Played through King Exit and Demons Roots, and need to vent a bit about both. Initially started Demons Roots on its own since I didn't look up beforehand how relevant the prior game was due to fear of spoilers, aside from remembering some people mention it's optional. However, I decided to go back to play King Exit midway through Demons Roots when the game literally name drops it. Glad I did, since the additional context from the first game really helps flesh out some later stuff in Demons Roots. Overall, I think King Exit starts out weak but gets better later aside from the final dungeon dragging on a bit, whereas Demons Roots starts out stronger and has a great midgame, but kind of feels like it falls apart pacing wise towards the end after the first proper emperor fight, with plot contrivances, skips and sudden background lore dumps like the game's hurrying to end itself. The emperor in general was a trash villain. For all the buildup I was expecting something more interesting than what basically amounts to an overpowered force of evil incarnate for what feels badly established reasons that are dumped right at the end out of the blue. Though the ending itself got me good. Fuck you, I love it and hate it.Also, every JRPG needs an area like Doremi. I really liked whoring out the party, and the way it's presented in a comedic lighthearted fashion. Also works as a welcome reprieve from all the darker stuff. I ended up liking the cadre too much to be able to bring myself to try out the bad end mode. In general I think both games were carried by the characters.

Personally I was pleasantly surprised with the quality of King Exit since I played Demon Roots first several years ago and know that KE was the dev's first game I expected something very basic and barebones but it ended up being quite interesting both story and gameplay wise. I may be biased because I like small interconnected environments which you get to become familiar with.
