played darkstalkers for the first time recently and while vasv has a lot of weird high difficulty tech it's not hard to see how you could make a high-mobility game with shorter combos accessible after playing that so y did they make strive more like some weird street fighter with an airdash

When I was new I found the in-game notation (the quarter and half circles etc superimposed on the D-pad) to be really helpful in understanding what was meant and the general structure of inputs (compared to other games I'd seen in the past like MK or SF with long series of directions and button combinations that felt tedious / intimidating to be told to memorize).
