Look at Ruan Jia's saber vs takeuchi saber. Looks totally different right? Because the design had to be reworked to fit into that guy's semi realistic art style. If you can't draw it in a way that looks good, then that is most definitely a skill issue that you will only be able to overcome with more fundies or more refs. If the only thing that an artist is capable of doing is exactly replicating something that already exists, then why would you even hire an artist and not a photocopier? When a client comes to you with a design you have to do but the way the other artist outputted it looked like total shit because 99% of the artists around have a skill level lower than you (which is the whole reason why they want to commission you in the first place) are you going to say, no I can't draw this design because it looks like total shit? That's not a fucking excuse. People can draw the same design and it will look totally different. Not being able to rework the design in a way that looks good = skill issues.
