You'll always know when a flamer is approaching, so when you hear one coming, you and/or your teammates should spread out a bit, so one of you can get a good firing angle on them without getting caught in there flames. Same with Poxbursters/Suicide Bombers. If you here one coming, you should immediately separate, so if it has to hit someone, only one person is caught in the blast. Also, since you didn't know about Toughness, did you play the "optional" Advanced Training, that the game prompts you with when you finish the tutorial.

Bad aim will make it hard to snipe specials, but it's far more important to just not eat shit, which isn't something the controller would impede, I'd think. Maybe you won't be able to play Vet well, but melee should be fine.
