In ML2 there was a charm skill so you could just steal health/soldiers from the enemy. The red portion of your health bar are injured soldiers you can recover for free or with healing magic. Dead soldiers ie. when your max health decreases you have to pay to replenish. The amount of soldiers that die when an enemy attacks depend on one of your stats but I don't remember which one. Sturdier units suffer less casualties. Higher level hospitals/barracks cut the time in days to heal/replenish soldiers.
