The romance just overburdens the other interpersonal relationships. Like Kris & Susie is a smoldering crater and everyone being honest with themselves knows it, because now all Susie will think about is Noelle. We're told every step she takes in ch5 dark world she's thinking about Noelle and her heartbeat. It's just fucking over. The good times are over. Everyone has had the experience of losing someone in their friend group to a head over heels romance. It just happens. It's over. The problem with the close friendship being over is we have to ask, what is left to compel us as the player? In ch4 we had Susie's shining smile radiating hope as we sealed the final fountain. Now instead Susie is literally living in CastleTown delusionally and she is inviting her new girlfriend THERE too. She even kicked Lancer out of the way for it. Kris seems to have basically chess mastered all this anyway as part of their plan that we're not allowed to know so it's not like there's much room to feel sympathy for Kris. Chapter 5 just ends on such a sour and lonely note unless you're on weird route.

Playing Side A and choosing all the Suselle options for the activities is a genuinely uncomfortable experience. The payoffs aren't even good. They fuck up the hammer game. i need an answer to all of those questions :-Why does nothing happen during the festival when everything had been set up to make it feel like such a highly anticipated event ?-Why set up Carol as a potential antagonist regarding Susie and Noelle's relationship during the festival, only to do nothing with it?-Why are half of the town's residents absent from the festival, with no one seeming to notice or comment on it?-Why does Susie seem to not care at all about what happened in Chapter 4 regarding the prophecy, and instead only seem to be thinking about going on a date with Noelle?I'm not trying to sound smart or act like I'm overanalyzing things. The only thing in the light world that seemed interesting or important at all was Onionsan's subplot, and they got unceremoniously killed off and made into something as mundane as fried food. Unsurprisingly, that subplot was centered on the lake which is seemingly connected to the dark worlds. Everything else is just social drama with no plot relevance, intentionally, to emphasize how dark worlds are grandoise video game adventures and the light world is just (a simulacrum of) real life.
