My personal theory is that Kris and Catti's demon summoning ritual succeeded, and that instead of a demon, Kris actually created a dark fountain, which Dess got lost in and Asgore saw and became obsessed with. Alternatively, the ritual happened after the disappearance, and was intended to bring Dess back. However it failed, and instead raised the roaring knight.
