The game you’re thinking of is known as Soku. But no, my system is not actually based on Touhou. I’m not really a huge fan of Soku or even Immaterial and Missing Power (the old version of the game where there is no weather effect) because there is no timer at all. So it has that problem Smash Bros has where matches can potentially go on for a very long time and keepaway just means putting the opponent through an endurance test. Rather, it’s based more on Arcana effects and Virtua Fighter stages. You know how there’s the Wind Arcana that gives you another airdash and another jump? Or how there’s the Water Arcana that nullifies chip damage? I basically wanted to have something like that, but a bit more toned down instead of some ridiculous crazy effect on every stage. As such, there are also normal stages.As for the Virtua Fighter part, you know how some stages are much bigger, while others are smaller and closed in so you can get wall combos much faster? I have that, but again, toned down a bit. There are three classes of stage. Large, medium, and small. A medium stage is about 2 screen lengths long. (Similar to a game like Granblue Fantasy Versus or Nitroplus Blasterz.) A large stage is about 2.5 screen lengths long. (Similar to Street Fighter 5, though a little shorter than that.) A small stage is about 1.5 screen lengths long. (Similar to Melty Blood, though a bit longer than that.) I didn’t want to have ridiculously big stages where you can play keepaway all day, but I wanted it to be noticeably bigger than some other stages, which is why those stages are not simply infinite like some Tekken stages are, as that has its own set of issues.If you’re curious, here is a list of some of the stage concepts I have so far.https://controlc.com/fy3hwtysI actually have a lot more concepts, some being much more ridiculous on purpose, more as “party stages” rather than seriously balanced ones. I like the concept of giving Olga another command throw, but I’m concerned she could become overtuned if she has too many tools. This is actually an issue in a lot of doujin fighting games (and especially in indie fighting games made in the west) where grapplers accidentally end up far too powerful and not fun to fight against at all. Bravo is actually a top tier in Chaos Code, which I think is at least partly due to the fact that he has good anti-airs. A lot of Chaos Code characters have rather weak anti-airs, but he can land one and get okizeme or just big damage if he wants to. This is why I gated a lot of her really powerful tools behind meter. Of course, a lot of the grapplers I like, such as Ethica from Nitroplus Blasterz, Tamaki from Aquapazza, and Rainbow Mika from Street Fighter 5 have multiple command throw specials, so I will consider it.What’s interesting is that Olga’s 6C normal throw, Juicing the Lemon, basically does what you suggested for the HCB. Though it looks a bit more like Hakan’s command throw than anything Hugo does. It’s not like the standard normal throw in this game. Rather than providing a hard knockdown, it’s a launcher that can send the opponent flying towards the corner. She can even combo off of it mid-screen if she spend a bar, which is unique to her. With that said, I like your name suggestions, but most of the ones I use for her tend to have a Hungarian theme to them or are more specific cooking/restaurant terms. The beef puns are clever, but they may seem a bit out of place in this setting since that would be like humans calling themselves meat. Perhaps I’m overthinking it, but that’s just a thing I spent a lot of time writing out with how their world works. There are “higher” animals and “lower” animals that are basically a separate species, so Olga doesn’t view herself as similar to common cattle. She’s a bison person, but that’s quite different from a bison you see walking around in the forest.

I could probably do that with just a few frames, you’re right, but it feels like something I couldn’t easily reuse. A lot of these moves heavily reuse animation. On the level of something like Akatsuki Blitzkampf where Akatsuki’s j.C keyframe is reused during his Tatsu in order to save time/money. So I usually think in terms of “How can I have this move completed in 10 frames or less.” Which is why her standard command throw is putting you in a pot and stirring it up. This probably sounds strange, but a lot of the moves in this game are actually pretty “low fantasy” in the sense that they’re very simple. The animation you suggested is actually a bit similar to how Gwen’s command throw works, though a bit more flashy. Gwen’s throw is just her grabbing you with her off-hand, then brutally smashing the axe into you as she leans over with all the force of her back. It’s a very simple and effective way of showing that she is trying to smash their body apart. There are a few spins and more complex motions in some cases, but usually, they’re still animated pretty simply since I want moves to feel very snappy and responsive. This is the same reason that supers are typically 3 seconds or less.Another thing about Olga’s normal throw is that she can combo into it, which is something only she can do. But I may end up reworking that if it becomes cumbersome in a game with 1 button throws. But if it’s not an issue on the coding side, likely am keeping it like that. It’s made to be the opposite of Gwen, who can get a full combo off of her normal throw. So Gwen can combo out of her throw while Olga can combo into her throw.An important thing to note about the combo system in this game is that wall bounces aren’t really a common thing.

You can knock someone down and them force them into a bad situation pretty easily, but then the opponent can try to get out of that situation if they’re willing to spend some resources or make a good read. I guess that sounds pretty basic, but that’s the general idea. I didn’t want to load on too many superfluous mechanics, so I got rid of things like the Supreme Guard mechanic, which would make defense too complex. So the primary defensive tool is Shield Bash, which is basically a guard cancel mechanic. Offense is fairly straightforward as well, with the offensive/defensive tool, Extra Roll, being similar to Focus Attack Dash Cancel in SF4 or Roman Cancel in GGXX, though with a high cost attached so it doesn’t become overly centralizing or the default best option. I have a big problem with a lot of newer fighting games, so Blades and Beasts aims to avoid those things. Over centralizing universal mechanics.
Huge combos off of any random hit without much investment. Long cutscene supers that break the pace of the match. Cumbersome autocombos that get in the way of existing moves anyway. Extremely strong comeback mechanics that go against the concept of the better player snowballing and being rewarded for playing well. Overly strong defensive tools that make the game feel far too safe in any given situation. I’m trying to avoid things like that. I’m also trying to heavily limit option selects to keep options meaningful and committal, but that’s a thing I’ll have to tinker with in the future. Most of what you do is use your normals to control space, then once you land a hit, you can choose between damage or a knockdown. Every character can do some variation of this, but with their own spin on it. Or they will sometimes just focus on another thing they’re good at, but they probably can still knock you down and force aggression. A good example of this is the character Mamiko. She is designed as a zoner with charge inputs, similar to Guile or Ash Crimson. But because she has access to summons with a high potential for damage, okizeme, pressure, and approach, she can just go in and kill if she wants to anyway. Amina is a character that can just approach you on the ground if she wants, but she also has an 8 way airdash, so she can jump in the air and bait attacks from different angles. Or she can just attack at a strange angle using her airdash like a fast fall, then attack after confusing you. Since anti-airs are designed to be very strong in this game, however, Amina players will still need to understand the ground approach. Gwen players can just use super armor to force an approach, then spend more resources to stay in against the opponent. But she can also just ignore playing like a grappler and do basic rushdown techniques if you prefer.

Maybe I could tell you a bit about the systems I'm making. GigaMaidens is a four button fighting 3D game with meters and specials and supers. It has 8-way run but no guard button, you hold back to block. Which may cause problems but that's where I'm going so far. The buttons are Punch, Kick, Armament (AKA Arms, as in, the character's weapon) and Thaumatics (AKA Special) Gravity is moon-like so there's high jumps and aircombos and stuff. All special moves cost an increasing amount of meter to perform, however the first stock of meter replenishes itself. You get different moves by doing motion inputs faster and they all have unique uses. Contrary to not having cinmeatic supers, GigaMaidens does have them, but they are once-per-match supremely damaging moves that grow the attacker to the size of the planet, and they all have a minigame element. If the attack whiffs or the minigame is failed you cannot attempt it again.In any case, I drew you a picture - picrel. I wish you the best of luck! I've played a bit of avatar. I don't know anything about the show, so the characters aren't really that appealing. I don't really want to play as a little kid, and I also don't really want to play as an old guy who beats up little kids, so I went with zuko. I guess he's like a tragic backstory guy. that's cool.
