Considering the introduction in chapter 1 is called the Goner Maker, it's likely that Kris was intended to be swapped out with a Goner that we inhabit, before Kris somehow interferes - perhaps their interest in the occult with Catti is related to this? Regardless, the fact that Castle Town is named after the Vessel's creator would support this.
