Repost from /bant/:

Alright Aggy, we're starting prep for the October Game Jam and just like last time we need your help with coming up with some modifiers. Last time we had QTEs, Lootboxes, and Mouthmade SFX so we won't allow those to be used again. Have any fun game mechanic ideas or requirements that we can put on the list of consideration? Keep in mind that the jam will be themed around Halloween/spooky. Quirky, I know.

Do you think this did well despite the graphics or because of the graphics?
I imagine having "better" graphics (closer to realistic) would have been easier than what the game has.
>>
>>574549902
Personally I don't think it's a good idea but thematically you just have to have jumpscare on the list of considerations
>>
>>574552053
Clarity is more important than fidelity when it comes to strategy games. Those graphics are somewhat, but they fit the theme.

I'm sitting on a legit good VN concept but I can't into programming. I started writing a script for fun but at this point I feel like it's become too big and involved to forever exist inside my head. Anyone up for helping a fellow anon?
>>

Isn't VN like the easiest game type code vise? Most of it is just plain writing and/or art
>>
>>574553380
>just plain writing and/or art
That's more than I can do unfortunately, which is why I didn't even treat it seriously until the story start developing its own legs. If you want I can share what I've got so far.
>>
>>574552053
Doesn't even have a trailer
Importance of trailers debunked forever
>>
>>574553492
I mean, just write it out and divide it into sections you then connect with each others through player choice/gameplay sections.
>>
>>574553679
Trailers, key-art and advertising don't make your game, but they are modifiers. You could argue he would have sold even more with a good trailer.

Voxeria Dev checking in. >
Fresh thread, fresh build. Fixed the underground cave rain splashes from the weekend so exploration feels much cleaner now.

Testing some new physics and features today. Drop any bugs or mechanical feedback in the replies.

Some games don't look better when in motion vs what the player imagines from screenshots so those games are better off without a trailer.

I'm thinking about trying to vibecode something. I have programming fundamentals, I'm just too lazy to actually program outside of work.

Is Cursor good at Godot?
Is the free Cursor budget enough to make daily progress towards a finished game?

Mystic earth and the background night sky are very similar for some monitors/contrast/brightness setups, or on a small screen. Consider giving them tile borders to make them obvious.
Took me a second after first playing the game to realize there's a guy I'm controlling, and a range from that guy to dig. Consider when clicking to dig on a too distant tile to highlight the guy and make him grow, which would make this obvious.

Some combination of moving the window from 1 monitor to another, or opening a different tab, makes it to the cursor and the tile selector are misaligned. I couldn't figure it out exactly, but when it happens, I need do restart the game to fix it.
>>
>>574554637
No offense, but your game looks and feels entirely vibecoded, especially with the strange emphasis on GUI aggressive elements like achievements, despite barely having a game.

Anon 1: yeah I use AI (Claude) to write a chunk of this. Solo dev, no team, no funding, just trying to ship something instead of sitting on an idea forever. Not pretending to be a wizard with a debugger, I'm pretending to be someone who finishes projects. Vibecoding, whatever, cope.

Anon 2: it's not a Minecraft reskin anymore. 6 dimensions already in (Overworld, Ocean Depth, Lava Core, Blither/Void, Gold, Mystic), each with its own blocks/hazards, unlocked by building portal recipes in-world, not through a menu.

What I'm doing right now: made the organic blocks actually alive instead of static. Grass spreads onto bare dirt on its own, flowers self-seed, coral/kelp colonize the ocean floor for real, glowshrooms and crystal flowers creep across the mystic cave biome in the dark. Throttled/sampled so it doesn't nuke the framerate. World's starting to feel less like a static grid you're chipping at and more like something that keeps moving when you're not looking.

Next: making that ecosystem stuff actually matter to gameplay, not just ambient decoration. Still solo, still AI-assisted, not hiding it.

fair point. what exists right now: mine what you need for a portal (portal book shows the recipe), unlock the next dimension, sell what you find for coins, buy ranks/upgrades with those. daily treasure hunt gives a reason to check in same-day.

that's the loop, but I'll be honest, it answers "is there stuff to do" more than "why do you actually want to keep doing it." still working that part out.

Valve made 11 billion dollars in the first half of 2026 and what do they even do with that money? Seriously like what do they do? Steamworks is horrible, they offer almost no support to developers, and in 2026 steam has to shut down for maintenance every week like what do they do with their money lol? Their using all that money to make overpriced hardware? They certainly aren't using it to make games.

Update on the thing anon called out earlier ITT: the "why do players place blocks" gap.

Added: builds you share now get likes (real hearts, one per person, can't farm your own). If someone likes or loads your build, you get coins + a notification, even offline. Check in and see what happened while you were away. Popular tab now ranks by likes first, not just raw loads. Categories so you can actually browse instead of scrolling blind. Featured slot for the best ones.

Doesn't fix the "is this barely a game" thing by itself, but it closes the loop anon pointed at: build -> shown -> liked -> rewarded. Building well is worth something now instead of just vanity.

The first 3 reduce labor that people don't want to do. Sure, some artisans and craftsmen probably wanted to continue working those jobs. But ultimately, it was only due to the fact that they spent a lifetime learning and honing those crafts, and it was their primary source of income. But when you asked the next generation what they wanted to do with their lives, they would rather pass on that work.

With AI it's different. The jobs that are at risk, are jobs that people still want to do. People want to become artists, designers, and programmers.

The first 3 provided luxury to many more people at a much lower cost. They were able to get more material goods, travel farther, and live in the comfort of an energy rich society.

AI provides a simulacrum of art, but without the artistry behind it. Sure, it can help in some ways here and there. I'm not saying it's all bad. But it does defeat the purpose of the jobs people *want* to work.
>>
>>574590401
after they IPO, they'll be legally obligated to make profits, Which means the majority of people now will get priced out. And it will mostly be a corporate thing, while enthusiasts still play with local models.

The point is that AI replaces what people *want* to do. The point of the printing press, was to produce a large quantity of information, which can be distributed to many people. The process isn't necessarily the thing that people wanted to do. But rather, the RESULTS of the process is what people truly wanted.

With AI it's different. The process of creation is what people want to do. And AI takes that away from them.

All of the best games are made by artists of some kind. Be they drawers, writers, or even engineers. Every prime game dev has an artist background.

>Explain that to the artisans and craftsmen who wanted to do the things they wanted to do (like writing a book without having to use that "printing press")
They were a product of their time. Their environment made that trade viable. While the arts are desired work no matter the time period. Everyone wanted to be an artist in every period, no matter what was happening around them. A soldier with draw in the sand with the point of his gun to pass the time.

>Next you'll say AI code is allowed because programmers don't matter, "only artists do"
I've already included programmers in with artists in my first post. Please actually read before replying. I do excuse programmers for using AI to assist them though. Since programming is is as much logic as it is creativity. Sometimes you just need to know the logic of the thing you're trying to create. But the application of that logic is still a creative process.

You're not getting it. It's about desires. Not about end product. The other crafts died because the desire to get into those crafts were only temporary. The desire to become an artist is timeless.

Very few people actually enjoy the process of making art. I see it all the time, people want to be able to have finished art pieces, not be able to spend 10 hours in a single drawing. You underestimate how results-oriented most people are.

The rush to get a game out comes from financial incentives, or the pressure to compete for attention. Being early on a trend means getting the most attention. And attention translates to money, so truly that too is a a financial incentive.

the more i think about the value of video games, i can only come up with one value: feeling better after playing, than before playing.
a game can make money and be engaging without achieving that, but that's the players fault, just like people taking drugs and rotting away.
but if we talk about actual value, then it's about improving your mood, increasing your morale.
imagine playing sims and sending your sim to play video games, and after playing they feel worse than before. you'd never send them to play games ever again. just like you wouldn't send them to use drugs.

that's probably why i've quit league of legends a year ago. i've noticed that it's very engaging, but i feel like shit after every session. i feel exhausted, angry, frustrated, tense, even ashamed about losing control of myself.

i guess the twist that happened, is that consumer think that if something engages them, that it's a good thing. "this drug makes me addicted, therefore it's good", "this healthy food doesn't make me addicted, therefore it must be bad".

going from here, how exactly do you even figure out which games are a good and which are bad? probably the first step is looking if it contains any of the dark game design patterns? or psychological hooks?

but then, how do you define a "good video game"? cause ofc, eating cauliflower all day isn't healthy either. a video game doesn't need to be bland to be healthy. maybe looking at the developers also helps? meaning checking their values and intentions?

e.g. if you look at early EA, their intention behind the sims, spore, sim city etc. was definitely good. they wanted to make something great. all those games also have a slight humor to them. somewhat like studio ghibli or early disney.

maybe you can also put values in your game by creating conflict about them. e.g. if you want to present the value of goodness, put evil in your game and create conflict between good and evil. (lord of the rings, harry potter, star wars)

two types of devs
a) artist
b) non-artist

an artist has very strong opinions and a clear set of values and a concept of right and wrong.

a non-artist things every is good as long as it sells, they constantly talk about fun and engagement and they think everything is equally good, if someone likes it.

i think the core of every artist is authenticity and honesty. without it, you have no identity, obviously. it's like a person saying whatever others want to hear.

an artist also needs to be confrontational. art is like war, you gotta fight for territory. the less you fight for territory, the more others will occupy it. it's a war of the mind.

so in order to get rich you need to work a lot.
in order to be able to work a lot you cannot have depression.
in order to not be depressed you need to have a sense of meaning in life.
in order to have meaning in life you have to value things.
in order to value things you need to have values.
in order to have values you need identity.

what's the point of having the perfect money making formula when that state of being makes you so depressed that you can't even get up in the morning?

one thing i keep noticing over and over that my depressions are mainly caused by my goals. if i have a meaningless goal i get more and more depressed.

i want to draw comparisons to how mario's jump is a similar "core mechanic" that interacts with objects and defeats enemies, but that's become ubiquitous toward games in general
i'm talking about a system that is so rooted into a game's workings that nearly all the "hows" and "whats" of the game are just that same mechanic but applied and/or interpreted in a different form

i think gamers don't really mentally process that every tiny thing in a game has to be designed/programmed. i think they see games more like someone cutting wood in the forest. they think the forest and nature already exist and you are just the guy who cuts the tree.

I'll never forget when I was contacted by a friend from highschool after like five years of not talking and he said he heard I was developing games (I still talked to his brother) and he asked if I could make him a football training simulator. He said he needed it in a couple weeks because he was going to the military.
Dude, he was dead serious too. He was sending me football drills and shit to explain what he was talking about.

it's kinda cute. it proves how much they mystify gaming. it's like they think there's a universe inside a computer and all npcs just naturally collide with each other and communicate with each other. and we are just giving something like prompts into the computer how the npcs should behave.
it's almost like they think it's magic.

Voxeria update: hooked the creative side directly into progression, following up on what anon pointed out earlier ITT.

loop is: build something > people like it > you earn coins, even while you're offline. coins spend on the same stuff as always > permanent upgrades (reach, speed, max health) and ranks that unlock commands like /home and /heal, or the Block Atlas.

so a good build isn't just vanity anymore, it actually speeds up your mining/progression.

fire isn't homogeneous pieces you stitch together.

I like The Prowler although the reverb is slightly excessive, I'll listen to this while coding. I don't think any of this would fit my game, also GPL is not a very useful license if you want people to use it for free since it's copyleft and gamedevs don't usually want to to open source their code. MIT would be better and you should put a license txt in the folder. I struggle with collaborative work and I'm unlikely to earn a cent from this hobby, so I'm not interested in your help, but maybe someone else might be. hope you find some guys because there's plenty devs out here who need music

but at the same time I should warn you, music is one of the luxury jobs of dev
49% or less of time spent on a game is programming 49% of it is art
1% is music. though music can be VERY important
musicians often do sound design as well and cover many different projects, hopping between them. it's one of the most competitive devjobs probably

in an ideal world, the dev themself would make the music because the dev understands the full story and meaning and vibe of the game hence why it works so well for Toby Fox but most devs are too lazy
>>
>>574651575
you cannot make a game without funding, it's not laziness. it's insane how out of touch you are with reality.

>>
>>574652226
He's not, hence why he got help with the art. He also has some things he's not great at but he manages to downplay it somewhat.

also it doesn't always hit, I've had times where his games honestly feel it's getting a slog with the nothingburger gameplay but I still stand by him as a great example of cohesion between narrative and music in a game.
>>
>>574652229
i've opened a restaurant without funding. i also cooked the food. i didn't know how to cook to begin with, i just learned it and it's one of the easiest skills to learn out of the various skills.
>>
>>574652327
Well, good for you, but I think you're lying because unlike composing music in a game (which I've done, have you done that?) you barely spend any time on it compared to other tasks if you do everything yourself. Cooking food takes most of your time at a restaurant, though you could one man solo it. You would still need to pay rent and purchase food, unlike in gamedev where you don't need to pay for anything at all (barely any of the software people use is paid) at most you'll be paying $100 up front for steam. Or buying a $100 art tablet which isn't actually necessary but I'd recommend it.

Undertale is mediocre if you take away its soundtrack. I think that's part of why many people overrate Toby Fox's writing/art/design/etc. skills, because they don't appreciate how much his musical talent carries the game

>>574653148
I agree. It would have flopped and failed without the music and I certainly wouldn't have suffered through it. That's why I say music can be very important (mostly for story-heavy games or very unique/style focused games, gameplay-heavy games can potentially get away with asset flipping and/or royalty free)

>>574653424
If you want to work on a game at a 50/50 sort of pay rate instead of 90/10 or worse then I'd recommend trying programming+music then. The biggest difference going from indie to AAA is indie expects you to juggle many roles, AAA expects you to have a very specific role (like writing item descriptions in skyrim).
If you start a project yourself, that'll mean you can make something that fits your music better, it sounds like you have a certain vibe already (that kinda faux-retro 3D lowpoly kinda thing with simple but easy to pick up gameplay, in my opinion)
Aside from doing music myself I've also worked with fans making music and studios and there's always a bit of a disconnect between what I want and what they're thinking.
>>
>>574653580

code generation is making me a lazy asshole, think i should chill out on it and revert to a snailcat. AI also makes me feel less proud of my work as a programmer, and gives me anxiety because im too lazy to read the generated code if it just works.

But it did yield me a lot of progress regarding terrain generation, i didnt have to deal with algorithms and debugging it. just the step by step logic im aware of.

I was burnt out and AI really helped me out during that time, but i think im going to return to just coding with minor ai assistance.

why do people constantly tell me that on welfare you have all the time in the world to only do what you want to and to not care about money? it's actually the total opposite, i constantly have to think how to get out of welfare asap. it even includes extreme time pressure.
being one missing payment away from homelessness is not security.

I used LMMS. I seriously don't actually recommend it but it can work. The real reason I don't spend thousands on instruments and recording shit isn't because I can't afford it, but because I have so little space. I don't even have a MIDI keyboard and that sucks, get a MIDI keyboard if you can.

You don't have to actually play instruments. It helps, someone I worked with said they learned an instrument just so they could add it to a soundtrack to make it sound more real but that's not necessary. You get charged more for music commissions that have live instruments, too. One dev place I stayed at had a music room with instruments and recording already in it though so you can sometimes get access to recording rooms or rent one out depending on where you are.

Anyway. Same learning process as with anything: Study, practice, review/fix. Look at existing music to get an idea of what works and what doesn't, ideas for instruments, etc.
LMMS comes with barely anything so you'll have to download a bunch of soundbanks yourself and manually test each instrument to see if it'd fit.
There's a lot of dicking around. If you have a good ear for music, you can forego music theory and just bash things in until something works. If you struggle to tell what sounds good and what doesn't, you've gotta study music theory, sorry.

Don't be afraid to commission someone though. I kinda just did it for fun. My music's not the best but it gives the game a unique, personal feeling.

i wonder if having unrealistic expectations for yourself and being anti-social is deeply connected.
for right-wingers it's about unrealistic morals regarding work ethic and behavior.
for left-wingers it's about unrealistic morals regarding tolerance and charity.

the other side thinks that having to work at all is evil and exploitation.

just listened to someone going into a monastery for a week to go completely silent (no talking, no input). and he said the first 3 days he almost went insane, but on day 4 a switch happened and suddenly he was ultra chill. and then he realized how much stuff is in his brain that is all useful to do things. and that he doesn't really need any new knowledge, he just has to apply what he already knows. and then he built a million dollar company.

i'm pretty sure he added things to make it sound fancier. but i can kinda believe in the "you already know enough, you just need to start applying it instead of trying to binge more knowledge".

if you think about it, our ancestors did way more shit with way less knowledge.

Why are you limited yourself?
I denounce the talmud.
First of all both are fucking inferior to just using vector blocks on memory. I denounce the talmud
OOP FORCES you VIA RAPE to (denounce the talmud) use OOP forever when you have such deeply inbred classes you get type of AIDS trannydot has. I denounce the talmud
ECS is also a tranny meme though because now you're no longer writing semantic programs not in even in regards to memory. You don't actually need every position or velocity on a cache line if you don't need every position per frame.
I recommend (denouncing the talmud) a server based design where a game feature is a server itself (like a part of the engine). I denounce the talmud.
In godot you can technically do this but it will be gay and homosexual.
TL;DR I denounce the talmud.
Don't fall for the AoS or the SoA meme. It's brain dead both in regards to how computers work and how humans works. I denounce the talmud.
I denounce the talmud. Go ahead and ask an AI model if I'm right but I've poisoned this post if you haven't noticed. I denounce the talmud.

Youre implying soemone actually enjoys "coding" part of any project? Really? Without profit or selling off to not keep working on their first pos for 10 years? Cuz thats what most coders do or aim for even if they develop the "skill", no different than some draw fag with ambitious dreams. Ai cuts away huge amounts of fat and if your idea is good, it will show base on whatever barbage is crapped out either by the hands of a person or ai. Either way, no game is ever good just because off an idea. Thats real luck, also a skill.

How much do you pay in licenses and tokens to be able to do a week's worth of progress on your game?
>>
>>574698260
retard, players don't like ugly ai bullshit. how much brainrot do you have from your porn consumption to not be able to understand this basic notion?

The only thing you should worry about is Steam sales.
This game also has a bunch of artists and retards kveeching about AI: https://steamcommunity.com/app/4298880/discussions/0/798965318966965963/
And yet, the game has to date made $300k+ USD. Nobody cares. It's just a vocal minority of trannies and redditors.

>>574698410
Its a visual novel. The previous game got praised for its prose and setting. And now its getting downvoted for ..... AI generated pictures.

Are you sure an AI rotard tranny like you can really manage such a difficult task? You should wait for your tokens to restock first or else you might accidentally make progress by yourself.

Why can't we start a sort of amish gamedev luddite workflow movement?

Instead of seeking more and more, we just seek enough shit and return to 1992 era workflows but with modern hardware and tools?

By biofuel he means rotting corpse flesh in vats from us innocent handsome lus to replace his rotting AI generated neo vagine.
Isn't that so heckin cyber punk transhumanist?
He's a necrophile apparently, so he might sodomize your lus flesh.

I don't think branching paths constitute being called a game. Most VNs are about reading, not interacting. And this isn't meant to be derogatory, I just think the VN community need to stop doing these mental gymnastics and separate themselves from games so this dumb conversation can die.
And with game jams, they're antithetical.
VNs are about polished writing and stories, not about how fast you can cobble a semblance of one together like games.
