feels like playing with a flying slug, and the other half are insanely jittery and spin out of control with a single nudge of the stick. You can't actually roll in this game - moving the stick instead does this weird fucking thing where your plane starts moving in a circle on the screen, which is insanely uncomfortable after 8 games of muscle memory. None of it is fun, and I'm glad to have a reason to bail early. Honestly, it's like if Hollywood made a shitty Ace Combat movie adaptation, and this was the crappy movie tie-in game on the PSP. Like that stupid Dragon Ball movie game.
Anyway, moving on to Assault Horizon. Finally, I'm on PC, my home turf.

Don’t remember well for 4 if it’s different, but in 5, the distances are in feet and IIRC your basic missiles lock on roughly around a mile (5280 ft), it might be at 5000 ft even but I think it’s a little longer than that.

hmm maybe post 5 I dunno, in 1-2-3-4 it was definitely a case of more expensive = usually better, altho for me I always value stability the most, especially since sooo many missions in the series were ground target focused so far (which I don't mind though pulling off a good bombing run is more satisfying than dogfighting even sometimes)

Having tested it myself just now, there's a ground fix hack you'll want to enable. Otherwise besides maybe some shadow issues and the lens flare off of the sun being broken, it's pretty playable. Cutscene audio and desync occurs easily due to first time loading of assets, though.
>>
>>571098814
is it any better than xenia canary tho?
>>
>>571098275
That is an easy fix you can only use VTOL for landing or free flight.
>>
>>571099263
if your already coding vtol flight mechanics, why would you limit it to the landings/takeoffs or free flight
>>
>>571100083
maybe you can make it so that VTOL will slowly stall your aircraft and you can't accelerate in that mode? if the main question is to prevent exploitation of VTOL flight to keep ground attack mission from getting too easy
>>
>>571100083
You stop to shoot at ground targets
>missile missile missile
You can't evade or get enough speed to avoid and get hit
>missile missile missile
Your damage is now 70% or shot down
You don't go VTOL IRL outside of landing or takeing off or to fly alongside a WWI bomber. It really has no use in this game unless you include special "turret" shooting sections just like AH had
The only reason to have it would be goof off in free mode to check out stuff and a different way to land and take off.
>>
>>571098275
They could just make the Harrier playable and not bother with the VTOL, exactly like they did in Infinity and AH. It’s not like they use VTOL for anything but takeoff and landing in real life anyway. Never made any sense to me why they won’t include it, I love the Harrier.

>You stop to shoot at ground targets
