So, remembering "Underswap". The original concept of it was very easy to follow. Conveniently, major characters in Undertale consistently came in pairs, so just reversing these pairs was a simple concept anyone could understand, and that would usually make sense. (Except for the fact that in the original flavor Asriel is swapped with Monster Kid of all people. What? How do you fumble the Asriel+Chara set? It's so hard to imagine these days...) As such it basically became the default version of the broader genre of "swap AUs".However. To my knowledge, Deltarune has no such obvious "default" swap AU. A couple reasons can be identified for this that have likely been working in concert:In the Chapter 1 days, when there was higher demand for applying Undertale-style AUs to Deltarune, we did not have enough characters to work with, and things that seemed obvious with the limited information we had then just seem really silly now. (This continued through Chapter 2 as well (as an example, switching Spamton and Jevil was very popular back then, but it doesn't make so much sense now), but I think most of the really illogical-seeming post-3+4 swap AUs I've heard of were either purposefully just doing whatever with it or desperately trying not to go back and change their Chapter 2 era concept to account for new information)Even with the passage of time, most Deltarune characters are not as obviously put into clean self-contained pairs like Undertale's cast was. Like really, the usual main party is an ODD NUMBER OF CHARACTERS! (...I mean, there's Noelle, but she's not there all the time! And if we're talking 2018 we had no idea she'd be in the party at all!)But, we have most of the game now, and presumably most of its characters. If we try to shed any preconceived notions from the past, what would be the "most obvious" pairs to make in a simple Underswap-style AU?
I am really enjoying writing. I don't know why I didn't start writing fanfiction earlier. I'll stop posting about it now. I'm just surprised. I expected it to be more unpleasant.
