Atrocities and horrors are directly mentioned unlike the games, but they're not focused upon. What the material does is force you to look at the more screwed up aspects of the games by stripping away the chuuni filter that would normally hide it, portrays the characters in a sympathetic/vulnerable light, and act as a tonal contrast to the game. It's hard to hate the bad guys as much when the dramas portray them as lost kids.
