Pretty much Powershot + Maelstrom is the only way to farm creeps quickly on WR. I've tried many different item combos and always go back to Maelstrom. It's mandatory IMO if you're going to go core. You can try some half-assed "ermahgerd farm heroes noob" attempt and go straight for your damage items while ganking but that shit's not happening reliably enough for you to forego creep farming. Even if you get an early Diffusal/Daedalus/Desolator/whatever, it's still not going to help you farm camps quickly. This also means Arcane Boots also mandatory for WR. If you're mid, Bottle is mandatory too, especially if you want some kills mid. When I go mid, it's just Bottle -> Brown Boots -> Maelstrom. Maelstrom is what helps you start farming more than one camp a minute, especially Ancient stacks. You can't farm Ancient stacks early game without Maelstrom on WR.

Does this mean you should rush straight to Mjollnir? Ehh not really. Mjollnir helps with farming but you already took like 12-15 minutes to farm that Maelstrom. You need to start using that Maelstrom's lightning procs to kill people and push waves/towers and then buy useful items because WR is like a hard carry who needs a bajillion gold and items to start being useful beyond being a shacklebot. That 2,500 gold to finish the Mjollnir is better spent on a damage item or BKB or whatever.

This is also why pros were obsessed about using Whirlwind (and the shitty shackle damage facet) on pos 1 WR but then ended up doing nothing with it because all they did was farm with it, and never fight. It was a dumb time because commentators would try to drum up drama screaming about how OP it is and all we got was shit like webm related until WR got gutted hard over several patches.

Is it worth it to start playing Dota as a new player? I constantly hear how this game is dying and all that. But is it true?

The first moba I got into was Deadlock, and after over 500 hours I learned that I really enjoy mobas. So I want to try Dota now.

And what characters are good to start with? In Deadlock my main is Victor, which is a drain tank/carry that damages himself and has a passive ult that makes him respawn at full health while stunning and damaging enemies around him.

Wraith king in dota has basically the same ult as Victor but he's a physical damage carry instead of a aoe drain guy.
Pudge has the aoe self damage toggle spell and also bebops hook and mokrills ult.

Deadlock heroes are amalgmations of Dota ones so to get one similar you have to pick what aspect you like

Alternative version of a hero with a different personality/background/whatever. It's kind of like a skin. You need to unlock the persona to use it, and then also equip skins that only with that persona.

e.g. Wei - Female Anti-Mage
Toy Pudge
Gay PA
Anime Davion and Mirana
Shota Invoker
etc.

What's the difference between the personas and arcanas that drastically change the heroes? Not much. Personas came long after arcanas were a thing so there is overlap. At the code level, they are separate types of the same hero.

Dota is old, so you'll always have people bitching and moaning that it's dying, etc. but it's one of those games with years of development and work and mechanics in it that you will spend years learning new shit constantly and then when you go out into the world to play different games, you'll realise how they are only a shadow of the depth Dota has. So at this point, I don't think it's too late to start learning to play Dota.
Especially while it's still got an active playerbase and the historic knowledgebase is still accessible (e.g. posters). And since you said you played 500 hours of Deadlock, you clearly have the mentality for it. But be warned Dota is a different beast from 3-D FPS games like Deadlock. You won't be able to headshot frag your way to victory like those games. Dota emphasises strategy and macro-planning more than micro-movements and reflexes. Yes that shit still matters for the game but even the best twitch reflex players can't solo carry the game if they and their teammates fuck up teamfights and playing the map.

There is a (somewhat broken) tutorial mode with a beginner's pool of heroes to start with. Just do the tutorial first and play some bot games to get used to the UI and shopping in-game. The newbie hero pool is good enough.

There's also currently an active co-op bot playerbase that gets drops for the event going on so you can jump into that and get carried too. Those games will end in 10-15 minutes so you won't ever get to reach lategame but you can practice basic controls and dicking around with heroes without worrying about losing no matter how hard you feed.
