Use a guide for every single game(trust me, makes your life so much easier and the games much more enjoyable. Rance 01 ->02 ->03 -> skip 4 and 5d ->VI ->sengoku -> quest -> IX and finally X. Kichikuou is not canon but it's still really good and completely optional if you are so inclined. (Also use a guide for the non rance games like dohna dohna and evenicle for the same reasons.)

It's pretty crummy that basically nothing comes of any of the investigation work we do prior to chapter 9. The only evidence that actually ended up mattering was Itou's testimony and the audio in the video of the first murder which the player wasn't privy to. I didn't think the mystery aspect of the last one was very strong, and despite all the interactive window dressing this one's unfortunately not much better in that regard.
