I've always thought the poor sales of these KOF XIV DLC costumes are the reason SNK refuses to make outfits for their other games now. But holy shit, it's their own fault. Most of them are boring as fuck. Angel's is hot, but nobody plays her in XIV anyway. Plus, the choices were fucking terrible. That game killed itself just by being a dogshit game with terrible balance and one of the most boring showings at EVO (every single team was Omni Man + Rex Splods doing the same shit) and on top of that they had to gall to add microtransactions before fixing the game.

I'm trying to pick up COTW and I've never played an SNK game seriously before.
Could you recommend me a character who plays a relatively standard game but who has clear strengths and weaknesses?

Invincible VS was as relevant as that one game apparently showing how irrelevant CotW is and now people hype up Tokon and Avatar the same.
Now, I doubt that Tokon will crash and burn as hard at least tournaments wise (DBFZ players got to move somewhere).
Regardless, speaking of CotW it was delusional to think that its Season 3 actually competes with other games. No one would ever look at a new season of the game they don't play and decide to play it over shiny new releases. That window of opportunity was over for CotW two seasons ago, okay?
The only important thing that it shows is that SNK is willing to support their game scene even if it is dead relative to other games. It does count for something when you have Western devs abandoning MK1, INVS support or some other Japanese devs giving up on pushing their latest versions of the game such as VF5REVO and DOA6LR. It also lets the game and the company to stay in zeitgeist, even if most people don't really care.

Everyone, except for the most stupid or the most invested fans, knows and accepts that CotW won't get any more popular than it already is. There are no turnarounds in the space for the games that don't have an already established dormant fanbases.
Saying "CotW is dead because it doesn't get players at new tournaments, despite the S3" is about as meaningful as if you said that "CotW is dead because there's a strong influence of retrograde Mercury" or some shit. You don't even try to figure out why it is still there in the first place, despite being unpopular and abhor people who actually try to figure out the company strategy.

Maybe i'm not good enough speak on the game yet but after picking this game up with Rick's release and grinding rank ever since(climbed to gold so far and now aiming for plat) I have to say a lot of the things ppl told me about cotw neutral to convince me to pick it up if i'm not enjoying the nature of drive rush in SF6 was total bullshit.

Like after dealing with this neutral especially run chars, fuck me, i'll take checking drive rush over run jump, run up throw, run up stop outside sweep range and wild punish your run check with a long range poke all while also mixing in jumps, hops, and lighting fast advancing specials that are waaaay too safe.

It is dead in the sense that it won't meaningfully grow the audience and is only there to serve the current one.

Look, I wish being a better game was enough to be a game people would play over their main passion, but often enough people would either stick with the shitty game they got or take a break from playing seriously altogether rather than switch games.
Dunno if you know about TCGs, but do you know that despite quite shitty state of MTG and YGO both games still got a pretty big audience despite better games being out there? And unlike fighting games, you have to whale a lot to play them.
