Something I've noticed is decks that "don't need the normal" also tend to normal summon bad cards. Basically every generic normal summon, even zoo, is worse than having your own normal summon 1 card starter that searches the whole deck.

If you can, I'd suggest locals since they tend to be lower power/casual. People also tend to be accommodating at them but be around or have someone around for supervision if they're younger. Master duel is fine, but a lot of players are locked in and sweaty on the ladder which is the only way he'll reliably get gems for stuff he wants to build.
