In Arknights, towers (operators) can be placed anywhere, have lots of complex abilities, you got tons and tons of towers, and you can destroy them and rebuild them anywhere pretty quickly. Enemies are intricate and designed around you doing this, and there's a back and forth between those concepts. When you do that, the gameplay turns into more of a tiled-based real-time strategy with a tower defense foundation. There are players who try to maintain the spirit of traditional TD in og Arknights. Like some Japanese players try to do "no manual skill activation, no redeployment" runs, where the idea is you place operators down once and don't touch them. That's about as old TD as Arknights gets though. Also today, og Arknights has a bunch of different modes and they're all way different from the "classic" Arknights gameplay anyway. You have roguelike, autochess, clash of clans, card combat, minigame modes, a base mode, etc. Arknights gameplay is more like you have operators with a TD-based design, and then you can play a bunch of different games with them. The classic gameplay is just a small piece of Arknights now.

I then spent my time doing all the factory stuff before moving onto Wuling but you can't get the best gear until you unlock the plans in Wuling. At that point I did all my pulls and caught up to the end of 1.0, worked on the starting factory and produced some gear on some of the characters but didn't upgrade it.If what I remember was correct then you shouldn't have to struggle much with the factory to do all of that. You don't even actually need to do the factory for that amount of gear components since they drop from destructibles in the zones.
