Reading Coherent Light, it kind of makes me realize just how difficult to bring to life the two new girls are. Jimushiny went through this too. I guess Haruki has a bit of an easier time, you can use her artistic side and her general fluffiness to let her shine. Give her dialogue that fits her and also lets the character come through. Hana, on the other hand, feels like she might as well not be here. Completely transparent and melded into the background, not a single thing she said felt Hana-like.Jimushiny eventually found its footing, I wonder if this will too.

It was actually really, really nice seeing that in a manga format, where images can be used to accentuate it rather than just words. As an analogy, Haruki is a pigment of paint. A new color. She increase the options in your palette. You can incorporate her into a drawing, and it adds a new flavor. It is a color that particularly accentuates Luca's black too, helps draw outlines around her, and jimushiny as a whole is focused strongly on Luca, so this allows Haruki to be very useful and relatively easy to incorporate. It did struggle with Hana, it was a bit too restrained for a while. Like Haruki, I'd use an analogy here. Instead of a color, Hana would be like a black hole. Hana's presence is small. This leads people (both in story and in real life) to assume she's light and easy to handle. But it's an incredibly dense thing, despite its size. It's hard to figure out, as it just absorbs even light and lets no information escape if you get close to it. Hana as a center of gravity bent every character that appeared in that chapter. ShinyP was like this from the moment the chapter started. The journalist sees her as an easy target and prey upon her, but she gives him nothing. Every attempt just passes through her, no information escaping. Luca sees her as a small thing that needs protection, gets close and ends up being pulled into her conflict, where it is Luca that ends up being saved by her.This is a difficult thing to handle. A story like Coherent Light, which isn't focused on these things, is best ignoring them and treating them weakly. There's potential there, as Hana and Fuyuko do eventually get together in even SC proper, but that's far off into the future, and outside of Coherent Light's scope. It's also hard to imagine Coherent Light ShinyP being bent out of shape.
