It seems the stardate number counts down rather than up. That's our time limit. Unless I misunderstood, the only thing that costs stardate time is warping between quadrants at the galaxy map level, not moving around within one (between sectors) or any other actions

It turns out there's no way to cancel any part of a warp instruction once it's been entered and now we only have 3 stardates left after spending 8 stardates attempting to fly 8 quadrants and we didn't even go anywhere because there was a star in the way in the starting quadrant

The "X alien warships in Y stardates" numbers change every time you reset the game. I've seen as low as 10 aliens and as high as around 55. The difference between the number of aliens and stardate limit seems to vary between 0 and 7, so I guess reroll until you get a 7 difference for an easier game
