I find the morality theme in Undertale a bit meh because it's kinda spineless, instead of a serious consideration of what is right and wrong in this situation, the game just pulls a bunch of flavor text to make sure the monsters are a bunch of dindu noffins >Oh the bullet patterns are just their form of communicating! They don't know they are hurting someone!>Oh the monsters are just so weak and fragile compared to humans it's not a fair fight at all!There is no commitment at all, and it on the other hand makes how weakly the game judges you on neutral routes for killing what is essentially described as your wheelchair-ridden dementia-having grandma so weird>Aw I don't blame you just try to think carefully next time okay?It feels like Toby wrote himself into a corner because he wanted to push you towards pacifism but if he didn't give enough reason for why you are being attacked players would find killing them more reasonable and the Sans dialogue is just the band-aid for that Honestly the "you can reset" was reason enough (Double-standard with Flowey notwithstanding), I don't know why that other stuff needs to be here

It’s much more difficult to justify killing early game monsters than it is late game monsters. Undyne will chase you to the ends of the Earth to steal your soul. Mettaton wants to kill you, leave everyone trapped in the Underground and head for the surface alone, Asgore has killed 6 kids and Flowey is Flowey. Lots of the random monsters in the late game are aware of what they are doing. There is a progression from weak and innocent to more violent monsters in every route.
