I'm going to attempt to do a very basic thing, something so basic that I think I leave myself open for insults as to how easily impressed I am: attempt to explain why I like a piece of writing that doesn't have an insane prose flex. One of the most striking facets of Lessons in Love for me is the intensity of perspective. Not exclusively, but the majority of scenes are filtered through Sensei's perception, and he definitely casts things in his own light. Over time, a distinctive character voice develops, and I find it interesting how often that voice comes under attack. Simply put, this is not how Sensei normally thinks. It's immediately obvious when you're pulled out of his caustic goo of a personality. Would this former writer of significant pretense abuse the same word, over and over again? What is "cute," philosophically? Is it something that bears so much weight? Perhaps my brain has grown warped through years of self-imposed chuuni isolation, but I think no. Every event in the text gets mapped onto this identical word. The word becomes divorced from its meaning and more akin to a funnel every thought is sluiced through, being debrided of any thoughts unrelated to the cuteness of Ami. Despite the passage being a series of variations on the idea that Ami is so cute (she is!), the impression I get is more like "the bug has brainwashing powers." Or, since Selebus has been known to play around with narrators, is this Sensei? Perhaps it could be some kind of projection of Ami, how she wishes Sensei would think instead of playing around with anti-Ami antagonists.
