Do you all mind if I ramble a bit about Sonic 1's levels? After replaying it, I feel slightly enlightened.

The best level in the game: you can go fast, or dilly-dally and explore to find stuff. Very fun, even if the raising platforms in the second act are a big pain in the arse. Sadly it's the only zone in the game to have destructible walls and I never understood that. Sonic Mania is the same, the whole "use shields to change the world" is contained to Green Hill Zone.MARBLE ZONE: my favourite zone, I think. The music is really nice, slower and more contemplative, and mixes really weird with the slower gameplay, where you have to wait for blocks to float, or slowly push blockes. It's a slower level but it's fair, the traps are calculated to be lowered when you arrive, so that you can see them springing up, and know in advance where they'll land.SPRING YARD: I don't know why but I dislike this zone. Something about it just irks me. Probably because of some even of my personal life that I temporarily forgot but associated to this zone, I just dislike it. On a more objective note, it's a weird zone that mixes fast areas while traps to punish you if you're not observant. And also features the first of Robotnik's Sonic imitation, which is a pain to deal with. Whenever I play Spring Yard Zone, I usually just zoom through it to quickly finish it.LABYRINTH ZONE: my generation's Subnautica. Honestly not that bad, through you have to know the levels well because you sometimes can find bubbles sources close to one another, and then you find very pretty far away, so you might get in danger a few times. The worst parts are some issues when porting the game to Sonic Origins, or some bubble sources being traps, with the bubble clipping through the ceiling too quick for you to catch it. Music sounds like some swimming pool.
I do have a beef with Labyrinth Zone, though: if you fuck up, you can land between the... the cork stoppers, and get stuck at the bottom of the screen while the water rises. There's a way to lower the water again, I did it by accident, but then I fucked up my jump again and ended up drowning.FUN FACT: after the last check point in Labyrinth Zone Act 3, there are no more rings. You can find a shield, but that's all. So if you drown on this screen? You go through the gauntlet with just your shield and Sonic's vulnerable body. If that happens, rush if you see gargoyles heads (their first shot is slower than their repeated shots), and brake if you see spikes.

Replaying it, I think it's probably one of the toughest levels, and I fucking understand why it's so late in the game: you can't kill anything in there, enemies either self-destruct or are invincible, so you have to dodge them all, and if you take the bottom route in the first Act, the speed will send you to your doom.And also, seriously, this isn't a destructible wall?!?SCRAP BRAIN ZONE: the Sen's Fortress of Sonic. I used to speed through this zone, but in my last playthough, I went ahead and used routes I never used before.And it was a fucking catastrophe, I couldn't keep my rings more than 10 seconds before walking into a trap.

SCRAP BRAIN ZONE Act 3: literally Hitler.Take everything horrible about Labyrinth Zone, and make it worse. If Labyrinth Zone is the Sen's Fortress of Sonic 1, then SCRAP BRAIN 3 is the Anal Rodeo of Sonic 1.Bubbles are pretty distant from one another, so you might have to often come back to refill after an obstacle blocked you and you're not sure you can get to the next one in time.And also, the final stretch of the level is diabolical: you have a long corridor with no bubbles, and a TV as a distraction in the way, followed by a tough jump (tough if you're bad or panicking, though), followed by one of the worst thing in Sonic, that fucking bubble trap. I died to Scrap Brain 3 more than to anything else in this game, because the bubble spawning rate on this peculiar source is completely fucked and will only spawn a bubble after you drown.IGNORE IT and keep climbing, the water barely reaches the top of the screen here. Ignore the fucking bubbles, they will kill you.I ended up beating this level with no shield, no rings, and enemies on my tail.
FINAL BOSS: not much to say. Music is awesome but not frantic, which seems to be a recurring theme in Sonic games, the boss music seem to be slower than stage themes, as if to encourage a different kind of gameplay.If I knew more about music, I'd try to compare how fast stages can take you, and compare their associated songs. I remember Star Light being traitorous with that, because it has very tight slopes that make you fast very quickly, but the music is almost a lullaby.Anyway, the Final Zone, you know it. All of you do.

I got Superstars since it's on sale. It's alright so far (Zone 3 atm) except I feel like there are too many special stages. Like here's the chaos emerald ring, and here's twenty blue rings with coins in them, and don't forget about the fifty checkpoint bonus stages.
