chapter 5 was so mediocre i still havent even had the will to finish it, the gameplay doesnt carry it enough since its good for the deltarune/undertale standard but still meh compared to other games. Got some opinions after replaying ch5(not collecting all pink coins this time cuz FUCK THAT)I totally get why this was supposed to release as a set with ch3+4. Waiting a year after ch4 was a big mistake, because the WAIT gave everyone a breather to reflect on ch4. But pacing wise, 5 was supposed to offer that breather. It's a more straightforward story so you had time to THINK about ch4. I hope that switch launch title money was worth it Toby.On the surface, this chapter is goofy but it's actually quite melancholic. This is the end of the formulaic adventures, the end of your choices being tracked probably(egg, shadow crystals, weird route). You're made to question whether you're really are the hero. You quite literally have to end the dream, kill the sentience of these kind flower friends with their hopecore attitude. You are killing (you)r dream of going on adventures to save the world.It also makes sense why ch5 has to happen after ch4, it's when the Darkners have the most amount of meta awareness, peeling away your suspension of disbelief and the story itself struggling to hold itself together. It's like the game itself is TRYING to reel you back into a comfortable space, and failing. Which is really interesting.I'm really excited for what ch6 and onward have to offer.

The light world is intentionally meant to feel unimportant and lame compared to the dark world. Susie explicitly talks about how important their dark world adventures feel compared to the rest of her life multiple times. The dark world is a video game where you quest to determine the fate of the world. It's mostly linear so you have few choices, but the few choices you make actually matter. The light world is more open-ended, but whether you skip most of it or do everything you can do makes no difference. Giving Asgore's bouquet to Toriel doesn't change the outcome. Giving Undyne's chocolates to Alphys doesn't change the outcome. Talking to Onionsan doesn't change the outcome. Doing stuff with Kris & Susie or Kris & Noelle instead of Susie & Noelle doesn't change the outcome. Picking Pizzapants's girlfriend won't change the outcome. The only way you can meaningfully change things in the light world is by forcing the dark world into it via the weird route. You can only be a hero in a video game because you are a big fish in a small pond. In real life, you are just one of many people in the world and nothing you do matters all that much. You could argue that the light world segments being unfun on purpose doesn't make them not unfun, but you're free to skip most of the light world content anyway so I don't think it drags down the game as long as you recognize what it's going for.

The main thing is by Chapter 4 you already know the story is setting up a tragic ending and the characters are struggling with it ahead of time. That's very powerful. The only game that I've played that also does that is Undertale, by introducing the hopes and the dreams of the monsters that you're forced to foil on your way out in the normal ending. Even that doesn't involve one of your best buddies dying the way Deltarune is implying, though.
