They are not a "Mario and Luigi studio", they do for-hire work and there is a zero chance they waited for Nintendo to release Brothership instead of taking on their next project ahead, it's a completely different situation from when Alphadream was around where they pretty much lived and died for Nintendo, and that is not getting into the fact that even if for whatever reason Nintendo decided to ask them to do a new ML instantly without seeing if the game sold well or not a new one will still take a while to be made since it will surely be an attempt at a Switch 2 game with fancier graphics and assets.

No other game before or after it made traversal of the open environment feel so organic and tied to the central gameplay loop (get to high ground, see landmark and mark map accordingly, go there)

Since having content that gives meaningful progression between your MSQ means you can't have it in the MSQ without it feeling like your time was wasted for interacting with the optional content. If BOTW didn't have weapon durability and used weapons as the reward for doing open-world content, I would think it's at least an Elden Ring-tier open world, but that would come with the caveat that it would also have the same problem as Elden Ring, where replays are a slog to get through because you did all the content on your first playthrough, so you're just beelining to the stuff you want to do.

If the measure of a game in your eyes is how much it just does for you (marking your own map vs having the game do it) why even play games in the first place? BotW benefits those with big imaginations, just like old games did. The sense of wonder and exploration is still unmatched, IMHO.

All open world means is that the entire world is yours to explore without loading in-between the majority of locations.What each game decides to do with it is something else entirely and will depend on the genre and focus of the game. Mario Kart World for example just used it for the "connected tracks" gimmick and a chill drive-around doing challenges side-mode, which is completely different from how Pokemon or Zelda used their open world maps.The fact you called Odyssey open world up there is also flat out nuts.

I wish they didn't make all of the Emerald Rush events time limited instead of just adding the missions permanently. Even aside from the fact that it means that people will be locked out of missions when Nintendo decides not to rerun them at a certain point, it makes you drop whatever other game you're playing every month for a while.
