Normally, a game has a "true ending" in which everyone is made happy and whole, and the main character reigns supreme having defeated every obstacle. This is even true of Undertale. What if the idea of Deltarune is that we can't do that?What if the point of having Kris as an independent character from the player is that it enables a negative emotional arc?Kris can change destiny with us, but it won't make them into a victorious hero that solved every problem like in other games. They'll still want us gone, because the lockpicking of the prophecy is going to be sad and grim for them

My hypothesis is that Gaster created the world of Deltarune as a pragmatic/cynical tool to be used in furthering the freeing of the Underground. Or maybe just some kind of escape like he was really gonna transfer the UT people there. Yet he discovered evil was afoot, some kind of primordial evil that can become present in any world like this. And at first he was looking at how to resolve this just for the sake of the mission, but as he grew to see how seemingly hopeless it was to fix the prophecy, he became obsessed with Deltarune as its own world that deserves to exist, and that's when he goes about contacting you for help.
