I don't believe the progenitor element affects DoT damage the same way that mods do, although the progenitor % would affect the base damage of the DoT. I think but I'm not really sure that if you use an ability to get a DoT from a base element, the corresponding mods will boost the DoT even if the base elements are being combined on the mod screen. That's really convoluted phrasing explaining it without an example, but what I mean is like if you mod viral+heat on a gun then get a tox proc from Saryn Toxic Lash or Oraxia Silken Stride, I'm pretty sure the tox mod(s) should boost the damage of that tox DoT despite being combined into viral. And a toxin progenitor would still boost the damage of the DoT, but it counts as base damage rather than modded elemental damage. If you're using Acid Shells with Oraxia or Saryn, you typically want multiple toxin mods because Acid Shells can trigger a toxin proc which will then trigger back into Acid Shells.
