I don't know how I feel about the space travel issue anymore, I was definitely over projecting my space pessimism onto the world of Fallout.

Doctor (I'm guessing Medico/Medicine in the spic version of the game) governs your ability to heal crippled limbs. First Aid allows you to heal more over time, and using it on yourself or an ally is like having infinite free stimpaks out of combat if your skill is high. I mean, yeah, That's how the 50's was. It'd be nice to see that part of the American psyche from that period expressed. Could be an interesting lens to add to the White Gloves Society, for example. I actually think it could be a really interesting thing to examine the decline in that religion's importance to the NCR as it absorbed settlements that didn't share the faith, resulting in the militarization seen in New Vegas.

Overall, it's disappointing that the setting doesn't explore this facet deeper.

Fallout 1: Probably anti-ghoul, but they're isolationists who don't get involved in much.
Fallout 2: Definitely would be discriminatory. Whether they'd actually kill them is unknown. We do know that a Paladin fought Marcus, but they eventually chilled out and built a settlement together.
Fallout 3: Anti-Ghoul. Worse than Enclave? No. Enclave is still at "exterminate them all". BoS isn't. Simple as.
Fallout 4: Anti-Ghoul. Worse than Enclave? No. Still not murdering them.

I mean, Fallout isn't literally the 50s. Notably, the American Government is about as corrupt as the Pedophile cabal and making a lot more aggressive moves in the years leading up to the end of the world.
The fun thing is that the people who were 20 and 30 in the 50s would be oeak voting ages in the following decades where homosexuality was federally legalized and transex individuals were recognized in some states. Those people should still be that way in Fallout, even if the transistor never materializes. As America became richer and richer, people would become less religious naturally, and as America became more totalitarian, I could see the Enclave attempting to smother the fading curch. But that's what the caveat is about.
The natural state of at least human societies is to be religious, and all else being equal, the more turbulent the society, the more religious they will be. If the Fallout United States manages to repress Christianity enough by 2077 for Christianity to not have Christianity dominant, the post-war world, new religions would be created spontaneously by the different people groups of the wasteland.
It also doubles down on the Joshua problem if the United States was supressing Christianity, Mormons are already rsdical traditionalists, if the Mormon church has been resisting eradication by the Government this should galvanize them, and any concessions the Mormon Church to not be eradicated would be in living memory when the bombs fell. When the LDS wakes up to find that the government isn't there to contrain them anymore, they should revert to traditional values and enforce them harshly now that they have the power. Fallout 1's intro shows us a television set that would've fit right at home in a 50's living room. The commercial for the Chryslus is reminiscent of that decade's style. The music pulls from that time. I mean, fuck, man, the wallpaper is an old floral thing you might see in your great-grandmother's house.

Accordingly, why would a 95% Christian country (which it had been for almost two centuries) imagine that the country was going to become radically less Christian and more atheistic? The lack of religion in the series is because its writers are, for better or for worse, California liberals that don't hold religion as very highly important and didn't want to touch it. It's not because of some unseen cultural shift that completely goes against all of the material culture of the series.

That being said, your stuff with the Mormonism does make sense and could be interesting. Weirdly, though, it's more just in line with what the US did to the Mormons in the 50's. There were big scandals around ongoing polygamy in some small communities and the federal government forced the LDS church to denounce them.

Yeah, thats how I play. I use nerd rage and dope up on all kinds of chems. If you're lucky you can get a full set of heavy combat armor from absalom spawning, otherwise you can go to far harbor to get an early marine armor set from either following the main quest, the atom quest, or being a murderhobo.
I've been thinking about doing something different and going to nuka world at level 1 for the quantum PA, since I often don't use PA much at all. Spray and Pray is a great weapon for survival, so is whisperer and most other ballistic uniques. If you use CC stuff, the Prototype Gauss Rifle is worth using and is very very fun.

Doped up on chems is how I play as well, with a refreshing beverage for emergency healing + addiction cures. I grab the power armour from Concord and never come out of it. Its armour allows me to dump endurance and the extra strength allows me to lug around heavy weapons and ammo. The gatling laser is for late game but its super ammo efficient

I'll consider going to Far Harbour early for the marine armour but IIRC it's the heaviest set in the game.

It's the story of his campaign in the game. He winds up having to destroy a vault by self destructing it to destroy the super mutant general Attis and ruin his plot to have super mutants take over the world. The vault Attis took over was the corporate vault under vault tec HQ which contained several different experimental strains of FEV which Attis was playing around with trying to cure super mutant sterility, turning the locals into muties in the process. Although it was for naught since the "cure" Attis developed just mutated him into a horrible cronenberg monster instead of making his nuts work again.

Hm.. It would seem the group, at neither point in their history, has a "kill non-feral ghouls on sight" policy.

As for the residents of Underworld, it always seemed to me that it's supposed to be intentionally ambiguous as to whether they shoot them for:
A. Being Ghouls
B. Being mistaken as Feral Ghouls
C. Being in the middle of the goddamn warzone between the BoS and the Super Mutants

Even if it's A, that then contradicts the evidence of Griffon the "Aqua Cura" merchant. They seem dismissive of him, but they sold him water. My best guess is that it's more likely a mix of B and C with MAYBE some particularly aggressive BoS members going "fuck 'em."

As for 4, they're pretty racist towards Hancock, but they don't outright attack him.

It theoretically could happen with the right circumstances. The only thing stopping the organization from changing at all is the meta factor of "they're the villains of these games and we rely on that to make money." However, the real underlying question is "would it be accurate to their existing ideology?"

Fallout 2 - I don't think so. They hadn't suffered any significant loss to push them away from their existing beliefs. Ones they're pretty committed to at that point. It'd be a radical and sudden change without justifiable cause.
Fallout 3 - The fact that Autumn attempts to coup Eden over the plan to use Project Purity to kill mutants leads to the idea that the Enclave has actually started a process of becoming more moderate already. That being said, I think that Autumn represents the best ideal of the Enclave. Someone who views the Enclave as merely the "hard times" leading to a restored America. The things he does aren't "right", but they are "necessary". I think that breaks with earlier Enclave ideology significantly.

Nate and Nora? I can't think of any evidence in the game to suggest it. Her being a lawyer and him being a veteran means they COULD have some kind of connections, but it just plain seems unlikely. We don't know of any other Enclave operations in the area for them to be part of. Further, if Nate's military service had connected him to the organization, it would've probably kept him away from a suburban life with his wife and more involved in the day to day espionage required by the organization. Even if it just meant he was a bodyguard.

I don't think it'd be a significant difference. Nate is presented as an infantryman and having earned a medal. That does not make him a tactical/strategic genius. Nora is an attorney. Maybe it helps her legislate and adjudicate within her faction, but a BoS chapter isn't a courtroom.

Error in your logic Nick Valentine and X6-88 can also be walked through the Airport. When we know what the BoS thinks of Synths. Bethesda somehow did worse than NV in terms of factions reacting to companions and vice versa.

Hm... Good point, actually. Ignoring the Prydwen entirely, we have a quest where we establish that they want feral ghouls dead. The only other relevant data point I can think of off the cuff. There's that ghoul settlement (Google reminds me it's "the Slog"). Teagan can send you to get supplies from them, iirc. You don't typically do business and trade with people that you kill on sight.

Do you have anything showing that the BoS is outright genocidal to non-feral ghouls? Maxson, for as zealous as he is, also seems deeply practical. Despite his deep disagreements with Lyons, he maintains and expands his recruitment programs. He's also willing to work with a traitor (Dr. Li). So I question why he'd go out of his way to attack people who actually have nothing to do with his given goal.

No I was just pointing out that companions not being treated as hostile by certain factions is just not good evidence.
I was going to say Bethesda is too cowardly to ever have a faction and companion kos each other. But if you bring X6-88 to the now questless railroad, they start blasting, so that would be technically wrong.
Even New Vegas does this, you can knock a guy out to feed him to cannibals, for Ceaser's Legion with Arcade in your party and he doesn't even react.

Caesar doesn't hate the Followers. He even lets them leave the Mormon Fort in peace, if he's alive. Conversely, Arcade has a freak out and goes "Why the FUCK are we here?!?" (You can get influence by going "We're gathering intel, dipshit.") Meanwhile, Boone will just automatically engage, removing your ability to negotiate.

The closest version of this in NV I can think of is actually that the NCR on won't attack Veronica, even if you have her in BoS power armor. That being said, I think that's more just a limitation of "the disguise system only applies to the player."

If you talk Arcade down at the Camp, Ceaser hands you the white glove quest, where you can discover the secret of their cannibalism, and then work with them to ensure their loyalty to Ceaser under false pretenses. Arcade should have a serious issue with the traditionalist white gloves.
I did this all with Arcade behind me, btw, he doesn't react. I am aware New Vegas is relatively good at companions reacting properly to factions, but that is why I chose the word "even."
The point was that Fallout New Vegas is substantially better at this generally, but even they weren't perfect, so we shouldn't be expecting 4 to get it right.
To be honest, I was surprised to learn that the railroad will become hostile if you bring X6-88 to them, but by that point, you will have already failed all their quests.
Preston Garvey only temporarily refuses to work with the player if they are a FUCKING RAIDER.
