>Thread Question
what's your opinion on orientalism in video games?
>>
>>577029267
Orientalism is the only reason that oriental cultures are preserved and remembered.
>>
>Call of the Wild doesn't add Cavalier
Fug.

I wonder how long until someone just rebuilds Kingmaker in WotR's engine with AI.
>>
>>577029335
there's no such thing as a "oriental" culture

Anything east of Suez is Oriental.

You can't die with dignity. You literally shit and piss yourself and then you smell. What a fucking meme

How do I start this quest? I talked to everyone I could find..
>>
I don’t need to see everything that upsets you on your twitter and reddit feeds
>>
>>577029771
We're talking about abstract concepts like culture and identity not human bodies
You sound spiritually american also
>>
>>577029891
Literally go to the Officer's Deck
From the bridge, go to the exit doorway at the end, and choose Officer's Deck as your destination
>>
>>577029891
Have you tried thinking about anything for yourself?
>>
>>577029267
Edward Said was an utter faggot for vilifying the concept of “orientalism” and quote unquote “exoticism”. Only Americans take him seriously now, because the rest of the world realized how utterly dumbfounded his thesis was.
>>
>>577030027
>>577030080
I didn't consider a new area to pop up.
>>
>>577029959
You can't die with dignity. That goes for everything. A culture that dies gets perverted into an unrecognizeable mess by people who are alien to it either for malicious reasons, or out of simple ignorance. There's no dignity in that
>>
>>577029891
Uhoh
Passfag is going to scissor Kibellah
>>
>>577029959
You'd think you'd be able to extrapolate that example onto more abstract phenomena, but no, apparently that's too hard for you. Talk about being spiritually american.
>>
>>577030119
I also struggled with this
In my last playthrough I couldn't remember what I had to do, so I triggered the scene manually and it played out very strangely on the bridge
>>
It’s amazing how some faggots latch on to visible posters like leeches, begging for an ounce of their cum.
>>
How do I attack?
Should I attack?
When will I attack?
What is a roll?

>>577031718
I thought His spirit was the fusion of 10 shaman kings or something
>>
>>577031835
True, but that fusion emerged as a baby born in Anatolia.
Catal Hukuk to be exact. The very first city in the world, where they practiced ancestor worship. They would decorate the skulls of the ancestors and mount them in the living quaters.
That's why the Imperium uses skulls so much.
>>
Would a swashbuckler be a fun option for playing through Baldur's Gate 1 and 2 for the first time?
The class fantasy really appeals to me and from what little I played before backstabbing is somewhat tedious anyway.
>>
>>577031835
>>577031443
In real life, Catal Hukuk was a very egalitarian place. No archaeological evidence of a hierarchy.
As the story goes, the emperor's uncle killed the emperor's father, because he wanted to marry the emperor's mother. That's why the emperor is holding his father's skull in that image.
There was nothing that could be done, because there was no overarching authority. So he killed his uncle using his psyker powers, and decide that from now on there would be an overlord in Catal Huyuk - himself.
Thus the emperor was the first man to discover law and order.
>>
>>577032004
yeah if you dont care about backstabbing its perfectly fine to carry you through the games
fighter/thief is probably technically stronger but its not really necessary, so feel free to just go swashbuckler and call it a day
if you don't care about race go half orc and start with 19 str to steam roll the early game

>Your doppelganger resolutely clutches {his|her} fist around an oddly shaped wraithbone talisman. The Aeldari wear such amulets as a token of special bond with someone... Or a token of remembrance for the deceased."
>Her emerald-green eyes light up with surprise, sorrow, and confusion all at once. "So you and I walked arm in arm in this other world too, elantach. And since the keepsake is now in your possession... my Path was cut short before yours."
>Your alter ego nods, slowly and ruefully. "Forgive me, Yrliet Lanaevyss. You took the Kabal Dragon's blow that was meant for me, but the medicae were unable to heal your wounds. Still... it is a great joy to see you alive again."

>>
>>577044231
It’s simple. Women are social creatures that thrive in social settings where they can be seen. They likewise crave approval from their peers and seek out such venues with ease as praise is easy to access from nerds. The internet is not one such place and it is only there where true statistics show themselves, as anonymity provide the most crucial statistical information.

>>577044231
>>577046390
something people don't wanna admit is that women just aren't that interested in video games as a whole and trying to force them to like games hasn't really budged any stats over the last 30 years with the exception being mobile games. Even BG3 that people like to celebrate as a game with a lot of women, stats are around 90% guys playing warrior/paladin human romancing Shart or Lae'zel.
>>
>>577047339
>or Lae'zel.
Actually Karlach was the second most popular female LI. Lae'zel third and Minthara a distant fourth.
>>
>>577047478
I have never taken Karlach and I never will. She wasn’t implemented in EA so all you could do was kill her or let her go. So I just got used to killing her. No idea who she is as a person.

>>577047652
The cope when the stats released was hilarious. Making shit up like Shadowheart's overwhelming popularity was because she's attractive to lesbians because they can't seem to accept the fact that majority of players are just typical straight men who went for the cute half elf chick.

Popularity plays zero role in loving a waifu. It doesn't matter if other people like her too, all that matters is how much YOU like her.

It's as that old meme goes:
If Galfrey has a million fans, I am one of them.
If Galfrey has one fan, it is I.
If Galfrey has zero fans, it means I have perished.

Sometimes I like the popular waifu, like Beniko and Kibbelah. Other times, I like the contrarian choice, like Minthara and Galfrey. It doesn't matter at all.

The image of elves that people default to when they hear the term? Ethereally beautiful, graceful, wise, long-lived? Yes, we owe that to LotR. My point was that you shouldn't exploit a term with a longstanding convention. If you want to create a fictional race that will obviously map onto "space elves" in the player's mind, that's fine. Call them something totally not Tolkeniesque, like "aeldari" or something. But don't create an unrelated race of knife-eared fish-people that drink blood and call them elves.

No, most CRPGs are simultaneously unfinished garbage that are shoved out the door as development finally has to reach a hasty conclusion, combined with being boring slogs with shoddily put together storylines, uninteresting characters, nonexistent choice and consequences, and some of the worst combat mechanics, encounter design and enemy variety, which is all accepted since CRPGs are a joke of a genre where you can succeed with low quality trash since everyone that plays them will just try and play everything since they're so starved for new games and content. CRPGs are easily the worst genre of video games right now, no quality studios are working on them at all, and for good reason.

Having replayed DA2 earlier this year I can honestly say I didn't hate it near as much as I thought I would. It's still vastly inferior to Origins, but it had a good foundation that could have resulted in a good game if actually given more than a single year to develop the whole thing.
Veilguard doesn't have that. It's dogshit from its very core. Its problems didn't arise from being rushed out the door but from being developed by fucking troglodytes. It's tainted in its entirety.

Indeed. It's true about gaming in general. And it's not just playtime, since unfun playtime is a waste, games can tell a story and be immersive in ways that other media doesn't attain, since you are an actor in the story. It's a unique medium that has it's own value that other media can't attain.

It's worth mentioning that a 10 dollar paperback book can fundamentally change your entire life depending on the topic, so theoretically nothing beats educational or philosophical literature.

There are also some things that are hard to put a value to, like if you look at the cost of mtg cards or 40k armies most people would scoff and say what the fuck, but making friends and going to tournaments as a group and those social experiences are worth it to me. It's an excuse to hang out in person in the digital age, and every time I travel to an event it's an excuse to see a new city.

Practical hobbies should be mentioned as well though. Gardening can feed you, fishing can feed you, firearm proficiency can save your life or the lives of your family, and many other sort of things.

So it's good to have a variety of hobbies, some entertaining like videogames, some social like traditional games, some intellectual like reading or school, and some practical like martial arts or gardening. That makes a healthy and holistic person. And many of these need not be expensive.

Wow video games are real hobby right let me tell you a about my life story

I was a millionaire before I was 30, I own 2 small but successful small businesses, I have a good degree from a top20 school, I've dated several people all good relationships that lasted years and ended amicably, I have a large social circle both in person and online, I have a good relationship with my parents, and I am fit from practicing martial arts and cooking healthy my entire life. The idea that you have to be a loser to enjoy videogames has pretty much never been true, because videogames are just a hobby among dozens of other hobbies. There are people who neglect themselves and their relationships with videogames, just like there are people who neglect themselves and their relationships with chasing money, chasing women, chasing other meaningless hobbies like trains/cards/fishing/whatever, porn, gambling, drugs, or a million other things. One hobby is not inherently more time wasting than any other, the only thing that matters is you don't neglect yourself or your relationships. It doesn't matter if your free time is spent on videogames or a dozen other things. Hell, even traditionally useful or productive hobbies like reading aren't actually healthy if all you read is political propoganda disguised as entertainment like we see so much of these days, or empty hackneyed fiction or whatever. Even religion can be like that. So this jab at videogames specifically is just author bias.

Finished Travelling At Night demo. The game is just one area that seems to be right after the tutorial/introductory area. Took me roughly 6 hours with some breaks while reading everything, or almost everything.
The character building mechanics are pretty unique, haven't seen anything like that before. You have deffirent types of experience that you can spend on upgrades but every stat or skill can only be upgraded using specific type of experience. While cool on paper I feel like it might push people into picking choices depending on what kind of experience they give as opposed to roleplaying. But that's the problems of those who can't roleplay, so whatever. Plus every parameter can be improved using any of 2 or in some cases 3 different principles so there's some wiggle room. Not sure if I got super unlucky, but I haven't succeded a single check bellow 70%, and there were a lot of skill checks.
Every failed skill check as well as some actions and dialogue options will raise one of several negative statuses that you will have to manage throughout the game just like you did in Cultist Sim. Trace, which is your notoriety pretty much, so far seems to be the most annoying one since you gain it by needlessly snooping around and asking questions, which is exactly what you want to do when playing this sort of game. The only way to keep it in check so far seems to be to not stay in one place for more than 1 night and to move around a lot, preferably by different routes.
There's crafting because it wouldn't be a Secret Histories game if there wasn't. You craft various amulets, and rituals that can be required for certain dialogue options. You can only craft them at specific altars so I can see it becoming a chore to run back and forth to craft what you need.
Money's tight, couldn't buy any equipment in town and had to set train station on fire to sneak onto the train instead of buying a ticket.

Game greatly expands on the Secret Histories lore. It is no longer schizobabble like in Cultist Sim or BoH, but it still keeps it vague enough to keep the aura of mystery. The Hours are gone and the world is falling apart. The plot is that you've been eaten out by worms before being brought back and are now chasing a woman who can help you regain memories or something.
All in all I liked it. Troglodytes who are afraid of words and only want to see numbers go up - keep moving. People who liked the previous 2 games - you're gonna enjoy it

It has to evoke the feeling of a tabletop rpg.

But to answer better than just "it's vibes bro", a proper crpg should have some number of these things:

1. Choices and consequences. You need to be able to make some kind of choice that affects the world, the plot, or at the very least your acquaintances.
Adlibs where an npc comments on your class or race is not a consequence.

2. Some form of tabletop mechanic. You do not need to be playing a literal translation of a ttrpg right down to 1 action 1 reaction per turn based turn, but have some basis. have character classes, stats, leveling, and some kind of diceroll even if it's hidden or abstracted. The NWN and BG1 rtwp systems are good examples of being based on a ttrpg system but taking it in their own rtwp direction.

3. Player freedom. Going along with the ability to make choices, is the ability to approach things reminiscent of how you can approach things while at the table with your friends. This where many jrpg start to get iffy, since they meet many of the criteria but rarely have player freedom.
No game developer with current technology is going to be able to actually recreate the freedom of a real human gm coming up with the story that reacts to the sheer freedom of a ttrpg player's ideas, but a true, high quality crpg should make the attempt, and give as many options and reactions as reasonably possible.

Mass Effect, Dragon Age, Kotor, Swtor, NWN, are a few games off the top of my head that meet these criteria, yet there is some uncertainty among some.

A game like, let's say Diablo, meets some of the criteria at first glance, but lacks important ones. Leveling and classes alone don't make a game a crpg, it has to actually have some amount of choice&consequence.

There are some games that are legitimately hard to decide though, like Witcher. It meets the criteria, but it doesn't *feel* like a proper crpg. Thankfully there's no need to be anal and we're happy to discuss any game that meets most.

>I really lliked Sunless Sea. Is it for me?
Well, it's nothing like the Sunless Sea. Sunless Sea is a great game with a cool and unique world to explore, and so is this, but the gameplay is very different. SS has a very gamey for lack of a better word gameplay loop: you get the goods, you haul them somewhere they are needed, you go back while managing your resources. You also get to explore weird new places and cultures in the proces. There's no story so to speak, only the world to explore.
TaN is a crpg, which means that it's very story heavy, and it takes after Disco Elysium school of design, so it's mostly just reading, and enjoying the story/world while occasionally managing your skills and equipment. If you're down for that, then I think you might enjoy it, because the setting of Secret Histories is no less cool and interesying than that of SS

>JA2
1. can choose the build of my mercs, can choose to attack at night or daytime, some small dialogue options like surrendering

2. not based on a literal tt ruleset, but close enough. is turn-based, 'classes' come from specialization (melee, ranged, stats, etc)

3. player has ultimate freedom, and can choose to head immediately for deidranna on day 1

JA2 is a CRPG

Indeed. The Jagged Alliance games are great, and hit some of the criteria. Enough that it's reasonable to talk about them, as long as you are approaching it as a roleplaying experience. Which reminds me of one of the criteria that I didn't have room for, which is that you need some amount of roleplaying.

I will be discussing Zero Company when it comes out in a couple weeks for the same reason. I will be roleplaying my mercenary character, making decisions in dialogue about who to recruit and which missions to take and how ruthless or nice my company is, I will be assigning classes and experience points to my operatives, and last but not least I will be using a semi-random dice abstraction to determine how well and how often my operatives hit in combat. What is yet to be determined is just how much player freedom there actually is in that game, such as siding with or against the republic, attacking Commander Skywalker or not, and other such things I would want from a true star wars rolepalying game. We shall see. The possibility exists that it will end up simply being a tactical turn based strategy game with light roleplaying elements, rather than a true crpg. Only time will tell.

It is a joy to discuss videogames I love. I pray for the day someone discussing videogames and putting a little effort in their posts is not a noteworthy event.

1. Choices and Consequences. Wrex tries to kill you if you don't cure the genophage and is lost as a companion. The rachni do not show up or the final fight if you don't help them. Your alignment matters, and certain quest resolutions and dialogue are unavailable.

2. A soldier class character and an operative class character have meaningful dierences in gameplay. You cannot position like a soldier can as the other classes, you cannot use the same weapons, you have different shield/hp, etc. Nobody can do what the Infiltrator does. Nobody but the tech gets summon pets. The classes meaningfully play differently. The amount of damage you do is also semi-random in a threshold determined by a weapon's min and max damage values.

3. Player freedom. You can kill Samara to recruit Morinth, and you keep it a secret from everyone. This is revolutionary, and has rarely been matched in any crpg since.

4. Roleplaying. You alignment is yours and is determined by your roleplaying. The vast majority of major decisions in this game, from the genophage to the rachni to the small things like how you treat Conrad Verner are perfect, prime examples of roleplaying. The recurring character Conrad is a case perfect example to other developers how to give the player opportunities to roleplay, and they even touch on C&C since he has quest rewards. Whether to cute the genophage or help the rachni are questions the player is asked about philosophy. Should a race suffer from the sins of the father? Will your character do something conclusive and harsh because someone *might* be a bad guy in the future? Do you put the interests of humanity before the interests of the galaxy at large? These are philosophical, roleplaying questions.

In conclusion, Mass Effect is a crpg. Not only is it a crpg, but it's also a good one.

Here's another neat thing. When youc reate a character you can choose his background among 4 available: an exorcist, a writer, a magician, a doctor. And choosing one doesn't invalidate the others. You still were all 4 of those things, it's just that one of them is clearly more important to you and ha left a bigger impact on you as a person. You will still find out tidbits from all 4 of those periods as you play the game. I don't know if it will affect the game outside of you starting skill proficiencies, but I just thought it was neat

I don't think they're gonna add more backgrounds. You're not creating a brank slate character. You're playing an established guy by the name Spencer Hobson, and there's only so much a guy can do in his life time. The timeline of his life is given in the description of each background: graduated the seminary, was a priest for several years during WW1 before having a crisis of faith, became a journalist, then a stage magician untill the bureau recruited him, worked for the bureau, studied medecine, until joining the army to work as an army doctor, got hollowed out by the worms and went missing for a decade, missing WW2. The inexorable tide of time. You can watch the credits for ME/DA and see all the names change over the course of the franchises, including the directors and lead writers. It's not really a coincidence that bioware had several of the best games ever made, then all the names in the credits changed, and their games got progressively and steadily worse over time.

A few things are to blame. One is that the videogame industry became the largest entertainment industry in the world, overtaking movies, television, and theme parks. So naturally, suits with business degrees and no eye for art or talent started moving in when they smelt money. It wasn't a niche hobby for nerds made by nerds for nerds anymore. It was the next money gold mine, and people with that attitude started marketing themselves to companies. Nerds with interests in history, art, archeology, and philosophy started having to listen to MBA's make deadline and publishing decisions for their companies. So the artistic product suffered.

Large scale investment firms are primarily to blame. When the videogame industry became the largest entertainment industry in the world, the largest investment firm in the world, Blackrock, followed. Their CEO, Larry Fink, is a billionaire who uses the investment firm to push various ideas into media. They actually make content decisions with publishers and including certain things in media is actually part of the investment dealings, and Fink is open about it and has done ted talks and interviews about it. So games and movies and tv shows have an investment firm literally telling them what to include if they want money. It's actually crazy the more you look into it. And the companies that do business with them are very often the ones that have mysterious declines in quality over time, because people not invested in the art are making decisions.

It's not normal, but it was normal for Bioware. A lot of former Bioware devs have talked about how they didn't know how fucked up their studio culture was until they left Bioware.
You also have to remember that Bioware often winged it with no cohesive vision and counted on actually slapping together a finished game in a fraction of that 2 year dev time.

My biggest issue with ME3 is that it sucks as a conclusion. Even the romances fall apart, unless you romance Bioware's favourite princess Liara or use mods.
I guess the big issue was that Bioware fell for JJ Abrams' mysterybox and never bothered to figure out what was the motivation of the Reapers to begin with.

Well nobody else talks to me anyway so I'll blogpost at you.
ME3 has the most infuriating gameplay on the highest difficulty on which I always play. The entire fucking thing is
Bullet. Sponges.
I think this pic is of that one area where I always lose my mind.
Huge station, and the area is layered like.. imagine a rice field.. lots of stairs up and down but you can see over the entire area.
This fucking hellhole spawns so many fucking enemies that make drones, repair robots, set up turrets and ofc an Atlas too. They are so fucking hard to kill, you are sitting in place for 5-10minutes unloading relentlessly into these hyper armored fuckcunts... and if you dare die, you get to wade through this 10min section again.
Like..
ME3 is a bullet sponge game. Nothing more.
>>
>>577126363
Reapers motivation should have never been explained
I personally blame harbinger in me2 being a fucking pathetic "I get you next time, Shepard!" clown compared to the Sovereign in me1
>>
>>577126430
That sounds quite shit
I remember ME2 already wasn't as much fun as ME1 gameplay wise
>>

me3's reapers felt smaller than they should have been
>>
>>577126363
I still think that if ME3 had simply done the crucible as a regular kill the reapers button nobody would've had a problem with it
>>
>>577126430
I never did have much problems with ME3 fights, but at the same time I never played on the highest difficulty.
But I do like ME3's combat more than ME2's. It's still a shooting gallery, but it does a better job masking the fact that it's a shooting gallery.
With ME2, I always had this problem that fights were happening just because, just like in DA2, where that's the only gameplay loop you'll ever have. ME3 at least tries to make it more interesting (and justifiable).
>>
>>577126741
He's lying, compared to magical armor that prevents you from using abilities on enemy in me2, nothing was as bad in me3. And SNiper weapon still has inane damae

It sure is. I tanked WoW raid bosses that went down faster than some ME3 sections. And these missions can take fucking ages so you are stuck in there grinding down bullet sponges for ages.
>>577126807
Yeah I don't recommend that difficulty. It's a horrid slog cause all it does is up their hp pool into the stratosphere while giving them more damage.
>>577126952
I'm not. I played that game countless times.

Now, what we playing today... I kinda wanna romance Hendrix..
Does this game come with awkward sex scenes?
>>
>>577126785
Nah, I would still have a problem with it, because the Crucible is still a deus ex machina that Liara pulled out of her ass.
I would be fine with it if it the Crucible was the focus of ME2 and we spent the entirety of ME2 looking for a way to stop the Reapers and came across this solution. But we spend whole of ME2 faffing about in a plot that has nothing to to with anything and then in ME3, when the Reapers are literally outside of our window, we go "holy shit, we need to find a deus ex machina to stop them".
Incidentally, ME2 is my least favourite of the trilogy.
>>
>>577127047
They're all the fade-to-black type, you'll just appear in your room with them afterwards with some small, sweet dialogue from your partner
So far that's how all of Owlcat's games have worked
>>
>>577127205
How disappointing..
But I expected as much. The animations in this game are of the lowest of low quality. NPCs don't even turn around like humans in a cutscene. The model just awkwardly rotates in place.

I am so hoping that The Expanse finally goes all in on the sex scenes.

Most isometric CRPGs are like that, with I think only BG3 having animated sex scenes
I'm personally not bothered by it, I felt rather awkward in the "roleplay the sex yourself" part of romance in D:OS2

Not bothered? Anon, it seems you've never experienced the joy of playing with your mate who plays a Lizard wearing a thong called BadDragon while playing a female in underwear yourself and having horrendous sex with the NPCs while in VC.
There is an option to not let the other watch the scene but that's for pussies.
We had so many keks with those sex scenes.

Sadly none of my friends like CRPGs, and the only time I played D:OS2 in co-op, we only got to the dragon in Fort Joy before the lads quit

i pondered really hard on /v/ and wanted to share my thoughts, crpgs is objectively a genre for women (halfling sex), and bg3 isn't woke it's just literally designed to appeal to women, that's why it has gay vampires, bear sex, and the guys are twinkish instead of being brutes
crpgs are objectively a more woman-oriented genre because it's just lighter/slower rpgs that are dialogue heavy
in the same way visual novels are objectively, relative to other game genres, for women
>>
>>577130772
crpgs req more reading = req more intelligence = not for women
you are a woman if you hate crpgs.

It's based on the Dark Heresy TTRPG insead of the Rogue Trader one, so there are some differences. I wouldn't say it has totally different mechanics, a lot of it is still familiar from Rogue Trader, but many of the similar things have been tweaked or changed in some way. It's different enough to feel new, but don't go in expecting a totally new system akin to going from WOTR to Pillars of Eternity or something.
The precision attacks, limb damage, interruptions, being able to adjust the initiative order during combat, attacks and abilities that take multiple turns to go off, buffs/extra things you slot into your abilities, and the armour system are all new. All the Archetypes have been tweaked and changed in some ways, you now trade with money (or items on occasion), the lethality is greater, and morale is now per unit, including the enemies

For women, romance always involves sex.
That's why their books, shows and games all have sex in them. Sex with bulls, bondage sex, sex with vampires, sex with bears, etc.

They were never good and never improved, with extremely terrible and childish writing plaguing their titles
Their prior accomplishments were reevaluated and found wanting. Their "kings of RPGs" title revoked. They couldn't stand against their competition. They died in 2011 where they released a turd that was Dragon Age 2 and every other developer utterly humiliated them that year, including random slavs with Witcher 2, who did every single thing they tried to do, but better.

The RPG genre is weak. Very weak. Probably the weakest traditional genre in gaming

Always has been.

There are only three RPGs that can reasonably be put into a top 10 all-time GAMES list without being laughed, booed and egged off-stage. They are:

>Jagged Alliance 2
>Fallout
>Deus Ex

These three immortal masterpieces approach perfection even though they are tremendously ambitious. As such, they would not look out of place in a top 10 that included the likes of Civilization, X-COM and Master of Orion.

Indeed, strategy is so damn strong, and such a TITAN of gaming, that we could only fit one of those three RPGs in. And it would HAVE to be Jagged Alliance 2. Because it's 10 times more complex than the other two and has actually got a strategy component, not just tactical and role-playing components. The fact that it seamlessly integrates these components = God-tier in gaming.

Take the top-ranked RPG, Planescape: Torment. Now, put it in a top 10 with DOOM. Everyone'd be like, "What? Get that OUT". Because it's mostly just words.

Thank you for reading, and have a lovely day.
