The Wheel has turned once again : Dead Again edition

Dominions is a fantasy turn-based war game created by two dudes. One of them is a teacher.
The game combines a simple presentation with an extremely wide array of strategic options, including over 3400 units, 1100 spells and 400 magic items. Turns are resolved simultaneously, with players planning battles rather than directly controlling them. It has simplistic graphics but is easily moddable and extremely deep.
Basically, it's an autist’s wet dream of a war game.

Sorry Ulm you are too late!
I'm claiming the final throne this turn and nobody can stop me!
I'm actually going to win a game playing fuckin Eriu.
I'll save the postgame recap for after next turn with the graphs but GG guys! Get elfed.
Personal thanks to Uruk who was the definitive kingmaker from my perspective. Held on like a sadist against Nidavangr which let me play super greedy early until I had a big enough advantage to just elf my way to the finish line.

>>

Thanks man. I wish every neighbour I had who bordered threat nations stuck it out like you did.
You didn't let me down.
Not splitting you with Nidavangr for free made my game so much easier in the long run. Let me research and site search super hard.
I can see the gem and research graphs already because of the throne of secrets, Ulm had me beat for research by a small margin at the end, but my gem income was immense. Especially after getting well of misery and gates of horn and ivory up.
I could make a wraith lord a turn at the end when my prtender wasn't busy

I ran back as fast as I could but there wasn't really much hope when I'm chaining into my 5th war with both phleg and shinu still halfway alive before they went ai. Such is the life of the honest humble human!
Think I had maybe 3 turns of peace since turn 13 and those three turns were walking over to gank naba, who jammed 800 siege defense in his cap and sat there for like 30 turns

Needed another couple of turns to actually be ready for it, I pearled everything into MR and morale gear and half my shit still couldn't get on top of the forts

GGWP! The phlegra was really good as well!

Yeah I was well prepared for your arrival. All the thrones on your border are loaded with garbage siege strength as well as the fort buffs and veils of deception.
I actually would have won last turn, but the Titan on the crystal throne bone grinded my bishop fish, who promptly ran away from the fight. I had moved my tendy into teleport range just in case any of my throne claimers failed to get on their throne though.
I was a bit worried you would drop those air queens there (not sure if they can reach) and maybe fuck me over at the last second with wrathful skies and I was worried you'd attack before I got my forts all setup.
I was lucky I never had to fight Phlegra, I watched a lot of those battles. The twiceborned tyrants looked nasty.
I didn't have to take a fair fight the whole game though, I got to choose every war. Part of that was noticing Uruk was going to hang on for dear life and scaling up in the meantime. Nidavangr was no pushover, but by the time I elfed him I had a huge research and troop lead on him.
Abysia attacking Oceania was unexpected for me too. I thought he'd backstab Shinu, but attacking Oceania gave me great cover to attack him and setup the throne rush. I had been considering turning on you instead at the time since you were clearly the next biggest threat but I saw the opening in Absyia and taking thrones from you would have been much harder.
GG man.
Behold your new pantokrator sandmen, possibly the first mp win for Eriu in dom 6 (pure speculation).

Twice born tyrants, that fucking bronze statue showing up every 4 turns inside of random forts, 60 ice drakes, the guy played really well and had diverse threats and created chances for himself despite the research disadvantage

The shinu was clearly new but he was throwing AI levels of random mundane troop bullshit at me. I killed probably 30k+ of unsupported troops over 8 turns and he had another 1000 stack of naked bakemono and samurai archers with maybe a wight mage and some hope to support it walking around

Shinu man you gotta have mages to buff these guys and more forts to make those mages and research, you can't just send 15k gold of random 60 unit raiding party bakemonos to their deaths constantly. If you had half as many dai bakemono and that much gold in mage support brought instead it would 10x your armies strength. I cut you in half with 90 men a couple horses and a golem while strangling your friend with the other hand.
Giant strength, flaming arrows, moss body, regen spam, quagmire, soldiers of steel, gotta put something on those dai bakemono or anything with body ethereal and temper flesh will solo thug it.

Even this army I was just going to drop a bunch of earthquakes on and just cut the retreat provinces so the HP rout wipes it, it had realistically no chance of doing anything at all but burning 12 earth gems from someone with 25 income.
If it had tengu and kitsune and sorc thugs protecting its flanks from retreats being cut this would be terrifying but its just some guys waiting to die as is

>TURN 8 OF THE ARENA
Uruk tried the PD dump strategy but it didn't work against. The PD was swiftly cut down and pursuing Vanir quickly surrounded the Annunnaki. They almost all routed, but the last few finished killing the pretender off.
Right afterwards showed up Arco with a proper army. This one was extremely close! Arco went all in on flanking elephants set to attack rear. However, Vanarus still managed to cut through the infantry too fast and reached the commanders on the back first. Vanarus won pretty much on a technicality.
Ys moped up the floor with the few remaining Vanir, who didn't even have a commander left.
But then Jotun arrived with proper numbers. Morvach knights are bullshit, but it was too many giants.
And finally Pythium arrived once again, this time without hydras. A large army, but mostly hastati and slingers without support. Also, a round of applause for Pythium for managing to get its army completely surrounded by an army with almost half the numbers.
>>
>>576758497
For the second half of the game, Na'Ba's capital was the comedy zone. Sensible chuckles were had. He sat on Marignon's capital with an ungodly amount of troops for an extremely long time too. He just needed a couple of fire resist thugs to go in there and kill the big flaming head
I also did donate some gems to phlegra as I did to Uruk just to try and slow you down a bit, from what I can tell those were gems well spent. He was slinging some scary stuff. Always support competent enemies of your enemy. Usually pays off.
From my perspective, my win was fueled by diplomancy and timing. The throne of secrets giving me all the research/gem graphs made my life a lot easier too
If we ever had a fair fight I suspect I would have really had to dig deep to come out on top.
>>

Forgot: turn 8 point goes to Jotunheim.
>TURN 9 OF THE ARENA
Marignon arrives with a classic pikemen and crossbowmen combo, plus a vanguard of penitents blessed with unbearable splendour + death explosion. An interesting choice, at least. Shame he forgot to pack some fire resistance so they all dinamited themselves instantly. The crossbowmen with fire proyectiles did deal some decent damage, but the frontline was ultimately too weak.
Ermor also used a classic strategy, but it worked wonders. The giants were quickly overpowered and cut down by knights and lictors while the giants were busy killing one skeleton after another.
C'tis suffered the same fate. Too small an army, and poison was an unfortunate choice.
Nazca brought a big attack rear strategy and it almost worked, but the birds fell for several decoys at Ermor's rear, and the master lich took too many down with evocations while Ermor's sacreds cut their way straight to Nazca's rear through the flimsy frontline of 40 human warriors. The entire army melted quickly.
And once again Pythium arrived last. Since no hydras didn't work, this time it's mostly hydras. It might have worked against a different opponent, but Ermor's troops didn't give a shit about the hydras and the knights of the sepulchre quickly killed the hastati in the rear and reached Pythium's commander. The lich's fire blasts only sped it all even more.
Point for Ermor!

I didn't quite expect that. 500 skellies and 60 sacreds by turn 9 feels like quite the pace.

Alright just gonna post the important graphs and a brief recap of my perspective of the game.
You can see my build above >>576756969
I didn't put that much thought into it, I just saw that Eriu now had access to Wailing Winds and figured yeah, lets just fear everything so my dogshit troops wont have to do that much fighting. Stygian Skin was just to cover my sacreds arrow weakness, and also to free up a script slot on sidhe lord thugs so they could skip casting barkskin and get more glamor buffs. The paths on a demilich is really nice too. He can project self and spam skeletons, or soul slay or gifts from heaven. He can do wind of death too but I never needed to this game
Expansion went well with fear + stygian obviously. I won a bump against Uruk then settled on borders. Borders formed naturally with Arco on the other side, and my other neighbour was Oceania and I managed to get all of the coastline there.
Uruk bordered both Nidavangr and Na'Ba and I just never want to fight those guys. I let Uruk know I wouldn't vulture him and got to site searching. The only interesting indy recruit I got was bone tribe, which I used to make lots of corpse constructs with the booster items. This was my chaff of choice for most of the game.
Eventually I noticed Ulm was eating Arco and got a little vulturing in. We had an accidental bump at one point that I won thanks to illusions, but we soon after agreed to a NAP so we could both fight scarier nations.
I managed to have 3 thrones at this point too.
>>
File: income.jpg (190 KB, 1896x791)
190 KB JPG
>>576814635
As Uruk was on his legs I elfed Nidavangr. My research and troops numbers by then were just too much, since he had been fighting a grueling war with Uruk for 15 turns or something at that point.
I also asked Abysia to help me take out Nidavangr too, which he did, taking a good chunk of Nida's west. With Nidavangr in turtle mode I just sat on his cap until I could storm and finished him off.
Since Uruk was pretty much depleted too I was able to take all is lands as well as about 2/3s of Nida at the same time. I offered to let Uruk live as a micro state, but he instead chose a valiant last stand.
>>
File: gems.jpg (194 KB, 1893x791)
194 KB JPG
>>576814802
I let things chill for a bit while I caught back up on research and told Abysia I was going to get ready to fight Ulm, who was the other strongest nation on the map then. I was going to do this, but after Abysia turned on Oceania, Oceania contacted me about it.
I only needed 3 more thrones at that point. 1 was still indy on Abysia and my borders, 1 was held by Abysia, and one was just inside Shinuyama territoy on the coastline.
I told Oceania I'd help against Abysia and used that excuse as cover to start rushing for those thrones.
>>
File: research.jpg (180 KB, 1892x791)
180 KB JPG
>>576814991
I had a big lead on Abysia at this point so there wasn't much he could do to stop me, though he did take out a decent amount of my thugs who I hadn't geared for fire resistance since they were rushed in from the Nidavangr war directly.
I got well of pestillence out around then too meaning I had 44 death gems coming a turn which let me start printing Wraith lords and mound fiends. And also gates of horn and ivory letting me make 6 fay knights a turn too.
I took 1 throne from Abysia then rushed for the Shinuyama throne hoping Oceania and Ulm wouldn't catch on to my position quick enough.
>>
File: army.jpg (182 KB, 1890x789)
182 KB JPG
>>576815140
I had 3 thrones on the border with Ulm too, which I had been filling with trash summons for siege defense as well as immaculate walls, iron walls and veils of perpetual mists. Ulm did catch on but not in time, since he was still occupied with Shinuyama and Phlegra.
At the last hurdle the titan on the crystal throne fucking bone grinded my army, including my bishop fish who then ran away, so I had 1 last nervous turn hoping nobody had a teleporting SC ready or a murdering winter to aim at me. But my pretender managed to safely teleport in and end the game.

GG again guys. I think Eriu may deserve a little bit more respect than it currently gets.
>>
>>576815279
Congratulations on your win, anon. I have not heard of Eriu winning in a long time, if ever
>>
>>576770076
Unbearable splendor triggers when someone gets attacked so it's better on units that will hold for a while. I figured you packed that for your knights, and the death explosion for the flagellants.
But ultimately, death explosion without fire resistance = instant self obliteration in a chain reaction.
Your knights might still do decently with the bless, though, specially if you can add some nice survivability buffs. Keep the exploding penitents to use as surprises, or spread them out even more.

>TURN 10 OF THE ARENA
Ind took the chance to go against Ermor, but Ermor retreated in time.
Nidavangr then arrived with force and took the arena...
And started sieging a fort! A giant citadel has suddenly appeared in the arena.

Point for Nidavangr, since he's the one sieging the fort. But let's refresh the forted arena rules:

>It is completely forbidden to fort the arena by any means.
>If by Pankoman's will an event pops a fort right into the arena: anyone sieging the fort counts as controlling the arena and gains the victory point. Conquering the fort grants 5 points (once per player per game). Whoever was granted the fort must lose it before they can conquer it to claim the 5 points.

Half the players in any lobby get wrecked before turn 30. Nobody will notice how bad you are when everybody is bad.
If you can reliably get to 15+ provinces during expansion (pretty easy if your build isn't awful) theres a 99% chance that somebody else in the lobby is way more retarded than you

Turns out it was a big mistake to attack Oceania. It was between them and Shinuyama. Shin was the softer target, but I was worried about Oceania gaining control over most of the water so I thought I would intervene to stop them. They had draconians and foul vapours which were brutal. I thought Ulm would tie you up, but you pivoted and attacked me sooner then I thought, and that was that.
>>
>>576829642
I likely would have pivoted to you even if you had attacked Shinu, just maybe a few turns later which may have made the difference in the throne rush.
After looking at the map though, I realized that if I attacked Ulm I would have to push really deep to take any thrones from him and win, since I had every throne along my border with him already.
Ulm still had a pretty decent amount of troops along our border too and while I could have setup quite a big elfing, it wouldn't be enough to knock him out quickly. I may have been able to beat him in the long run but it would just have taken way longer.
Oceania contacting me about you attacking him was when I realized I can sprint for a win backstabbing you since Ulm was still stuck in a 2v1 that he was winning, but not very quickly.
I wasn't lying when I said I was going to fight Ulm at the time, I just happened to realize afterwards that it wasn't the best idea.
GG, at least my Cu Chulainn hero finally got gibbed on the final turn, he was too cool.

There's a Caer magic site. I think that's just a pre-spawned magic site that spawns a full level fort when sitesearched. But unless Ermor brought in a stealthy pretender with glamour just to sitesearch the arena, I can't see how he'd have managed to find the site at exactly that turn. Guess it was probably an event that triggers that site, after all.
Either way it must be unlikely as fuck. I wrote that bit of rules for shits and giggles, but I didn't expect it'd actually happen.

I'm not sure when in the turn order do forts get repaired, but since siege damage happens long after battles are finished, it'd make sense that one sieging army being replaced by another doesn't leave any time for the fort to get repaired. So there will probably be a shitload of pressure in a few turns to capture that fort for those extra points. And to always keep the fort locked down under siege so whoever is currently inside can't tear it apart before you can score too.

>>576832080
Thats a throne province right? Mages are to be expected on throne provinces.
What you do is you get a scout or a cheap commander to attack the province solo, but you script him to retreat. That way you can see exactly what mages you need to deal with and their gems and gear.
Generally elemental mages with gems, will summon elementals.

>>
>>576834021
The lion's actually a popular pick around lucid's community. Dubbed the cruncat, you take an F1N2 lion and have it expand against most anything with p. regen while being so cheap you get to be a scales nation too. You don't get any bless, but the nations who take this probably have cruddy sacreds in the first place to be needing the expander.

EA: Pangaea, Ulm, Rus, Niefelheim, Muspelheim
MA: Pangaea, Man, Ulm, Marignon, Nidavangr
LA: Pangaea, Man, Ulm, Ragha, Zemaitia

Probably the most straight forward nations above, they all tend to have just Get army of good units > buff units > throw them at enemy.

Most strategy comes from what you need to win games like Rus would be use skinshifters get a good early game and survive to get big spells for their Daughters/Sons/Perkunus with a good spread of offensive magic, and then you summon Zmeys forever.

Most nations have something like this to a path to victory, and then skill expression comes from who you're fighting and how do you counter them and how they are countering you.

You also have the option of trying to destroy it before anyone else takes it, and you can make stronger PD.

>TURN 11 OF THE ARENA
That was a full one! Ulm obliterated Nida with a quick attack rear and pincer.
Arco arrived with another herd of elephants, which beelined to Ulm's rear and trampled half of the black knights. But then they routed, and the rest of the army routed with them. A bit more morale might have resulted in an Arco victory. Or maybe not, those other black knights were going straight for the commanders.
Ashdod didn't do anything fancy, just a standard big line. The black knights broke through and started killing the archers at the back - but there were too few ulmites left and soon they were forced to rout. Pure numbers victory.
Nazca did once again the full attack rear strategy. The giants were unimpressed.
Pythium then beat Ashdod through sheer numbers, but at a high cost. Too many hydras died, and too many gladiators called it a day...
Leaving them at half strength when Ermor arrived with a fresh horde. Knights of the sepulchre quickly killed the slingers while the rest of the skeletons laughed at all the piercing attacks.
Pretty impressive numbers for Ermor, though. Minimal loses.

Point for Ermor!

Giants with an enlarge+regeneration bless are Baby's First Oonga Boonga, but any nation with a 20+ protection troop type will also expand with minimal losses against most indie types. Heavy cavalry is especially valuable. The worst thing you can do in this game is fuck up expansion and set yourself up as a submissive and breedable neighbor, and noobs usually suck at expanding with shitty human troops because you need to know what beats what indie type and at what ratio so that you avoid attrition, which mostly comes down to fucking up a bunch in (preferably) single player games. Also if you just watch at least the start of a game on YouTube for a nation you're first-timing it'll get you far.

Buy more scouts, I won't patrol every turn any more and only return to defend the citadel when it seems like I need to stop it from being captured so people can actually watch the fights again. Too bad there's no way to mod in a terrain to be visible at all times

Unfortunately no. Certain mods lower the weight of grief spells or at least tightens their conditions to cast them (not a modder so not certain). Sloops does a good job for example it reduces the suicidal urge of astral mages to cast blink into the backline

Already shoving some new ones in. As soon as I get some scrying spells researched I'll throw them in too.

>>577181530
Be happy, it used to be worse. Astral mages used to love casting Blink until they teleported right into melee and got killed.
There was nothing more dangerous to astral mages than swiftly defeated, routing enemies. They'd go straight off script and still have plenty of energy left to chaincast Blink until they got themselves killed.
Also, sometimes you'd avoid researching some paths. If a mage could cast web arrow, there was a big chance that'd be the only thing he'd be casting. Some nations needed carefully picked research goals, because going for a higher level spell meant sacrificing a lot of firepower if you hit one of those crappy spells mages loved.
Great times

The game creators openly admit they do not care about multiplayer game balance and prefer to do what they want to do, which is fine, and they encourage modding as well, which is also fine

>>577191291
If anything being able to micromanage spell lists seems like it would be better for singleplayer than multiplayer because it's another axis for sweats to minmax
>>
>>577191005
It's pretty moddable. Like the other anon said I'd prefer a pool of spells like in CoE for them to choose from or a focus on buffing/evocation/disabling enemies etc
>>
>>577191484
The fact that you say "it's moddable" and not "there's a mod that lets you do that" suggests it's not moddable enough
>>
>>577191291
>The game creators openly admit they do not care about multiplayer game balance
They care a little bit, enough to at least ask the sweaters for suggestions sometimes. You're right it isn't their main focus or goal though.
Dominions is a rare type of game where imbalance actually balances itself out in mp.
At least amongst knowledgeable players the strongest nations tend to get the heaviest diplomatic debuffs.
Like your Ubars, Nazcas etc all tend to get ganged up on early in games. The shittier nations can fly under the radar and get strong if they survive the first wars

Well the thing is, with focusable spells it might make S tier nations SSSSS tier, so it can have bad effects. The randomness appeals to some people as well, so you'll make some upset to lose it. When those things are considered it makes sense to do no work instead

>They care a little bit, enough to at least ask the sweaters for suggestions sometimes. You're right it isn't their main focus or goal though.
Yes, this is true and fair. I was being a bit rough in my statement, they do care, but that is not their main focus, as you say.
>>
>>577193108
A lot of good spells a mage wont cast offscript because his fatigue will be too high by then.
Namely big aoe evos/buffs. Mages also love summoning shit because they keep track of your armies total hp and try to compensate it so if they can cast raise dead or ghost wolves they probably will
>>
>>577193108
Probably something like frozen heart, stopping them from casting horde of skeletons over and over versus a thug that instantly kills them and instead going for ghost grip.

Well it doesnt cast for small numbers of enemies so maybe the first cast(s) of master enslave took enough it wouldnt cast again, or maybe you ran out of gems or maybe slaves died. Without the exact battle it's hard to say what caused it. It seems you're doing everything properly though so it should work next time.

all the more reason to implement it then, if the developers aren't worried about multiplayer balance. the tier list of nations only matters FOR multiplayer.

>The randomness appeals to some people as well, so you'll make some upset to lose it.

Adding in a second way of controlling your casters past the generic "Cast spells" option doesn't remove their ability to just let the mages be random. In fact, it gives the devs an out from having to improve the AI further while still letting those who want more control to have it
