I think I figured it out. Sans and Papyrus are from Undertale's world, and helped their other brother Gaster with his lab work. Sans spent enough time inside the Deltarune simulation watching over things that he got attached to the people and situations there, and is depressed he can't go back in because the simulator gets completely trashed during Deltarune's ending. This is the broken machine in his basement. It is what shattered Gaster across time and space which happens at the end of Deltarune, and only he would have known how to fix it.

To me having fun Dark World adventures is generally more important anyway. It seems like a longer and more polished version of Chapter 3 in most aspects. I'm not sure if we needed that story twice, but it was fun either way. The sidescrolling platformer was definitely a better gameplay feature than either Zelda or the climbing. One aspect I think was better polished in actual Ch 3 was the main boss though, Tenna felt way more like a classic Toby character with a cheery facade and a struggle on the inside. Flowery is too much of a straightforward anti-villain (that feels weird to say) who doesn't really have any flaws.
