>Are mystery dungeon games allowed in this thread?
Generally yes, most mystery dungeon games(Shiren the Wanderer, Pokemon Mystery Dungeon, Etrian Mystery Dungeon, etc.) can be considered roguelikes
>Is Elin/Elona allowed?
Yes, they are roguelikes. Please do post your Little Sister farms.
>Is Dwarf Fortress allowed?
If it's adventure mode, yes. But adventure mode is boring. /tg/ has a general for fortress mode playthroughs, but you can share here too!

It's more a matter of principle, adhering to which would prevent very likely long term disaster of tons of random people spamming tons of contributions of dubious quality with the actual players and real programmers playtesting the buggy mess. You can't reduce this to the scope of a single [shitty] contribution to make it sound ridiculous, because this "no AI policy" isn't about that scale, but the scale of the project itself.
Allowing AI means that any tard can appear out of nowhere at any time and force the community to waste their real life human time testing and reviewing something said tard just copypasted from some chatbot... times infinity and for as long as the project exists. Not only that, but said community would also have to walk on eggshells and write polite paragraphs on why that contribution is too low quality to be accepted, because if they just start wordlessly banning people or limit the contributions to a select few, "people" will start talking shit about how the project is run by [people you don't like], driving both contributors and players away.

It's like allowing porn on a 3d (as in 3d computer graphics, not real life media) content board: it WILL get flooded with horrifying DAZ fetish porn and you can't really formulate a "community rule" to prevent that from happening because you can't quantify depravity or quality. All you can realistically do is ban nsfw entirely from such a place.

I always found it strange that "slippery slope" is treated as some ridiculous fallacy that instantly invalidates one's argument. It's a very real thing that happens with such things, and denying it just because nobody can guarantee the future isn't grounds for dismissing an educated guess on what's actually likely to happen. "You give them an inch..." isn't a common saying for no reason.

Moonring is a nigger game because it's a tedious puzzle RPG masquerading as a roguelike.
Sure the combat and traveling between towns has some randomness to it but it's closer to random encounters. The game is entirely about figuring out the esoteric spoiler puzzles and the weird conversation system and trading different gods and standing on different tiles in different phases of the moon and solving riddles and mazes and god it's so tedious and obscure, only the mentally deranged could put this much effort into a game this obscure and tedious
(It was too hard and confusing for me ever since I got brain damage all I can really do is play splatlikes like DCSS)

RW2 is probably easier to start playing as a beginner and it's "finished", but I think RW3 is the better designed game in the long run. The only problem with RW3 is that the crafting menu requires a lot of faffing about if you don't have the whole thing memorized.
>>
>>572758403

>>572844078
RW1 is still fun especially if you're not already spoiled by the QoL features added in later games. It's more about rationing mana potions, which is an interesting challenge in its own way. I wish they would have gone back in that direction in RW3, honestly. RW2's free refresh system didn't gel with the mana potions, and then they got rid of the mana potions in RW3 instead of getting rid of the free refresh. It's always two steps forward, two steps back with this dev.

I wouldn't even do that. LLMs are trained first and foremost to maximize "engagement," the holy grail of the tech bros which basically means "get the customer addicted so he buys a subscription." Checking that the answers it gives are correct is an afterthought. Instead it's built to confidently give you an answer and keep the conversation going, even if it has to hallucinate a fake (but plausible-sounding!) answer, fooling you into thinking it helped.

I'd rather have to come up with my own answers than try to parse truth from falsehood from a machine that's been taught to fool me with pretend-answers.

Is there some way to remove teleglow, in DDA? I was raiding one of those labs with the red carpet hallways and you know how they have science-ID-locked loot room variants spread around, containing bionics, mutagen and stuff? One of the types is a room with a random artifact behind shutters, and a variant of that type is a tear in reality in place of the artifact. Since the tear has nether monsters camping around it, the room is usually a mess full of debris on the floor from all the destruction, but I was passing by one using "V" to look for ethanol and noticed that there's actually an artifact behind the tear in reality. The same lab had another room like it, and it also had an artifact, of the same type with the same number of uses. Turns out it's not a random artifact, it has an effect that closes tears in reality, but the catch is that it gives you teleglow.

Having a way to reliably close tears would be quite good, but I don't know how to deal with teleglow. I guess you could just park some kinda bike nearby and get ready to leg it immediately after use to dodge the hounds, but I'm not sure if even that would be reliable.

Also I found another neat thing, you can bring inactive prototype cyborgs (in item form) to Rubik and if you have enough store credit you can have him either remove all their bionics and give you a random one, just remove all their bad shit, or sell them into robot slavery for +200$ store credit. The first two are actually bugged in the sense that they spawn as followers, but if you talk to them they just have a "first meeting" dialogue with no way to get to their follower dialogue, and the only way you can fix it is by "e"->trading them a two way radio, moving away where you can't see them, dismissing them over the radio, then coming back and re-recruiting them. Sucks that the only way you can deactivate prototype cyborgs now is with scrambler grenades. Dazzle rifle/random EMP effect doesn't work anymore.

its the lack of, and implementing a gender tag to every item. adding a fleshlight is also adding a "bug" that would get endless complaints, "my female aint no futa, why do r fleshlight work?". which unironically, is actually some work. youd need to make sure adding this to every single item doesnt break something somewhere, make sure and test that you cant use them on the inappropriate gender npc, or add a response for attempting to use it on the wrong gendered npc. its more work then its really worth because at the end of the day youll add what...2 items? a fleshlight and an onahole, which is just really fleshlight, but japan?

if you really want a chance of convincing anyone this is worth it, id argue for the addition of some traits.
>crippling homophobia/homosexuality
moral loss, stat loss for
-seeing opposite/same gender killed
-wearing opposite/same gender clothing
-seeing flags/apparel/items pertaining positive/negative portrayals of same/opposite gender (lgbt flags, buttplugs)
>cripplingly...crossdress...ing
-just locks you out of wearing your starting sexs clothing
>sex addict
-morale loss if you go without playboys, erotica literature, sleeping without a body pillow, using above said sex toys
these above traits would actually present a challenge and isnt particularly offensive to each group, as long as the trait is only negative and not positive. the keyword here being CRIPPLING. choosing these traits are not implying they are good/bad things to be, but implying that you have them to such intense level its actively detrimental.

realistically, youll just be told to roleplay it yourself if you care so much, it wont be worth the endless discussion that will come with implementing this, no matter how "nicely" you do it. and just occurred to me youd need to add a boatload of junk items since suddenly youll need female and male shoes, socks, pants, shirts, female/male glasses, female/male gloves. no ones gonna bother.

redpill me on prone, besides using it in water because apparently you need to micromanage telling your retarded character to actually swim properly what are it's uses?

also does crouching ACTUALLY improve ranged accuracy or is that a meme?
>>
>>573060031
i never use it for that, i use it purely for line of sight stuff in dense city. times to use it
>climbing a ladder to a roof
lets you get the sight range bonus for your map, without exposing yourself to every zed for a mile
>opening doors in houses
prone before doing so, if the room has open windows, you can crawl to them and shut the blinds. useful for going from a kitchen/living room to a bedroom. how many times have you opened a mystery door and gone "oh, im spotted. thanks open window"
>cars
crouch in a car and zeds cant see you. not as useful anymore because running/moving vehicles attract zeds, but you used to be able to just peak, see where you wanted to go, and slide down in the seat and cruise that gap. still, you can hide behind a car with crouch
kitchen counters, boxes, couches. all line of sight blocks. machine gun turret at military bases? crouch behind a couch, and push the couch to them. cardboard box works better, but it just gives you more options.
also they probably fixed it, but apparently bandits could virtually never hit you when you were prone, like it dropped their accuracy by 95% or something dumb. annnnd i think explosive fragmentation damage is much less likely to tag you if prone, so i guess if you reallllly fuck up and drop a nade a few squares away and cant run, might as well try.

>You light the fuse on the stick of dynamite!

>>
>>573060031
I'm pretty sure prone reduces recoil from firing guns, at least I know it allows you to use the bipod mod which drastically reduces recoil. The other big one is explosives, you can get comically close to grenade detonations just by going prone. I think I tested it once and found you were still very safe as close as 4 tiles away from a grenade going off.

This apparently was such an annoyance to the TLG dev that they completely changed how explosive fragmentation works so you can't do that anymore. I didn't know about the swimming thing myself, that's pretty hilarious.
>>
despite having 800 gorillion hours in it I still don't know how cover and block works with terrain

does it only apply if I'm physically ON the tile? Or between the shooter and the cover object? Does it still work if you are standing? Does, for example, 35% Block mean that when I'm on that tile there is a 35% chance the enemy smacks the object instead of me?

huh, Haste in Magiclysm has a fun way of balancing itself - it makes you 2.5x faster for 17 minutes so you can fight pretty much anything easily and outrun anything, but since your stamina regen is time based, you end up completely gassed super fast if you run around murderizing everything in sight

you can toss it over a fence, or onto a roof to reduce/stop fragments entirely.

The clever work around here is to use the already existing label mechanic to create custom items on the fly
>get a pen

What's wrong with DDA? I'm playing it right now after bouncing off multiple times, raided a lab, kitted out and doing quests for NPCs, I'm having fun.
>>
>>573167285
It's still pretty good, but there's been a long-running anti-fun thread to its development for years. Obnoxious changes, inexplicable nerfs, tedium and grind. A lot of people play Bright Nights instead of Dark Days since the BN devs place game balance ahead of "realism*" and actively try to avoid adding grindy shit.

* DDA's notion of realism is very strange, and almost always bends in a direction that hurts the player, realism that helps the player doesn't exist
>>
>>573167285
BN is the "they changed it now it sucks" crowd, so if you havent played old dda, you can pretty much ignore BN until youve played regular DDA enough to know what you would want changed or not. problem is, BN is updated at a much slower rate so its mostly outdated, but retains the style the "it changed so it sucks now" crowd wants.
>>
>>573168552
The one thing I remember was the removal of killer drive / psychopath perks, because they were 'edgy'. It's lame because now I can't roleplay as a death row convict escaping from prison.
On a side note, the game becomes easy past melee 3 with a fire axe / riot gear. I've cleared two cities and looted a lab. By the time zombie evolution kicks in I'll probably be unkillable.

if youve set up your danger zones correctly, going home, almost any distance, should be just 3-4 button presses. anyways, every solar panel you find on a roof disassembles into 4 vehicle solar panels, so even evac shelters give you 4 freebies.
this is what houses have on them, this is 36 vehicle solar panels. you need 2 elec/2 fab to install it, and 1 prying/1 screw to remove it from the roof, and your gonna have 3 months to do this.

I get wheels are terrible for off roading, but they aren't fucking ballons ready to pop. DDA devs are just plain up retarded, none of this is even makes sense from either a realistic or gameplay stance. There wouldn't have so much issue with it if it wasn't so frequent and they actually implemented mechanized to properly offroad with the update they introduced this shit. But like everything else, they implement a shit change hoping someone else more competent will fix it in frustration.
Mi-Go scouts are an example of this btw, they use the monster ability system to fire a gun. Which means they instafire when you enter their range, can keep shooting while chasing or attacking since they don't need to aim, will always hit the torso, have perfect accuracy and since they don't need to aim they don't get interrupted. No doubt they intended for someone to "fix" it and give monsters the ability to properly aim and this shit change is how they are going about it. They did this with locks, riot damage, space cramping, dust, amalgamation spawning, passive crafting and many more.

>>573177107
It doesn't really make sense for diesel, gasoline goes bad mostly because of the added ethanol that almost all pump gas has. Ethanol free gasoline can sit on the shelf for a very long time. Diesel never had ethanol to begin with, I have heard stories of people taking diesel from literally decades old forgotten tanks and still working.

Fuel spoiling at all is retarded because of the time scale of the game. Very few players go beyond a single in game year, a 3+ year long game is borderline unheard of. Even pump gas with added ethanol will last a year.

>>573179849
the time frame is what makes it fine to me. if you REALLY get far enough for it to expire, youve already passed many, MANY chances to prepare for it. and diesel does go bad, just way slower. makes those vehicles have a point to existing, because literally who ever chose a diesel vehicle before hand unless it was their only option?

its a challenge for the .001% people who get to a year and do some autistic shit like, farming. cool.
>>
>>573180258
There's not much reason to NOT use a diesel over a gasoline car in the game because diesel engines are more fuel efficient. Plus you can find gigantic loot drops of JP8 at military locations.

the V12 diesel engine is the most powerful engine you can find that isn't some hyper-rare meme item like an osprey turboshaft or w/e. Never mind the fact that a V12 diesel engines basically don't exist in road vehicles IRL.

>>
>>573180719
All of the liquid fuels are nowhere near as broken as electric motors. That's another thing that makes this fuel spoiling nerf stupid. I only use combustion engines in the early game before I find a large/enhanced electric motor and decent amount of solar panels. Once you have those, the only thing gas and diesel are good for is as emergency backup generators if you accidentally drain your car of battery power away from your solar panels, but even that I have never had to actually use in a game.
>>
>>573180537
so gasoline expiring is a pain in the ass because no one uses gasoline engines because diesel engines are better in every way? this commit impacts nobody?

whats...whats the problem again?
>>
>>573181118
That's it's a stupid waste of time, like so many additions to the game. My biggest concern would be the game running even worse than it already does because of some kind of constant calculation on the spoilage state of every drop of fuel within the reality bubble, as was the case with food which took them forever to not even fix but make more bearable. It serves zero fucking gameplay purpose, so literally why bother? It's even more laughable when you consider that this fuel spoilage will only work in the reality bubble so it will only further reinforce in incongruity of finding new towns beyond your bubble that are seemingly still on day 1 of the cataclysm.
>>
>>573181118
It's a change that impacts practically no one besides making one of the weaker parts of the "meta" even weaker for the sake of half-assed realism

This is especially insulting because there are zombies everywhere. It's a zombie game. You have to kill zombies to progress and get stronger. Early game characters are already very weak and are played differently enough. It's also a game where magic blob makes you regenerate all limbs to full health in the span of a single night's sleep because you applied the bandage in a correct way.
But players killing too many zombies is where the line is drawn.

Not even close to my point and you know it. It's a waste of time because it will never even come up in normal gameplay for 99.9% of players if the timescales are true to real life.

It wasn't merged yet but it wasn't closed either, so they're considering it. Probably not in the extreme the dev suggested, I mean I agree you don't want to be killing hundreds of zombies day one, but that's already... happening in the game. New characters are weak and they must avoid zombies to survive, until the train up and find proper gear. It took my character a week to properly gear up and tackle on his first (small) zombie city, and only because I got lucky with an axe drop.
>>573183681
See you tommorow anon.

So the conversation is still going on, but that guy doesn't want anyone to talk about it here because it could hurt his fee-fees. Even better!
>>
>>573184862
I don't think they'll merge this as-is because it would flip the game balance upside down. How else are you supposed to get into cities? Parkour runner style, jumping across rooftops? Would be cool but the game isn't built on that. All my characters clear cities street by street, I recently got good enough to graduate from tedious kiting with a spear and I sure as hell don't feel like returning there when I start playing experimental again.
>>
Since all the Cataclysm people are here right now is there an easy way to modify cars just for the sake of testing? I dug around the debug menus but found nothing for modifying them, just spawning. I could start a new character and spawn in all parts needed to modify, but that's gonna take ages. I was hoping there was a simple way to go "remove this, install this part here".

>The output of a car per minute is still the output of a car per minute, and solidly above even the theoretical potential of human activity regardless of whether you can keep it up for a whole day.

>It's also the work of a car per minute, which means the generated heat of a car per minute. If your hypothetical fresh-out-of-the office-building survivor (assuming 100kg weight, because they're unfit) burned 1,200 calories in a minute they would die of heatstroke well before the minute was up.

>We can very easily see that the number one cause of historical battle death was dysentery, not poking your enemy for thirty seconds and then having your brain melt down. >Do the refutations and complaints that zombies are slow and clumsy and unintelligent attackers not find ANY purchase in your mind, anon?
I was just about to mention that myself. Comparing killing shambling zombies to medieval armored combat is asinine. Even in the game you kill a zombie in 1-2 whacks with an axe or a handful of stabs with a kitchen knife.
>>573187614
>retarded safety suit bubble layering system where the survivor takes zero damage
I don't see what's retarded about it, at least with respect to zombies. It would be pretty difficult to bite or meaningfully punch through a heavy leather jacket with underlying padding. The armor system starts to break down logically with much more threatening things like guns. Realistically the only thing capable of stopping rifle bullets are armor plates specifically made for stopping rifle bullets. Every other piece of armor in the game rifle rounds would go straight through without struggling.
>>
>>573187469
Why do you think it's Renech? I doubt CDDA devs are poking their heads into here of all places.

>The real reason you can fight 100 zombies in a day is because of the retarded safety suit bubble layering system where the survivor takes zero damage just because he's funneled into a good choke and is wearing four pairs of jeans
not even the best strat for beating groups of zombies in melee.
low encumbrance dodge + terrain is many times better, don't even need a chokepoint just kiting zombies over a car or pool of water is enough. Can kill zombies before they even attack due to 400 movement terrain, and even if they do attack they will often miss due to high dodge.
>>
>>573188348
He literally referred to the DDA dev team as "we"
>>
>>573188823
that's the best method in terms of game mechanics but it takes a lot longer in real time. Micromanaging every fight by kiting them onto slow terrain takes forever IRL compared to throwing on armor, standing in a chokepoint and holding down tab.
>>
>>573177670
90% of my deaths are in realm 4/5 not sure how this helps
>>
>>573188823
Attacks done from movement cost tile inherit the tile's cost when calculating the attack speed, so you can get even more hits in. Sadly grabs are instant from what I've heard and only a dodge will save you from that. On the other hand, I don't find kiting an entire city's worth of zombies to be worthwhile, it's tedious, repetitive and once you get a decent armor and a weapon, often unnecessary, since most hits that aren't dodged fail to penetrate armor, or deal much less damage.

>>
>>573203728
They end up having to couch all of their proposals in terms of realism because otherwise the argument is reduced to simply what one guy prefers over another. It's the result of having no central authority dictating the direction and vision of the game. It's bizarre, the fixation on realism is essentially an emergent property of the decentralized open source development. And it causes these absurd and absurdly long winded arguments citing obscure history and technical data that they don't even understand.
>>
>>573204059
You can have realism without compromising on fun factor. Anyone sperging this much about calories consumes during fighting or how many zombies it is realistic to kill in a day should be ignored.

>>
>>573204374
Oh course you can, but my point is that they are effectively incentivized to constantly up the ante on adherence to realism because it gives their argument more perceived legitimacy. You can see it in that discussion in the link, ultimately the heart of the argument is that one guy wants combat to be more punishing and the other guy doesn't but neither one of them have the authority to force the issue in either direction. So instead they both turn the autism beams on full power and blast each other with hastily googled historical accounts and technical data that neither one of them can actually interpret usefully.

I do think there should be more impact to your mobility/stamina and maybe that you should take chip blunt damage- You can disperse the impact all you like, but getting wailed on is going to take its toll, even through two leather jackets- Something like armor hardness could exist to let you stop that from coming through when you DO have something like plate armor.

But of course, crowd crush and all that shit is pretty well disliked and nerfed, so I don't think "taking twenty blows to the stomach will let through some damage to your torso through armor based on hardness" will go over well.

>>573188823
I respect this more than Day 1 invulnerability tabbers desu, it's based and tacticpilled. If you could autokite though, would I still think it was gay? Big questions. >adding an option
Game dev anon here, that's the worst choice. A few options here and there are fine, but if your game turns into Options: The Optioning, you're gonna have a bad time as a developer. It's hard to debug, it's hard to write issue reports, it's hard to parse issue reports, you have to test any new code path with every possible combination, which either slows you down or encourages people to post untested stuff or to say "if it crashed, stop using options". It's awful.
>>
>>573177670
The void spawns are still on my "avoid realm" list
>>
>>573209228
It's also bad on the player end, because it's basically asking the player to balance the game themselves. Which in most cases leads to option paralysis and using the default settings anyway. And any complaints about gameplay being dismissed with an instruction to lower whatever particular setting is related to the complaint.
>>
>>573209780
Yeah. I wanna stress that I am in no way in favor of them removing all the world options, but rather I'm against adding even more fiddly game balance knobs. Tuning the world is a-ok in my opinion, one of the game's strengths is the ability to set it to your favorite apocalypse.

Tuning the player's internals, though, feels like going too far, because now I've got options that affect the balance changes from the other options and I'm playing etch-a-sketch with player and world knobs.

The issue with humans is that we are evolved to specialize into niches. Once we've found our hole, we can't escape from it, and that's where the misery happens.
The game isn't fun anymore because we're past the honeymoon period where it feels like a brand new world where we can just fool around and learn about new things. Past the minmaxing point most choices feel meaningless.
And the worst part is because our minds are so tuned to the way of thinking in one game, picking up the next one becomes harder.
This is also why some competitive online games lean more onto the "fuck balance, just force a new meta" because a more balanced game is a microscopically less boring game, while a new meta might force people outside of their comfort zone.

I don't like scumming games but I've splatted enough runs now where I'd like to do a bit better since it's not even clear to me how to get consistently good runs. Speccing into damage seems almost doomed to fail since enemies feel like they will always outscale you and anything else is just rng dependent on drops.
>>
>>573255623
My best advice for getting far is to play rogue and try your best to not even bother attacking anything, spec into stealth and hit the bricks with most encounters
You level up plenty just discovering shit and killing wastes resources, you'll need a boatload of dynamite and bullets and so on for the boss levels

imo reloading ammo should not be in the game. the biggest reason being like you said it's much easier to simply find ammo. it's very annoying to have thousands of crafting recipes for reloading 8 different flavors of round for each caliber when every one of them is inferior to the factory ammo you find everywhere. It makes very little sense logically as a survival mechanic as well, if you lower the spawn rate of ammo presumably you would also find less gunpowder and primers which are even less common than the ammo both in game and IRL.

>>
>>573296056
I think a good potential compromise would be allowing you to trade in spent shell casings to the gunsmith ammo dealer guy for some amount of finished ammo. Maybe 2-3 empty shells in exchange for 1 round, gives you a reason to retain and collect casings without having to include a billion redundant crafting recipes and components.
>>
>>573290738
>>573296056
dda will never agree to it because it's too videogamey but you should be able to craft custom ammo that's situationally better than commercial specs.
also crafting menu should add filters and blacklists for tools and components so you could just hide everything involving ammo press for example.

Yes, that's what the synaptic stimulator does.
It lowers the rate at which you accumulate "sleep debt" (and the associated debuffs thereof)

So if you weren't a pussy you could stay up much longer before reaching the point of being physically incapable AND you would recover from that much faster (normally you'll have extra long sleeping periods/become tired faster to "pay back" the sleep deprivation tax)

You could be awake more hours in the day.

It's more a burglar thing, but yeah, it's pretty cool. I think maybe there's too many classes, but each one has their own particular thing, so I guess that's fine.
Level layout can be brutal sometimes, like I mentioned, but most of the time there are ways to get past things safely. Dancing past lasers or pushing furniture in front of them, uploading a virus to a terminal to shut off alarms or cameras, wearing a disguise or hiding in/under furniture to slip past guards, etc.
Pretty cool, but I discovered my crash problem isn't random, it happens every time I look at some weird thing, so I try not to use X anymore. Wish it was proper libre software, I'd help the guy fix his shit.

Reminds me of stepping downstairs in Qud and getting lasered by a legendary pack.
There's literally no counterplay to being instantly cooked alive because the game stacked 15 Dawnbirds in sight range of the tile and you don't even get a turn before you take 60d4+15 damage and instantly gain 6000 degrees of heat
>>
>>573321459
There were ways to get out of it. I had a couple of turns before he recognized me as an intruder, I could have thrown a smoke bomb, or hastily used a disguise, or some classes are fast or agile and might have fled. I chose to go with the taser I had picked up, tried to zap him with a 43% hit chance and was just unlucky. As a Cleaner I probably should have just rushed him and tried to clock him before he became alarmed, as the Cleaner's special ability is to knock people out by surprise.

Meta for this Flemenco seems to be to try to recognize when you're going up against something too hard and to back out. Preferably before you trip the alarms and get mobbed.

Grab enough coins and other loot from the first floor or so and you can usually make back what you spent on gear for the run, and then pick a different, less suicidal mission.

from my wip
I'm looking for some input here.
I'm wondering whether I should cast a 3 row tall shadow on the south-facing walls or a use a 2 row tall shadow.
Top left is 3-row, it looks weird when the walls stand alone. Top right is 2-row which looks a bit better.
The issue is that I'd like to put windows and other stuff on the walls and having 3 row is highly preferred.
>>
>>573345314
The usual solution for this is to use wall graphics that are larger than a standard tile and extend over the bottom of the upper tile.
>>
>>573346204
It might work for some wall stuff like a torch or a painting but the windows need to fit squarely into the lower tile
>>
>>573346327
Why would that be a problem? All you're doing is like, instead of a 64x64 tile for the walls, do a 64x72 tile, where the upper 8 pixels are the top of the wall, and overlap, covering the bottom 8 pixels of the tile above. Same exact 64x64 space for a window as now, but the top doesn't have to be truncated like that.

What's the chance to get hit in the eyes or mouth in BN?
>>
>>573305019
Yeah I tried this game and I have no earthly fucking clue how you're s'posed to do those missions where you have to not trigger alarms, there are so many situations where you just have to eat an alarm, so many up stairs that just drop you slap bang right in front of a security camera with not enough movements to get away before it goes off
Same with rooms where the objective is behind 3 enforcers, 2 security cameras and 3 shotgun turrets
>>
>>573384870
I can pull off some of the missions, there are tricks to avoid setting off various alarms. Like, laser tripwires have a stage when they go dark and you can step across them, at least for one turn, sometime two.
Surprising guards gives you a good chance to beat them down, (near 100% for Cleaners, but still solid for others) and you can lure them away by whistling where you want them to go, or better yet, flicking off a lightswitch. Leave bodies in a dark room and they'll ignore the light switch and go for the body first, which lets you casually stroll up behind them and clock them.

If you blow the alarm on the no-alarm mission, there's a secondary objective to wipe the data on a server to succeed anyway.

My problem with my latest mission was the room at the center of the top floor, where presumably my target was hiding, had no entrances whatsoever. I guess if I had the demolitions expert I could have gotten in, but damn, the mapgen could use some work.
>>
>>573386490
Oh and cameras are mostly useless in the dark, so if you can rush to a lightswitch you may escape the "camera at the top of the stairs" ploy.
Really wish you could peek up stairs, so you could go when the camera's not looking right at you.
Would also be nice if you could go back the start of the mission and, instead of aborting entirely, buy more gear. Like maybe at a 5% markup. Being able to go back and spend money on a disguise to get past cameras and stuff would be nice, and money is already the balancing factor for gear anyway.
>>
After fiddling around in debug mode for a bit in Cataclysm I've come to realise just how easy it is to make an amphibious vehicle. Simply slap on some hull pieces until it says the car floats and that's it. Really expected it to be more annoying and obtuse like everything in Cataclysm is but you don't even need a propeller for it to move.
>>
>>573393502
Hey man I've watched top gear, that shit is accurate
>>
>>573393502
Yeah, but you also need to keep in mind that the floats/sinks status also depends on the cargo load, including your and your followers' weight. It's quite possible to overload it while its afloat and lose the entire thing along with all its cargo. So one should be careful when raiding aircraft carriers and such.
>>
>>573396987
It does say how much clearance you have so hopefully it's not a problem as long as you pay attention. Though I could see it becoming a fun surprise if you try to put something super heavy like a moose corpse on it.
>>
>>573345314
I think you should try putting a dummy character sprite (and maybe any items/effect particles) in there, because I'm worried you're gonna make this look good and then realize the depth effect is all fucked up the first time a character stands 3/4ths of a tile away from a solid (but seemingly 1/4th full, or vice versa) brick wall without occluding it or anything.
>>
>>573349429
For a lot of thing it's really significant, practically eliminates recoil at all (closeby targets or refiring on the same target goes from "3 entire turns to reaim" to "half of a turn to shoot again"

Pretty worth it but as anon said you need a table, window or upturned pile of dirt for it- You absolutely CAN bust out the shovel at 50 range and then throw a noisemaker down if you want to big dick it but otherwise it'll make your shooting worse.

I think the boat stuff is super ancient and nearly untouched from all that time ago, probably because it's so rarely used that no one is interested in bothering to update it. It's almost never worth it to construct your own boat, most bodies of water are too small and also tend to have boats already available on them.

I always thought it would be cool to travel to the ocean and build a gigantic mobile boat base, but it's a huge pain in the ass to get there and at least when I did it, the game runs like total shit when you get there presumably because you have to reveal so much of the map on the ridiculously long journey.
>>
>>573414018
>presumably because you have to reveal so much of the map on the ridiculously long journey.
That can't be it, the game only loads a number of chunks of map tiles in a radius around you. That's why searching for a map tile that you know you've seen can still fail if it's far enough away, those tiles aren't even scanned.
That's over and above the reality bubble which means very few of those map tiles' contents are loaded in memory, no, I'm talking about just the overmap.
>>
>>573415212
well I don't know what it was then, because I started a new game, spawned a helicopter and traveled directly east until I hit the ocean which took forever. And when I got there the game was so choppy and laggy it was unplayable.
>>
>>573415426
Yeah I don't know either. Could be something with large map coordinates. Could maybe test it by deleting the map file and reloading the save, that'd force it to regenerate the map. Or crash, depending on whether DDA has gotten more fragile since I last hated myself enough to play it.
>>
>>573415809
Or you could start a new game and debug teleport yourself all the way over without generating map tiles inbetween, I guess

>>
>>573421143
They were probably gone before BN forked, then. I doubt they'd have intentionally removed them.
>>
>>573423881
I'm doing it on my own
The issue with extending the tiles is that effectively I'll have to make another layer of walls behind the top wall for example to have enough space and this is very hard to do during procgen
>>
>>573414018
Having the game set in an archipelago could be fun. You start off being washed ashore after being shipwrecked on some island and have to fashion a canoe or raft to leave; then you go around looting small islands to improve and expand your ship.
I even started sketching on a mod to make this real some years ago but I never got far. In my head it was easy just remove roads and bridges, make forests and cities smaller, and then replace the fields with water. But things are never easy and I couldn't get the worldgen close to what I wanted, not to mention things like enemies spawning in the water.
>>
File: overhang tiles.png (20 KB, 948x451)
20 KB PNG
>>573424086
Oh no, don't do that. Assuming you've assigned Y to the verical axis and 0 is the top of the map, what you need is to basically have the tiles at Y+1 overhang the tile at Y. Have a hastily doodled illustration.

You'll need to ensure you're drawing the tiles in ascending order from the top down, but then you can do things like have a tree that stands high enough the player can be partially hidden behind it.

You can also split the overhang off as a separate "draw this on top of tile Y" thing and add transparency to let players see through it when an object is on the obscured tile. Probably not necessary if it''s just the top of walls now and then, as they'll only cover the bottom of the tile and you're centering objects so even small ones will be above the overhang.
>>
>>573425725
Ah I see. This is probably worth trying.
I'm slightly skeptical because I dislike those overhangs in games, and I have plans for stuff that shows up on the lower half of the character sprites like mounts. But it's probably worth trying (the extra transparency feature might be too much to attempt, I've had enough issue implementing line of sight).
>>
>>573426142
Shouldn't have any issues with LoS, this doesn't need to change the contents of the tiles, it's purely cosmetic if you code it right. And if you like, the "transparency" can be as dead simple as "if there's anything at all in the tile above, draw the short wall instead of the overhang one"

It's a global unique, I believe and also needs to spawn quite far from cities in a forest tile.
It's definitely still in the game and you can even debug it in (debug menu, map, overmap editor, place overmap special, search for strangle_temple) if you find a petrified eye and really want to try it out.

Trickwire kicks ass. It's good you can't grab bare walls or else it'd be ridiculous.

cdda minor spoilers for hub 01
you can just torch the door top right from the intercom and theres like 3 months worth of mres in there, maybe more and if you torch the doors to sneak inside via the hidden staircase, grenades dont seem to count as kills, so you can just murder your way inside pretty far without breaking trading. seems a tad broken.

oh and everyone carries glocks with 22 round magazines, so if you were ever looking for high capacity glawk mags, theres a gold mine down there. not 33 round mags for some reason, im guessing its because 33 round mags dont fit in holsters

So currently it looks like this. I think it's a big improvement however it does look a bit weird when I'm to the south of the wall due to the LOS.
Overhangs currently count as part of the cell above the shaded wall. The shaded wall block vision, so the overhang will also be shaded (out of view), but that looks a bit weird. If I stand to the north of the wall, it looks fine.
This can be worked around but I think it's probably a bit of work in Godot since all the renderings right now are cell-aligned tilemaps and having per-cell rendering rule is also annoying performance wise in Godot (it can be worked around, but annoying).
I'll stick to this scheme while I do something else though.

You're doing the tacoma bartender quest, right?

Seed quests are a pain in the ass. The bartender asks for 10 sugar beet seeds, the npc at the church retreat asks for 10 cactus seeds, the isherwood guy asks for 100 wheat seeds. But you only find seeds in places where you'd expect them to be in singular amounts, never in bulk. Sugar beets themselves are pretty rare if you want to extract seeds from them.
Your best bet for finding enough seeds is either hitting up many farm supply stores/hardware stores/gardening supply - those have shelves with random seeds in them so you can often find 1-2 seeds per store, or finding enough city house variants with small gardens and farm buildings with small amounts of random seeds on the floor. Farm silos never have anything but cattle fodder, those are useless. You want farm buildings like the tacoma farm where there's a bunch of seeds on shelves in the cellar (the cellar stuff might belong to the faction but I'm not sure if duplicates of the variant actually belong to the tacoma faction), the big wine cellar farm houses - those also have some seeds, the farm house with tall hedges on one side - there's a bunch of plants and seeds behind the building, some farm variants have greenhouses with some seeds on the floor. But there isn't a single spot where you can find enough, you'll have to gather them one by one.

Thoughts on Stoneshard and why it's really good or dogshit?
>>
>>573504034
I like it quite a bit.
Got 270 hours out of it so far.
It's pretty good at delivering the fantasy of a single mercenary roaming around, taking up contracts, hustling goods, exploring ruins, hunting game, taking down monsters, etc.

Yeah, it's huge.
There's four settlements (three towns and one tavern) that can give you procedurally generated contracts to clear one the three dungeons belonging to one of the three enemy category (bandits, undead, or cultists).
Then there's the major city - the capital of the territory you're in. It doesn't give out contracts directly, but it's the best place to sell and buy your stuff, and it's involved in a few quests.
Settlements themselves offer a handful of static quests as well.

All these key points are pretty far away from each other, so getting from one to another on foot takes quite a bit.
However, you unlock the caravan system which acts as your quick travel + portable inventory after you complete the introduction quest.
Quick travel uses some resources, so you're generally encouraged not to just mover around randomly, but shift your base from one settlement to another, and stick around for a while, completing quests and exploring the wilderness before moving to another key point.

Speaking of wilderness, there's stuff around - a bunch of randomly generated points of interests, like brigand camps, hunting spots, or caves.
Some static quest-related stuff as well.

Currently, the main questline stops abruptly when you reach the main city, and that generally would happen after you complete the quest chain in the starting village.
Afterwards, you basically just free-roam, guided by the suggested locations to get contracts and their recommended level.
You get some sub-goals, like hiring the followers (static NPCs who improve the functionality of you caravan) and maxing out their trust; improving your reputation in the capital, so you can trade there properly and buy the best gear; completing local quests, including a couple of boss fights etc.
However, for the most part, there's no more story after that point as of now.
The devs are planning on finishing out all the systems by the end of this year (so think, the end of the next year) first.

Finally managed to steal a dossier without detection, though I had to bring an EMP bomb to make it happen because apparently a queued alarm from the previous level still played on the current one, unless I knocked out the alarm power before it happened.

I mean I could literally enter the level, walk through three empty rooms and stand there, and it would tell me I failed and the facility was alerted. But no message about tripwires or anything. I save scummed and tried several different things but only the EMP worked.

I wish Flemenco was less buggy.

What does CDDA have that BN doesn't (that doesn't exist solely to make the game less fun?)
>>573563741
Yeah I played the tutorial and the like third room on my first contract randomly caused some fuckoff segfault. Feels like it has a lot of potential though, I love those spy/hacking style endless contract runner types
>>
>>573564653
CDDA has pockets, I guess.

The #1 cause of segfaults for me turned out to be looking at beds in the barracks. Pressing x and pointing at them will crash the game on the spot. Using the trickwire over them will do it, too, since it includes a look-at-this-tile display too.
>>
>>573564961
Pockets only exist because CDDA wants to fuck your ass with "length" and shit.

Random comment, but I really like the layout for the magic academy location from magiclysm. There's just something about it, it makes for an extremely comfy base
>the tower library
>the basement pool
>the open air grassed walkways to the smaller student's rooms
It's so good, whoever made that layout nailed it
>>
>>573584414
So far I've never seen that happen, though I thought it did a couple of times. Check your map, stairs and vents can be hidden behind lasers and shit. Furniture won't cover them, but traps can.
>>
>>573598858
No I mean the stairs straight up didn't spawn so it wouldn't let me onto the next floor, I had to abandon the mission
Fuck, I probably should have sent the log to the guy or something, slipped my mind

Huh, I've been playing for days across multiple characters and there's always been stairs. Sometimes hidden, but there.

My current (best) character's mission list, all successes, but with an * on this one 'cause I had to save scum and bring an EMP with me.
