I'm a bit ashamed to admit it, but I struggle with fully dialogue based VNs. What are the best games with some “hands on” gameplay in between the talking?This is going to sound bad coming from someone who's been gaming for over two decades and prides himself on at least *trying* everything, but I have a really hard time staying locked in with VNs that are just text from beginning to end. And it bugs me because I know the genre has some of the best stories in gaming. I've heard a lot about SteinsGate, Clannad and Umineko, enough to know I’m missing out on great stories that I would otherwise dive headfirst in if they weren’t all text. But every time I try something that's purely reading with the occasional dialogue choice, my brain starts drifting around the 2-3 hour mark no matter how good the writing is. It's probably my ADD but I can’t help it.I think what it comes down to is that I need something to *do* between the story segments or blending naturally with the story itself. Some kind of active mechanic that breaks up the reading and gives my hands something to engage with, even if it's relatively simple. The closest I've come to properly enjoying VN-style storytelling was Persona 4 Golden, and that worked because the dungeon crawling and social sim management kept pulling me back between the dialogue heavy sections. Same thing with the Ace Attorney games, the investigation and courtroom segments gave me enough interactivity that I never felt like I was just passively consuming.
