Then Greenwood decided hot ebony Elves needed to be playable so he invented Elistrae and then Drizzt happened and the Drow actually being this monstrous, incredibly dangerous threat was just lost entirely and they became just another variant of Elf with no real teeth whatsoever, ultimately only existing as an outlet for "I'm a misunderstood social outcast good guy" players, and waifu bait for the rest who wanted a cute ebony elf girl to fuck. An absolute waste of a really fun idea for a deadly, sentient, adversarial species.
