Sorry but I was busy working all week and I didn't want to make a new thread if I wouldn't have time to post in it.
Anyway, now that there's some other thread calling itself /hlgg/ and polluting >>>/vg/lgg search results, should we replace /lgg/ with /glgg/ in future thread titles so that we can bookmark >>>/vg/glgg instead? I kinda hate it but whatever. We've already been including GNU in the long-form title of most threads. I put both abbreviations in this thread's subject line.

Moonlighter is 100% off (to promote the sequel) until Sunday 1:00 pm Steam time.
https://store.steampowered.com/app/606150/Moonlighter/
I never played it before, so I don't know if it's good. Reviews are mostly positive.
There's a native Linux build. Of course that means there are ProtonDB comments recommending Proton instead, but the only specific complaints about the Linux build I can see are related to launching the game and controller support, and I can't corroborate those claims. It launched for me, and my Xbox 360 controller seems to be working...
>>
>>576761497
>Sunday 1:00 pm Steam time
Sorry, I think Steam is actually showing that deadline in my own local time (Eastern US). I'm pretty sure I've seen Steam display sale start/end times in the California timezone before, but there's no timezone on that giveaway end time. In any case it has just under 42 hours left.
By the way, I do see one issue, which possibly has nothing to do with the version I'm running: it stretches to fullscreen without preserving aspect ratio. (The previous post had a window screenshot.) Ironically the current resolution option in the game settings claims to be "pixel perfect", but I guess that just refers to the scaling factor it applies to the raw graphics before it ruins everything by stretching vertically.
Also the game's detection of analog trigger presses seems a bit fucky, and maybe that's an issue with the Linux version specifically. The controller input is detected in general though.

Cute game.
There are also bonus levels.
The first two are horror themed, the third gives hints to the locations of hidden items and contains an infinite-jumps upgrade unlocked by getting those items, and the last bonus level is Christmas-themed. I played the first three already, before going back and finishing the last non-bonus level again for these screenshots. I'll leave the Christmas level for Christmas.

pirated the korean genshin game, but an earlier build so it doesn't have the ice girls bikini, will re-download for that. on my first boot the game froze at the menu if i did any input on keyboard/controller so i waited for 5 minutes, the menus were laggy and i was eventually able to start a new game by mashing 'a' on my controller and the game ran perfectly fine. must've been compiling shaders in the background in the menu. after a reboot no more stutter so there couldve been another process that was fucking me over just lingering.

to the anon who told me to just use proton-cachyos to fix my memory leak, I mean I knew that wouldn't fix Overwatch in Lutris but ProtonDB did help.
People kept saying to use all sorts of launch commands but the one that stuck out the most was
DXVK_CONFIG="dxvk.trackPipelineLifetime = True"
What they don't tell you is that on Lutris, you remove the " " from the value. Most of these people were using Steam. So yeah if you find a fix on ProtonDB similar to the above, remove the " " on Lutris.

BTW I had to run chkdsk on an old NTSC hard drive, so I went to my brother's and used his winslop 11 machine. Somehow the desktop and mouse felt so much more responsive than both on my KDE Wayland desktop and my X11 cinnamon session.
I would never ever go back to winshit and this is in no way trying to start a Linux v wintrash flamewars, but what could possibly be the reason for the decrease in responsiveness? It might just be something wrong with my setup.
The refresh rates were both 120 Hz so it wasn't that at least.

For the anon(s) that asked about beast of reincarnation. Yes, you can set the Engine.ini file to read-only to prevent the game from overwriting your changes. That's the method mod sites say you should do it.
The performance in the game is similar to black myth wukong. On my rx 7800 xt at 4k and everything maxed, including ray casting (and no upscaling) I get around 38 fps. Ray casting option doesn't really affect fps so thats nice. But the game looks like shit with everything maxed, to make it look better you have to set post processing to low and disable depth of field, which gives me 42 fps. With fsr 3 quality option I get around 60 fps. The game has no fsr 4 option, but I believe on linux it automatically upgrades to fsr 4 right? (wintoddlers BTFO!).
>>
>>576819956
To show how bad the bad looks like without setting post processing to low and disabling depth of field, look at this. This is with post processing set to very high and depth of field enabled
>>
>>576820161
and here is the same scene with post processing set to low and depth of field disabled (compare the images at full 4k resolution to view it properly)
>>
>>576819723
>but why shouldn't he turn off something he isn't using?
Because it creates problems? Because it makes desktop environments to rearrange shit and might cause failures either in display server or video driver? There's a reason why Nvidia driver doesn't disable screen in driver even if it being physically disabled. This is especially problem for Windows and X11 applications because these love window positioning and video mode switching so unless developer explicitly handled it in code.

>1. Why are you turning off secondary monitor while gaming?

>>
>>576829962
Is this expansion even compatible with open source Quake engines?
>>
>>576830127
I don't know. The previous one (Dimension of the Machine) worked, although I think Quakespasm had to be updated for it (so the new expansion might not be supported right away). With a sufficiently up-to-date Quakespasm build (which even Linux Mint had as of last year), it just required copying an extra file into he Quakespasm directory. I actually found my old posts about this with a filename search on the archive:
https://arch.b4k.dev/vg/thread/524917039/#525653463
https://arch.b4k.dev/vg/thread/524917039/#525655147
The new expansion might just work if it's built using only the same tech as the previous one. But I haven't looked into it.

I don't remember what difficulty this is, but probably the easiest, because I think the others start out locked and I never have the patience for multiple consecutive runs through this game. It has no Steam Cloud support and I wasn't always smart enough to back up my saves.
Is it true that the dynamic difficulty is broken? Or is that just because people quick-load every time they fuck up? There's some difficulty fix on PCGW and I wonder if it's worth doing.

Huh... okay. What PCGW provides is actually a difficulty.txt inside of a data/ folder, and apparently Max Payne loads shit from data/ automatically. If this is a documented feature of the game then I never heard of it, but I guess I never looked for it either. Is this how other mods work?

Having a breeding table open on a 2nd monitor comes in handy for Palworld. Also, btop to monitor temps, ram, and cpu usage. For JRPGs especially old ones I would open up a walkthrough just in case I run into something that gets me stuck. Yes, this is a form of cheating. No, I don't care.

I might have autism.
At least I did the cropping in bulk with ImageMagick.
And to Cartridges' credit, it doesn't stretch images unless they are very close to 2:3 (and otherwise it pads them). But even if I can't see it, I still know.
Heroic devs would have me just import all of my games into Heroic, instead of using Cartridges as my top-level "everything" launcher, but I do appreciate the simplicity of Cartridges so I don't think I'll stop until there's a Linux port of Playnite to tempt me away from the righteous path of minimalism back to the dark side of spending all day customizing/organizing shit.

Shitty RPG maker would totally make generic rpg-maker related files in user folders which would make it easy to find using recursive search
>>
>>576960402
I'm not familiar with `fd` but yeah, I should have guessed it was a recursive search, and so yeah, it could work... if the game names its save files and other such things sanely. But if the game's developer was uncivilized enough to put configuration and save data in the registry, then a filename search will not help, assuming that's what your command is doing. And of course the developer could write to normal files on disk and still name things stupidly.
(This isn't entirely related, but even Steam game's install folders under ~/.steam/root/steamapps/common/ sometimes have weird names. For example, Fahrenheit: Indigo Prophecy Remastered installs to ~/.steam/root/steamapps/common/Kelvin/.)
If the other guy really cares, he could also look at PC Gaming Wiki to see where the game in question puts its save files, and then check each prefix for that exact file path.

Advice/recommendations please. I want to keep Windows 8.1 because I have a lot of Windows only programs and files, including standalone gog games launchers. I namely want Linux to play Steam and use a web browser, and switch between OS' for my needs.
>>
>>577070893
>I want to keep Windows 8.1 because I have a lot of Windows only programs and files
You know we can run Windows shit with Wine/Proton right? And from the looks of it since you're running old as Windows shit it's unlikely you will encrouter some compatibility issues.
For start if you don't want to read a lot of shit I recommend asking Deepseek your questions mentioning your hardware and goals.

I mean I'd like to keep 8.1 even if it was just for sentimentality.

Burn Mint iso on a USB stick (there's guide on their site), it will offer to format the drive during installation - just don't accidentally format your windows drive. There should be an option to install alongside existing windows, so the dual-boot should be set up automatically.
While you can access your windows files from linux, it's better to install games on linux partition.
>>
>>577071465
1. If you're somehow one of those twitter artists that think AI can still be stopped, Deepseek is the AI you have the least ability to stop, China does not care about your tears.
2. Questions that have been asked to death but you're too special to RTFM are basically the ideal use case for LLMs and none of the boogeymen applied to AI applies. There's no art being "stolen", there's nobody being put out of business (you're not paying /vg/ to spoonfeed you lmao), you're not going to brick your computer following the advice of "yes, Linux mint is for noobs".
Frankly I can't imagine someone having nostalgia for 8.1, and you already have worse compatibility with modern windows programs than Proton. You might just need to get your shit together.

I know it's hard to post on the internet without absurd hyperbole, but it's ACKCHYUALLY two layers, Cartridges being the minimalist top layer over a more complicated layer consisting of Steam, Heroic, and itch app (which aren't separate layers because they don't overlap). If I launch a Steam game through Cartridges, precisely two launchers are involved.
And in contrast to Playnite in which every game has a text box for every kind of metadata you could possibly imagine using to categorize a game, Cartridges has
>box art
>title
>developer (I don't know why they added this)
hence the comment about minimalism. It's basically like launching games from the application menu but prettier.
>>
>GOG announcing that games have now been preserved forever because they tested them for Windows 11 compatibility
If they really want to make an impact on game preservation then they should find a way to promote development of source ports and decompilations or whatever we call the ports not based on official source.
>>
>>577070893
>but apparently I still should partition?
Are you talking about the partition layout Linux tends to use? Such as parition for /, /home, the bootloader, etc?
>>
>>577075415
>Just select windows on your bios
So instead using single bootloader I now have to enter boot menu each time I want to dual boot? Perfect!
>>
>>577121821
Don't worry, there's ways to get grub to detect Windows after the installation if a Windows drive isn't installed at the time. Though I don't think I unplugged my drives when I installed Linux on a PC with Windows. Linux shouldn't nuke Windows bootloader like Windows will nuke the Linux bootloader even if it's on another drive. There you do need to unplug your Linux drives. But it's been a while since I done that.
>>
>>577070893
>partitioning
Your SSD needs a partition table to hold partitions, then you format those partitions with filesystem's to hold your data. You just need a boot partition (/boot) and a root partition (/), the GUI installer of any distros will make it easy for you. What specs are on your old PC? Something Ivy Bridge or Haswell?
>>577123589
When you're installing Linux then Windows for the first time yes you need to do it in reverse (Windows first then Linux), and make sure you have legacy boot disabled too if you have Sandy Bridge/AMD FX or newer. Modern Windows monthly updates (every patch Tuesday) would overwrite Linux's bootloader on legacy boot/MBR installs, on UEFI after those updates Windows just moves itself to the top of the bootloader selection without destroying GRUB, rEFInd etc.

Hot take: ProtonDB is bad PR.
Not only are the ratings often based on significantly outdated reports, but the rating system is also fundamentally broken, because the stated definitions of Bronze/Silver/Gold/Platinum are incompatible with the way they are computed, which appears to be "take the percentage of thumbs-up reports and pick a rating accordingly". Mouse over Gold and it says "runs perfectly after tweaks" but the rating regularly gets applied to games that require no tweaks because in practice it means "most reports are thumbs-up". And who knows that the fuck a good percentage of thumbs-up reports even means? It could been the game just works but was not working on a previous Proton version. It could mean some reports incorrectly identified an intrinsic quality of the game as a compatibility issue. Or it could be that the game has real issues but some users don't care. Last I checked, the thumbs-up was based on some question like
>Was it an overall good experience?
which is subjective but of course people will interpret thumbs-up as "works perfectly", hence the
>Game crashes sometimes and performance is bad.
>Platinum!
memes on /v/ which are wrong only in that individual reports don't directly assign medal ratings anymore.
People will say that ProtonDB is a necessity because fixes are documented there, but those fixes should have been documented on PCGW anyway.
Didn't even read that whole post btw. But it has a ProtonDB main page screenshot so I already know what it says. The ProtonDB statistics make Linux look bad because outdated reports are not ignored early enough if at all.
It's fine. I'm only slightly mad.

The usual answer I get, though, when I ask why I'm being called a retard for using X11, is that it's specifically bad for multiple monitors *with different refresh rates*, maybe also a common setup but not one that I've ever had, not even when I had that dual-monitor setup that I ditched because the second monitor was useless 99% of the time because I don't need to distract myself from the games I'm playing.

thats a lot of cope

No. Problem is the same even on monitors with same refresh rate since it's originates from Xorg inability to synchronize render to all screens. That means if frame synchronized to one monitor it most likely will be skipped on the other since even if two monitors have same refresh rates it doesn't mean they will be synchronized at the exact same time.

That because you were using xwayland and frame callbacks are Wayland thing. If you'll use Wine Wayland driver you'll experience this.

No, running games natively in Wayland is beneficial than running them in XWayland, especially on NVIDIA where is XWayland causes significant input lag. Throttled rendering for occluded apps is GNOME shit, no other Wayland compositor have this (well, except for Weston maybe)

do you really think the avegare person cares or go out of their way to run games natively on wayland? do you know where we are?

/g/ hates gnome because it isn't what valve is using, that's the whole reason for the hate.
use whatever you want and what you find better, it is your Personal Computer, don't let jews dictate what you have to use, otherwise it would just be windows/mac lite

Most sdl3 (and sdl2 games with sdl2-compat) are already Wayland native, and eventually Wine Wayland driver will be made default

I don't know why but every ai vibesloped project ending up using X11. Does AI have some preference to X11 than Wayland?

same but it's because of the heat and having a bad stomach ache
>>
>>577279207
Yep, it's because in the xorg server there is only one framebuffer that is shared across all monitors, for whatever reason. There is technically no reason why it cant just be split to one framebuffer per monitor, even on x11; since thats how it behaves with xwayland which is just another backend for xorg server.

What I did was shrink Windows (the C: drive) to the smallest possible size and the rest I gave to Linux. I don't know how many partitions Windows created for 8.1 but it should be 4 partitions.
>EFI System
>Microsoft reserved
>Microsoft Basic Data (C: drive)
>Windows Recovery Environment
Shrink the Microsoft Basic Data partition. Don't format it, and just install whatever Linux you want to that new partition. You can manually partition that new space to include /boot, swap, and /, or you can let the installer do it for you. Just don't touch the Windows system partitions. Good luck.

Ah. But yeah you'll need partitions. If you let the installer do it for you you don't really need to worry. It might put everything under / (known as root) anyway. Then probably a swap and a boot partition.
