The Great Race of Yith originally used their abilities as a species to escape a planatary cataclysm by traveling to Earth’s past into the bodies of whatever their current form is (which ironically is NATIVE to earth, so the slug-tentacle-claw-things aren’t aliens). They encountered there a species of floating, inter-dimensional bonfire lovecraftian abominations that exist both in and out of reality and are incredibly dangerous and destructive. The Yithians managed to seal them away, but eventually the seal broke and the Yithians were destroyed. However, they still survived because they used their abilities to this time swap their minds with a race in Earth’s future, described as giant beetles, far enough to where the Polyps will all be dead. It’s not known if either of their hosts were sentient or just animals though.
What was really funny/scary was that some of these races in lovecraft are just quote, unquote aliens so if you were to show them something like the existence of cuthulu or deep sea people, they would be just as freaked out as you are
