This whole time I was thinking why is Maxwell in the flash back so different in personality, they are basically different characters to the maxwell we know. Then at the end I was like... oh... that's why, that's the whole point. I've been so used to Nikke as just being humans, that I forgot the original nikke story used to point towards the existential crisis of what it means to become nikke. Especially with stories like Pretty and Anis becoming a nikke nonchalantly and just being themselves. I like how nikke is going back to this direction, unless Nikke Maxwell is intentionally just trolling Syuen to punish her. Without any major spoilers for the ending of part 2 of Matis event, In my opinion Syuen is arguably the most infuriating character in Nikke.Why? Because she never takes responsibility for anything bad, always finding someone else to blame for bad choices she makes.
