I think I understand why some people misinterpret Chiaki’s words or see them as empty. When you’re constantly told you aren’t good enough or don’t do enough, feeling validated feels wrong. That’s why “just be confident” is extremely flawed advice for some people who identify with someone like Hajime or put himself in his shoes. Having said that, I think it would be better to focus on who is actually saying this to you. Chiaki starts out as an AI with no agency of her own, with a purpose that defines her entire existence, just as talent defines the lives of the rest of the cast and it's Hajime's biggest obsession. It is only through her interactions with the group that she gradually begins to grow closer to the others and feel more human, more real. It is through her sacrifice and her plea to be remembered that we can say with certainty that she grew to become something more than her function dictated and became her own being.The tragedy and beauty of Chiaki’s journey lie in the fact that she finds her identity not through talent, but through a choice. When an ordinary person tells Hajime (or someone like him) to ‘have confidence’, they do so on the premise of inherent worth. It sounds like: ‘You already have worth; you just need to discover it.’ To someone without talent, that comes across as psychological manipulation. But when Chiaki says it, what she is saying is: ‘I was programmed to be a tool. My worth was assigned to me even before I existed. The only way I came to be ‘real’ was by rejecting what I had been created for and choosing what I loved. She was an AI designed to... preserve herself? For some reason? In a simulation without violence in mind?We don't really see what Chiaki grows out of and changes from. She starts as nice and weird and ends as nice and weird. You can't really tell any real noticable change from Chiaki in 2-1/2-2/2-3 to Chiaki in 2-4/2-5. If Chiaki was asocial and standoffish you could see something change in her eventual sacrifice, but as a character... I have no reason to believe she wouldn't do that, It's not an evolution in her character; she doesn't face self-esteem issues or insecurity about being an AI, and then becomes something more. If it does exist, it's so subtle I don't remember. It's an evolution in what she's able to do... for some reason... and it's contrived. "I could break the laws of my reality so you can too, Hajimeme!"In that way, it still rings hollow to me.
