I just finished the second part of the story, and man, I simply can't sympathize with Maxwell at all. All of her actions throughout the story felt like a self-fulfilling prophecy. Failing to attend Syuen's promotion and then lying about the reason, and most importantly, her actions in the last part just feel fucking stupid and ridiculous.Yeah, I get not wanting Syuen to commit a crime, but the board fucking killed eight people, blew up the lab, and almost got Laplace and Maxwell killed too, yet she somehow lashes out at Syuen for killing one of them to make the rest fall in line instead of handing them over to the authorities. Be serious for once, for fuck's sake. It's as if Syuen had been punched several times in the face by an MMA fighter, and then Maxwell got mad at her for flicking the fighter's forehead. I understand that Syuen isn't innocent at all, but Maxwell's actions come across as either naively idealistic or just plain stupid.In the end, I feel like her actions only pushed Syuen even deeper into the abyss, as we later in the campaign see her become a full-fledged monster in the way she treats nikkes who aren't part of Matis (especially Wardress), while Maxwell keeps up her dumb "I'm actually not the real me" act.Props to Laplace for always staying true to herself and being the anchor that keeps Syuen grounded. Without her, Syuen might have become another copy of the original Mustang.

Its not just traumatic or grimdark, we got Syuen shown to be pretty much flawed to the core, which I wished if they were gonna waste the tidbits of Liveryn finding out a proper way to atone from E.H, they had found better ways to deal with her flaws than the quick and easy shock that wasted two, maybe three characters if they gave up on Logey's existence. With this story, Syuen pays the price and it shows how warped her love is, Maxwell's principles are put in sharp focus, and Laplace has a more interesting role being the thing that she sees as an example of unfailing loyalty and heroism in contrast to her internal selfish efficiency. So I give it at least an 8/10.

I honestly think this is one of the best story events Shift Up has released.I went into it expecting some backstory on Matis and maybe a few "oh that's why Syuen acts like that" moments. Instead, I got emotionally nuked.The biggest surprise for me was Maxwell. Seeing her as a human completely changes how I look at her current character. She wasn't just "the scientist" behind Matis, she was warm, caring, and probably the closest thing Syuen had to a real family. Watching everything slowly fall apart was painful because you already know where it's heading, but you still hope it'll somehow end differently.Then there's Syuen. I'm not saying she's suddenly forgiven, but this event finally explains why she's so broken. Her upbringing was basically emotional abuse disguised as "raising a successor." Every adult around her either manipulated her or abandoned her. By the end, it felt less like watching a villain's origin story and more like watching a child lose every piece of her humanity.Laplace somehow managed to stay the beacon of hope throughout all of this, which made the darker moments hit even harder. Her optimism feels earned now instead of just being a character gimmick.What I loved most is that the event doesn't try to excuse anyone's actions. It gives context without saying, "Everything is okay now." That's good writing. It lets you understand the characters without demanding you forgive them.Maxwell's transformation was easily the hardest scene for me.
