[Insert dumbass edition here]

>What the heck is this
/indie/ is the general for all indie games, such as Age of Decadence, A Hat in Time, Axiom Verge, Baba Is You, Battle Brothers, Battlerite, Card City Nights 2, Cave Story, CrossCode, Cultist Simulator, Darkwood, DashBored, Dead Cells, The Desolate Hope, Disco Elysium, Environmental Station Alpha, FTL, Guacamelee!, Hollow Knight, Knytt, LISA, Lobotomy Corp, Machinarium, Middens, Monolith, Monster Train, Noita, OFF, OneShot, Rimworld, Rain World, Slap City, Slay the Spire, Starsector, Subnautica, Sunless Skies, Tooth and Tail, Underrail, VA-11 HALL-A, Yume Nikki, etc., as well as other games that just don't fit in any other general such as Atelier, Pillars of Eternity, Rayman, and Valkyria Chronicles. /jrpg/ is welcome. Idle games are cool too.

Mobile or consoles, Flash or Unity, freeware or early access. This place is a home for the indie game community and indie and obscure games that don't have a home. So be free to talk and share all your hidden gems, forgotten games and starving devs here.

>Can I talk about games that already have a general?
We mostly discuss games that are not popular enough for their own threads, however, all indie games are allowed. So talk about them if you want, but don't overdo it since you already have other generals for that.

Beat Broken Sword 4 and it is easily the worst one in the series.
It took the major issues of 3 of shitty controls, way too many swaps between the fixed cameras and terrible graphic options and fixed those mostly.
But in return everything else got worse. The visuals are worse, the VA is worse, the puzzles oh my god they broke their own well working system in ways that makes me wonder if this was a new team. Had to tab into a walkthrough so many times and turns out I just didn't get the interactable on the tiny specific cursor toggle only available from 1 specific perspective and standing at a specific angle. The game just refusing to letting you combine things or look at them for the clue you will need before the situation it wants you to do it. Previously many puzzle chains were advanced by talking more to NPCs after interacting with items and environment but that was never spread across multiple screens and maps with 2 minute of travel time between.
Plot is mostly the usual but also full of dumb deaths for forced drama and it's a bit too retard to see the chritsians fighting the mafia in a shootout.
Absolutely would not recommend playing unless you are invested into the series and want to play 5 after like I am doing.

Alright.
It's an incredibly low-budget game that feels like a solo version of Dark and Darker, but with a lot of emphasis put on what kind of loot you get: you want to end your current floor with expensive food items so that you can cook something good, and recover a lot of health and experience.

Like most games, you have swings (click), overhead hulk smash (scroll up) that deals more damage but cannot be combo'd, and a poke (scroll down) to use your weapon range, at the detriment of damage and stamina.
The combat isn't that deep: dodge is too slow to be reliable and enemies have good tracking, and there is no parry system, so either you backpedal constantly while poking, or you go in melee and do the good old Oblivion special: block, attack, block, attack...
>>
>>574011629

my main gripe with it is that it's too long but that's because I prefer metroidvanias to be short and sweet (also re-exploring the massive map after a power up or important event can be a hassle), but the amount of content and it's quality is truly impressive for the game's retail price

Trying out Solar Expanse, a game where you expand across the solar system, exploit it for resources, and maybe terraform the other planets for human habitation, all while racing against opposing space orgs that are trying to do the same thing.
It's kinda like if someone took a diet Kerbal and a diet Terra Invicta, stapled them together, and had the resulting abomination raised by uncle Aurora4x.
Very, *very* early access considering how many things are 'to be released', including alternate star systems, and that the enemy space orgs apparently don't really have any AI yet.

Go all the way out to Uranus and the inner planet nametags don't even render anymore. It's *really* far away.
But despite being very grounded, it's also pretty sci-fi, the tech tree has shit like fusion-powered rockets and (unimplemented) interstellar travel.

Starting a mission is easy, for now. You choose a destination, the spacecraft (which determines things like cargo space and how much 'return home' juice it can hold), the cargo, the launch vehicle (which determines how much junk it can launch and if it's reusable), and finally how much gas it has if you wanna be stingy.
The UI could use some work, but they've acknowledged that.

Finally done with The Message from Deep Space.
I really wanted a new Sennaar-like game, and I'm not sure if this was it.
I enjoyed figuring some of the transmissions out, but it was way too long. A lot of it felt like pointless padding, though maybe it was there to give more context to retards.

Now, should I finally play Onirism?

I don't have much of an issue with how big space is, but what really freaks me out is the sheer amount of hydrogen concentrated in the sun, and the sun's not even that big for a star. It's sitting there fusing hydrogen every second of every day for billions of years, and there's so much of the stuff that the sun accounts for 99.86% of the entire solar system's mass, mostly as the lightest atomic element.
Space is huge, but it's also completely empty on average. Stars and star nurseries aren't, and I think that's way freakier.

I'll finish it tomorrow, one chapter left. Looks like I'm on track for the "happy" ending. There are normal and bad endings, but I don't know if I'd be compelled to replay for them, not unless the story goes in a dramatically different direction. My issue with these kinds of choices in story games is that I can't help only wanting the best outcome if it's available. These aren't trolley problem-tier decisions. But I guess other players might still see it another way.

As far as the puzzles go, I appreciate how there are optional ones to find that are a bit more challenging. It's almost like a mini The Witness.

> Back in 2016, we sold Zachtronics to a company called Alliance, who we worked for as employees and made all the Zachtronics games from SHENZHEN I/O onward. In 2022 we stopped working for them and started a new studio called Coincidence, which we own and run as a sort of co-op that allows us to work on projects together, or not together, or anything in-between. (By "we" I mean the five of us who made all the Zachtronics games from SHENZHEN I/O onward; the team was much more dynamic before that, as described in the first few pages of ZACH-LIKE.)

> I still work for Alliance and maintain the Zachtronics games, but we don't own any of that IP, so anything new we make is going to be attached to the new studio and the new name.

>(I did spend a year teaching computer science at a public high school, but that overlapped the last year of Zachtronics, rather than being between Zachtronics and Coincidence like it's often reported.)

>At Coincidence, we have released two puzzle games so far, Kaizen: A Factory Story and U.V.S. Nirmana, and have more (four?) in the works. I'm hoping that I'll get to work on some less-obviously-in-the-genre games soon, but I haven't git initted anything yet so I guess it's too early to say.

>The Acid Wizards are still consulting on the project, actually it was the Acid Wizards who set everything up and contacted us at Hooded Horse about becoming involved as publisher. Here's some quotes from them:
>“Crafting the world of Darkwood was a very challenging and long journey for the team,” says Acid Wizard co-founder Gustaw Stachaszewski. “After an experience like that, you become emotionally attached to your work. We know that the fans have been eagerly awaiting a continuation of Darkwood. For years, the idea of handing over our baby to another studio was something unthinkable for us. But, after it became evident that working together is not viable anymore, we decided that Darkwood should live on, even if not directly through our work.”
>“We're genuinely excited to pass on the torch to Ice-Pick Lodge - creators whose work on Pathologic has inspired us for years. The team at IPL really gets what makes Darkwood a unique experience. We believe they will not only honor its spirit but will create something truly exceptional. As for us, we'll be in the background, making sure it stays true to the original vision.”

Like the unnerving high quality pixel art, the stuff you spend the overwhelming majority of the game looking at and interacting with, which is going to be the visual focus of many if not the majority of the most memorable moments of playing the game. That they've replaced with mediocre 3D models.
>>
>>574083332
I'm somewhat hopeful that the style is still subject to change

I remember they floated the idea of passing off the IP years earlier. And I remember wishfully thinking that IPL would probably be the only people I'd trust with that shit, so it's really funny that that pipe dream actually became real.
But I do agree the style of the new game looks whack as hell.
Plus I hope the game has no connection to the previous game except in name. It takes place on the other side of the continent, so there is hope.
Honestly, Darkwood doesn't need a sequel, I'd much rather see a game LIKE Darkwood, if that makes sense.
Also forgot the name, but I believe the Darkwood project lead is working on some new game.

I assume anon meant "because they can." Why not? Why make the blood green, or the hair long, or the pistol magazine hold 10 rounds? Artistic choice, the basis of all art or entertainment. >the Darkwood project lead is working on some new game
https://bloody-disgusting.com/video-games/3941739/darkwood-co-creator-announces-psychological-horror-title-hoarder-trailer/
>The goal of the game is simple: declutter a house abandoned by a hoarder. You’ll start with the typical hand-holding of a job simulator: checklists, quest markers and clearly-defined goals. However, beneath the trash is a basement that leads to a facility that defies geometry. As you descend into said basement, the game puts away the support system you had at the beginning, leaving you to fend for yourself.
>Once you descend, a day-and-night cycle begins in the game, and the facility you find becomes your new home. Each day, you’ll explore more of it, as it changes over time and through your actions. You’ll operate an underwater submarine to explore the deep-sea floor, viewed through a LiDAR scanner. Meanwhile, back in the outside world, you’ll come across a variety of strange finds, which can be brought back to your base and used as salvage to unlock new parts of the facility, upgrade existing ones, or push the story forward.

The hyper realistic graphical fidelity a lot of games started going for have become increasingly expensive and time consuming to achieve while providing less and less noticeable graphical improvement over older games.
Ray tracing is the biggest example, its implementation difficult to notice over properly made lighting systems of old, and its implementation in some games even being a core graphical feature you cannot disable has bricked the performance on a lot of hardware. And one "solution" has just been to use AI to generate fake frames and pretend your framerate is actually higher than it is like if you printed your own obviously fake currency to pretend your bank account was bigger than it was.
Realistic graphical fidelity plateaued very sharply I'd say at the release of the witcher 3, which was over a decade ago at this point. Almost everything after that has been delusional developers chasing increasingly unreasonable and difficult to notice graphical standards or nvidia pushing scam graphics technology to developers so people will buy their increasingly expensive hardware just to be able to play games.

Just finished Witch of the Dark Castle. Ignore the 87% positive steam rating, this shit is like playing with tabletop with an awful railroading DM.
It frequently gives you choices that cause instant game over, it presents false choices that lead you to the same result no matter which you pick and it wastes your time with battles that result in game over because you shouldn't have chosen to fight at all. I mean there is a literal choice to fight a bronze golem and if you win the game says it topples over and crushes you, game over.
It has the description for how combat works at the beginning of every fight in the game with no way to skip it and if you reload your save which you will it has no option to skip already seen text.
Shit sucks.

With horror it honestly makes a lot of sense to keep things a bit low fidelity.
Monsters and areas with distinct designs that are just poorly rendered enough for the player to have to fill in the blanks with a little imagination (Silent Hill, RE1,2 and 3, Signalis and so on) are much more effective for a lot of people than modern big spectacle horror games.

I mean morally? I always thought that killing people living in a shit world would be a mercy kill, but apparently I'm the only person thinking that?

here is an idea: make a super light weight 2d slop that runs on a potato, or in a internet browser even.

have you seem how much downloads that task bar idle game got? Idle games are overdone at this point, but what made people download was how light and casual it looks.

All these slop >>574131025 have a common denominator: all 3d games.
>>
>>574150328
the next fest was full of little destkop games, I assume all of them flopped because I heard about none of them again.
>>
>>574150535
i didn't pay attention to the next fest, but I bet they all tried to ride on the success of the main one (that was in the top steam downloads at some point) without offering nothing new, while also speedrunning the development of their product. Its always the same story.

I am merely trying to suggest a casual 2d game in vein of >>574127686
>>
Any blasphemous 2 enjoyers
I just got the mea culpa and holy fuck this is awful. It's way weaker and slower than the Ruego, and the empowered shit goes away when taking one tick of damage and punishes you even further with guilt. Who the fuck thought of this? It's just a straight downgrade
>>
>>574152831
Oh that's a good idea, I should keep playing one. It was pretty decent.

If I had a dollar for every community-made major game expansion titled Multiverse, I'd have two dollars, which isn't a lot but it's weird it happened twice.

i did not buy the mea culpa dlc
i'm not too surprised though, none of the weapons in 2 felt amazing compared to just the sword in 1

For me it's Earth getting about 1kW of power per square meter, you can feel how it burns when go outside. At 1AU, only two billionth on a sphere surface. For billions of years. So many energy wasted.

it filters anyone that cares about their time because digging through the entire world for 8 hours just to find the 3 spells you actually need while avoiding any random instant death pixel is not fun or particularly engaging
