The crew personality mechanics in UBOAT are very silly.I discovered that merely being spotted by an enemy boat already triggers them. I have prematurely ended all campaign missions before early 1940, so since November I basically have just been going on patrols, looking for single bong ships, startle them and chase them around until every crewman gets a personality. Already had 4 heart attacks within 20 dudes, and almost half of them cowards. One guy was really persistent in breaking down; shame I can't court martial him for that.Anyhow, it's now only early January, so I'll be doing this until March. By that time I should have enough sea wolves even for a VII.The personality system itself seems kind of silly because as I understand, a sea wolf is basically resistant to morale, so having a crew of only sea wolves means morale becomes a no-issue.
on the one hand doing night missions makes it really hard to see where I'm going and makes going into VRS by mistake while trying to transition to hover inevitableon the other hand it's cool as fuck so it's hard to say whether it's bad or not
>>577779662>>577780014I'm going to try running this dogshit mission.
I immediately take off and a UH-1 spawns behind me. As I reach cruise I am sent a message of 2 downed pilots. I tuned up their emergency beacons and they are fully working so far.
>>577876661Huh, I must have been doing something wrong. You're using the ARC-9 or the ARC-UD?
>>577878880ARC-9, and the scripting is broken and it won't load the downed pilot. On my 2nd run it wouldn't even get the beacon to work. The mission is 3 years old, appears to not be maintained, and probably using the same CTLD script that was broken and only recently fixed. Otherwise it's fun.
also on my first run I was too distracted setting up the weapons and ran over the convoy kek
>>577879109Well, at least I know it wasn't just me. That sucks since the idea of the mission is cool. At least I can make rescue missions in briefing room, I just wish I had more granular control over what spawns where.

This signal (which I can't change for whatever reason) is at 124Mhz AM.The ARC-UD has the 6 preset channels, the 6th of which is 124.1Mhz AM. Is this going to pick up the signal, because I'm not seeing anything so far and I don't know if it's a bug with the mission or that .1 makes a difference.

I'm the guy making that old soviet airport on WED Xplane12 a while ago that a flight school works on. Funny thing is the asphalt runway wasn't used "officially", it was basically a big ass taxiway. The actual runway is the grass runway besides it. and if the asphalt runway if its used at all is mostly when airshows happen and the aircraft need hard surfaces. Makes sense because they teach on Yak-52, Aн-2 and A-27. So No ground control, PAPI or anything like that.
>>577942514Why though? Why would you not us a hard runway, do gliders use the airfield?
>>577942874Apparently the Soviet aircraft like A-27 or Yak-52 benefits from soft surfaces more (less wear). They do use gliders and because the runway is basically abandoned and repurposed by DOSSAF as part of a flight school for GA and acrobatics, is not on its best state either.
>>577938059>Take huey for a mission>Take off from helipad>Navigate succesfully, do a mission flawlessly>Get back to the airfield>Position myself perfectly over the helipad>Foot slides down from the rudder pedals>Crash

If I manage to not cock that up then I just slam it into the ground. helis r hard
>>577943350Now that i think about it, I should make both runways , because they indeed use the asphalt one, just rarely and for jets in airshows. is just that the grass one is the one used daily. and I think is the best approach

I've been using a curve on the throttle so there's more granularity on the lower end but then I find myself throttling up too fast on the higher end.I've been watching guides as well which say not to be too fast/heavy with your inputs but I'm really finding it hard to nail the sweet spot, I end up overcorrecting and getting my rudder inputs confused.

>>577949653Try to practice hovering taxi over the airfield. It has helped me back when I've been learning helis in DCS. Also use your autopilot channels in the hip. I see that you don't have them on.
>>577952592You just need to build some muscle memory so that you know exactly where the cyclic, collective, and pedals are supposed to be in relation to each other at all times. You have to basically learn how to just think and the helicopter does what you want, not react to what it's doing and try to correct it.
lurker here but I'd say I'm almost past the hurdles mi-8 anon is having so some stuff I think helped/would have helped>train just going from cruising to a hover without picking a particular spotpick a part of a map full of referrence points and just, without picking a spot, go from cruise at any altitude to hover just above trees/house smoothly, should allow you to get a better feel of where you end up at the end of the manoeuvre and you should focus on how the helicopter behaves during the exerciseit made me realise some of my approaches where too steep and I needed to start descending earlier or use a different approachyou can practice straight approaches, turning into the hover, doing a full circle, "combat stops"sadly I think you just need more practice to get it to click in your head, one of the big breakthrough in helicopter flying is internalising that it's not a self correcting system in hover : you can't throw a random amount of cyclic to counter a drift and return to neutral because if you were drifting, chances are what you feel is neutral isn't and you'll start drifting in the same direction again.what helped personally : I stopped looking at the control display upper right or to try to find cyclic positions that give me "good hover" or trying to find the perfect trim, I approach every hover like it needs a tailored answer and it helped.how the helicopter is behaving is more important than where your controls sit in the red square (that might have just been me trying to reproduce what I saw in videos)yes you'll dance the swan lake with your heli for a bit more, I still do sometimes but it does get better, imo you need to get that feel before trying to "be ahead" of the helicopter but it comes pretty easy after getting the feel.I personally don't like curve on heli, sure you get a low sensitivity center but if you need more it adds a lot to the guesswork, I just lower sensitivity (I keep it straight but make it a bit more horizontal)
>>577970523 (me) holy shit that was longer than I thought, anyway my pc hasn't been able to run dcs for years now and most of my recent experiences were nuclear option, a small rc helicopter and hijong park's defender patrol this little game showed me the mi-8 didn't teach me proper collective to anti-torque pedals coordination, everytime I even look at my collective my nose starts wandering left or right which is a problem when missiles need a hover that doesn't deviate too much to not severe the TOW cableturned my virpil gimbal into a deadstick and took out the spring from my pedals so all I need is a proper collective for a full heli setup
>>577971509>turned my virpil gimbal into a deadstick and took out the spring from my pedals so all I need is a proper collective for a full heli setupThe collective makes a night and day difference, you'll wonder how you even flew before. I run basically the same dead stick setup as you.

The one thing that makes me consider the curves is >>577971509>turned my virpil gimbal into a deadstick and took out the spring from my pedals so all I need is a proper collective for a full heli setupI'm probably never going to do this because I like to fly fixed wing as well and don't want to have to go back and forth. I get what you mean with full strength cyclic inputs needing more guesswork, but currently I'm at the stage where even when I'm in level flight I often cannot trim the copter properly because I feel like I can't get the EXACT small deflection needed to get it right
>>577972182the deadstick is really nice but the pedals (crosswinds) still have the cam and so there's a huge center that is annoying when I'm working nearby, should probably see if I have the extras from the box to get a gentler one or maybe just remove it entirely, idk how it's gonna feel on fixed wings tho>>577972228I don't pay enough attention to 4chin to notice threads are near death, truth is, I don't even know how you tellI just show up to a thread I think might be worthwhile and read until it dies or I forget>>577976806I used the shallower ramp and grew to dislike curve (on helis) back when I used a regular stick, on dead stick I have no curves or change from default 1x linear ramp at all, where I put the stick is my 1-to-1 input, no trimmingonly problem is I have to find the sweet point between "fingertips" like irl choppers and stiff enough to hold itself and not fall to the sideat the end of the day curves are just something you'll get used to if you practice with them, I just found them bothersome

Apparently there's MSFS drama over Paris CDG airport addons>Aerosoft, PESIM and azrsim all announce they're working on the airport>Aerosoft pulls out, claiming difficulties with the complexity of the project>PESIM and azrsim continue>inibuilds resells PESIM scenery through their own store>suddenly inibuilds announce they're working on Paris CDG>azrsim pulls out, says they'll work on something else>PESIM say they're pissed off a partner would compete against them, but will carry onI suppose it's the nature of the business when you don't know who is working on what. inibuilds and aerosoft both released an A340 for example.
Thoughts on sim rate in flight sims? Would you use it for a long haul flight? Would you just set the game up and go to bed? I've never done a flight longer than five hours, but I've also never seen a use for long haul planes like the 777, 747 etc in sims because I don't want to spend 8+ hours flying. I wonder if increasing the sim rate to say 2x in cruise would be reasonable, or would lessen the experience.
>>578392196The question is, why would you do that to yourself in the first place. The next question is, would it lessen the experience for YOU?
>>578393338I suppose the appeal is getting to fly big planes. Yes you could fly a 747 from London to Paris but it's probably overkill. I'm not sure if it would lessen the experience, maybe I'll try it and find out.
>>578394303I heard Japan uses widebodies for domestic routes
>>578402648It's funny you mention that as I was just looking into it, apparently the 747SR was developed just for the Japanese domestic routes.
>>578392196Totally reasonable. After all - it's a sim. I don't fly flights longer than 4 hours and idea of leaving the computer when plane is flying on autopilot for many hours while I'm sleeping seems weird to me. Imagine playing Silent Hunter 3 without time acceleration.>Start the game>Set the course>"Jawohl Herr Kaleun, ve vill be zere in one month">Leave fucking computer on for one month and setup the alerts when something happens on the way>Don't wash yourself because of the immersion>Whole room stinks just like an uboot>Reach destination, patrol for 2 weeks real time>Hunt a fucking merchant, it takes all night>Sink him, evade destroyers for 2 days>Return to the port, another month passes>Now you can take a shower and shave your face>Go for another patrol>Operation Paukenschlag starts>"Herr Kaleun, ve vill be on ze patrol for 3 months">Do it for the immersion

>>578417447It can generate DDS files for MSFS 2024 but needs more information, it'll need a paintkit and a lot of babysitting I think. It might take a while and a bit of fiddling.
>>578404738Make sure to keep all your windows closed, with no AC the whole time.
>>578417780With MSFS it might be more doable but I've never understood how people can paint that unwrapped mess without importing it into something like Blender. With Xplane (at least for the m-346) it's a bunch of separate Photoshop files so it might be harder since it needs to match exactly with the other file limits.
>>578418683>how people can paint that unwrapped messIt can be a bit tricky to line up stripes and linear features, but it helps to turn on the wireframe overlay and think of it like a puzzle.DCS has a model viewer at least
>>578404738Not a sim but reminds me that DEFCON has a real-time mode where the games last like, 8 hours.I hate strategy games which is a shame because a game you could have running in the background and doing something else only to get the NUCLEAR ATTACK ALARM would be sick as hell.https://youtu.be/v_nq27ay14UI guess a sim version would be to have a DCS mod or an instance of MSFS with a nuclear bomber that could boot up at any moment while you're on your computer, making it so you have to drop everything and start up and get off the runway to deliver your bombs.>yes I know strategic bombers were usually kept in the air but imagine for a second

God Southern Routes is such a badly designed and shitty and irritating mission. With tonnage wars etc. you at least get the shit you sink to and from the patrol area counted towards your score, but here it only counts ships examined WITHIN the patrol area. Even if you detect them there, but catch them outside, it doesn't count towards the score. Coupled with the very low amount of ships there, that's already extremely annoying. Then they expect you to sink X tonnage, and frankly, so far I have NEVER encountered a false flag ship. And during my first trip I got different coordinates, and guess what? Nothing I did there counted towards anything.Fucking poolacks, I think this is the point where I drop the current campaign again; airplane spam has started again, so everything is just annoying all the time. I did Scapa Flow in a IIA, what more do they want?

A fairly stable ride with a slight lift-off oversteer and a lot of corner angle control on-throttle. Decrease the rear ARB, if it's too drifty (85 N/cm front and 20 N/mm rear for a modern, planted kind of feel). This will work as baseline for something like a Corvette, Camaro, Charger and Mustang. Also, depending on the game, the values posted here are kinda shy of 50%, sans ARBs, which are well beyond 50. Remember kinds, if you do soft springs, do the opposite to the roll bars. Also worth noting, stiffening up the shocks might potentially produce better results. I found those old cars have a lot of body roll, and these settings are still stiffer than what I would run on a modern racecar, but I think that any potential oversteer incindent that would happen due to weight transfer, should be fixed with stiffer shocks.

>>578519131I think IL-2 1946 can cheat a little bit (afaik they can occasionally spot you through their own aircraft, and they don't overheat, but you can turn off engine overheat anyway), but they definitely put up more of a fight than Great Battles AI. You can also have better command of your own wingmen/squadron too in regards to formations, tactics, etc. you can have a lot more aircraft on screen at once too compared to GB, that game tends to go into slowmo if you've got a cpu-heavy mission. I can't remember if the modpacks drastically change AI behavior, but if you want a good single player experience get the BAT modpack. Its pretty big but you can save space by just getting the base WW2 module if you're not interested in the WW1/Jet era expansionsNot sure what Cliffs of Dover is like when it comes to the AI, I have it but never really gave it any playtimeThere's a pretty well regarded WW1 sim called Wings over Flanders Fields with good AI and a great dynamic campaign, it has a WW2 counterpart, "Over the Reich". I think it just has the Battle of Britain/France at the moment

>>578566367>they definitely put up more of a fight than Great Battles AIThat's embarrassing, but it's amazing how well 1946 has aged
>>578566635Great Battles decided to simulate the pilot inside of the plane manipulating controls instead of just simulating the plane like 1946 did. Current-gen IL-2 features far fewer computer-controlled opponents than you could have in 2006, and they can't fly nearly as well.Turns out gameplay takes a hit when you burn your performance on stupid "realism" bullshit and lose the forest for the trees. air forces are starting to mix crewed and uncrewed aircraft in formations. China looks like they're using a two-seater J20 along with an uncrewed stealth drone and a J16 for electronic support. theoretically, the second chair in the J20 is the control center for the drone. but he's not flying it manually like say a Predator operator would, he's setting objectives for the drone and the drone does it. pretty interestingi know the mainstream is all about the gay little flying RC IEDs and making swarms of them but the uncrewed aircraft are where AI is gonna go brazy

>>578632675>>578634783AI is essentially a force multiplier for the "intelligentization" of your military.drones, satellites, radar, early-warning aircraft, and missiles all being able to interpret and share information with each other instantaneously is some Ghost Recon shit. air superiority is now just a bridge to electromagnetic superiority. controlling the EMS is the new win condition
>>578632675>>578634917some examples... like that GJ11 drone is being fed raw data from the entire intelligence-sphere at all times and instantly interprets the "best" course of action towards whatever it's told to do by the J20 wingman...friendly airborne radar on an early warning plane can feed raw RF signature data directly to an unmanned wingman or a surface warship, have it cue up an interceptor missile before you're even on the firing jets' fuckin radarAI can analyze radar pulses 1000x faster than any manual reference library combing and come up with a jamming waveform, which in itself is useful, but it then distributes that countermeasure across the entire strike package before the opp's next pulse arrives
>>578636046theoretically speaking, of course. it clearly is still in development but you can imagine the sort of shit it's useful for pretty easily, and some of these programs are already being shown off in varying capacities. military strategists of the future have their work cut out for them kek

Didn't know that trucking could be so much fun. To be honest, it's not much of a sim, cars drive like on rails... With minimal modding game runs pretty great.I'm Euro based and tried EU Truck Sim 2 too but it's just depressing compared to Murican Truck Sim. European trucks are small, roads are tiny and gamewise, there seems to be stops and gaps all the time which is really annoying. ATS is a much more continuous experience in this sense too. Plus US trucks are cool.
>>578715940To add: one day, we will have this sort of trucking in MSFS with perfect lidar scans but that's probably ten years away from now at least.
>>578591745not a sim
>>578715940>ATS is a much more continuous experience in this sense too.lol my experience is the exact opposite. At some point I stopped playing ATS because you spend 90% of your time in cities waiting for traffic lights. But then again, traffic lights are in the top 3 things of what I hate about driving, and when I play ETS2 or ATS I just want to drive WITHOUT real life traffic bullshit. Traffic jam? Just reload, they're all gone. Traffic light? Doesn't always work with reloading, though I feel like they tend to switch to green. It's still highly irritating. Also, parking in ATS seems to be a lot harder than in ETS2. I actually have parking choice turned off in ETS2 and always just do the "hard" one, whereas in ATS I have the choice dialog enabled because sometimes they want me to park in such a bullshit fashion that I just say "fuck it" and take the easy one. I think I would have way less problems if I could actually see shit in the mirrors.
>>578708729>>578711257This, you'll be fine, you don't even need that many buttons anyway.

>>578735216Yes they're doing a UK rework fortunately, the UK in the game is the oldest part of the map, unchanged since UK Truck Sim in 2010 which was shit back then. It looks nothing like the UK, it's actually quite funny.

>>578734935both got that 'autistic japanese middleware' stink to em
>>578734779lights are more efficient, but they also encourage "aggressive driving". which is why the argument for roundabouts always is the "traffic calming effect" they produce. I.e., make people drive slower.
>>578738598>japanese middlewareThat sums up the Wii honestly, there were very few good games for the console, most of it was shovelware or relied on gimmicks.
>>578738714>lights are more efficientLights might be more efficient in heavy traffic, but roundabouts are better for everything else. Looking for a gap at a busy roundabout is shit, I'd rather have traffic lights than that.
>>578738714>lights are more efficientBy which metric? The time wasted with assholes driving reaaaaaallly slow in order to keep rolling until the next green while traffic behind them piles, or the retards who you can actually see having little moving gears above their heads when the lights turn green and they wait until the car before them starts rolling, when then their tiny chicken brains get the signal to stop stopping and start rolling, costing everyone behind them valuable seconds so that you are still stuck at this light because those assholes couldn't be assed to drive properly oh god I hate them why are you making me live through this shit again I swear I will find you and kill you
>>578738897>everywhere elseeverywhere else doesn't have the traffic density to warrant lighted intersections so that's a moot point. >>578739058there's a reason why commute times are longer in cities like London and Paris than they are in cities like Los Angeles and Dallas. your perception is irrelevant to the reality of the time spent trying to get from one place to another. because your car is 'moving' you feel like you're making progress, even though overall your average speed is lower and average time is slower. this is what I mean by 'traffic calming'.
>>578739474>commuting>in LondonNobody commutes by car in London, you get the tube, train, bus or walk.
>>578739672and all of those are slower as well. which is my point. no matter what you do, driving through American intersections is faster; it's the most efficient way of commuting.
>>578740286Source? I can even find American articles saying they're better. This article states>In every single metric, roundabouts outperformed intersections in terms of efficiency. Average delays were cut by 65%, no more that one-third of vehicles were not in motion at any given time, and the circle never went over 22% of its full capacity.https://priceonomics.com/the-case-for-more-traffic-roundabouts/
>>578740636nta, personally i love roundabouts. You'll still meet retards on the road who don't know how to use them, but you still have much more control over your own safety compared to older intersections.
>>578735520Just in time for MSFS 2026 too!
>>578740636>measuring individual intersectionsdelightfully deceptive. you don't go through one traffic light or one roundabout on your journey, you most likely go through several. on a signal, you're as likely to catch a green as you are a red (actually, with the way they're timed, you're more likely to catch a green. but whatever) whereas with a roundabout you have to slow down for every single one. roundabouts are functionally the same as replacing every signal with a yield sign.
>>578746482>roundabouts are functionally the same as replacing every signal with a yield sign.Which means that unless it's an extremely high traffic area, a roundabout is always faster
>>578746482No they're not, have you ever used a roundabout? You don't even have to stop if you can see it's clear and can drive straight over. If there are three roundabouts in a row you can get through each barely slowing down, with three lights you'll likely have to stop and sit there to wait.

>>578591745i'll speak on the heli piloting part of the game because the flight model itself was pretty gud while the heli controls felt a little bugged.assists off with a hotas: little birds felt drunk and the huey kept rolling right with zero input for some reason. it felt even weirder to fly with assists on so i kept them all off the whole time. it wasn't hard to fly, it was actually enjoyable, but there's some weird control quirks going on for sure. i saw some other people mention a similar experience with their HOTAS. maybe the sensitivity needs to be fucked with but the little bird felt over-corrective, if I tried to roll even slightly it would just keep rolling in that direction until I manually corrected it the other direction and restarted the process. maybe it was just specific setups that got the weird feedback because other people said theirs was fine idk. I didn't really notice a difference with stability assist on so like I said I kept it offi find flying in ARMA for comparison to be braindead easy compared to Wardogs. All the epic fancy maneuvers are doable in Wardogs, but it's way fiddlier. i could fly a heli with my eyes closed in ARMAalso here's a clip of me thinking i was too cool for flares and brake pulling a missile just for it to rubberband into me and explode anyways kek. happened to me twice actually, i think helis go way too fast for the server to parse constantly so your client ping is way far off from where you actually appear on the server lol. just use flairs or pull early I guess
>>578740636roundabouts are theoretically more efficient. in reality, American city planners don't use them because the American public is unfamiliar with them and too stupid to learn so they end up creating more traffic.the smart cities that I've been to are slowly converting previous stoplight intersections to roundabouts one a time, gradually rolling them out in places that are efficient for learning and not so heavily trafficed so the dipshits that live there can get used to them without creating a ton of congestion. i've also lived in a city where the first roundabout they wanted to implement was the most major intersection in the city. there were so many crashes the first few months it was comical
>>578734294EU trucks are shorter which makes turning easier. There's a mod which lets you increase the duration of green lights, this helps a lot. Traffic control is somewhat broken in these games. I think the AI traffic will spawn from the dead ends every time you load in, and it'll take some time until it seems like the area is populated again.
>>578142374Which train is this?
>>578756905Apparently there's a place called Carmel, Indiana which has loads of roundabouts so some yanks get it
>>578758138I've been there multiple times. They did it because the roudabouts intentionally slow traffic at intersections, reducing the severity of intersection collisions. I was raised to call these "traffic circles" on an unrelated note.
>>578758138americans actually did use roundabouts early on in city planning, but we fucked up and did it the wrong way. the early iteration of roundabotus were big and gave cars ENTERING the circle right of way, so people in the circle had to stop and let them in. obvious problems ensued. by 1950 all the American designers figured out that iteration of the roundabout sucked ass and started using traffic lights and signage.in 1960 the brits figured out how to actually use a roundabout, and everyone else has been trying to implement them where possible since it's become common knowledge that they're generally more efficient under the stipulation that people know how to use emsome states even have roundabout-first policies now where instead of a traffic light being default for an intersection, the designers need to try to fit a roundabout if possible

>>578764301To add: I'm still not exactly sure if AI traffic vehicle pack works like this with other mods. I think it does.I should extract these and take a look at the files themselves. It obviously tailed for a more mp coop thing.I'm looking for a way to automate things a bit more, not sure if it can be done besides the timetable stuff. There is not a lot of explanation on what "switching" is in game. I'm tempted to dive more in when I have the time, but it feels like a bit time sucker.
>>578929085Switching is switching from one track to another, so where you see those junctions. It's mentioning speeds because mainline switches will have less angle meaning you can go faster, but switching from a main track to industrial tracks might have to be at a slower speed because it's a sharper turn for your train. The sim aspect is there but it is less robust than Derail Valley, you can sit in the cab and control all the levers manually or you can do it all through the UI. However there is no sand and no wheel slip, but a steep grade can still be too much for one of your trains
>>578909742ah whoops I was thinking of Alliance Peacefighter
>>578932206Not that Switch that mention of, I'm not sure what it means but it was related to freight cars, I'm not sure the terminology but I think has to do with shunting in key points, probably not automate I guess, but I guess orders to aggregate a convoy maybe?
>>578933397Shunting in to key points involves the switches, and 'switching' in to the track you want to shunt the cars in to
>>578933397"Switching" is the term railroads use for sorting rail cars by destination, so named because it uses a rail switch, to sort cars.
>>578933397shunting is simply moving railcars around the railyard to get them out of the way of whatever you need that stretch of track for at the moment.
