The Prologue just feels like it's from a completely different game compared to act 2 and 3. I need a lore question answered.Maybe it's just a consequence of how old the IP is but how exactly do the AIs fended off by the Blackwall exist? On some level they have to run on some kind of physical hardware, cyberspace isn't another fucking dimension no matter how much '80s media may have made it look that way. If they could be isolated to particular hardware you could just shut that hardware down; the only way I see it making any sense is if these AIs have managed to embed themselves on every networked device in existence, making them impossible to get rid of, but are constantly being held off from taking control of them by the Blackwall. That would also mean a huge % of compute power, memory, data storage and network bandwidth is constantly being eaten up by these AIs, making all computing extremely inefficient. It would also mean the world is in an impossibly precarious position and a complete AI takeover at some point is all but certain.

In theory they could just shut off every bit of tech on the "wrong side" and get rid of the problem entirely, but tracking it all down is a huge task that only Netwatch would care to do, and once they do, what is there to stop another Bartmoss-type figure from fucking it all up again, and who would pay them for the trouble? You're right that it it's all going to go to shit, though, and worse than 2023, because people in 2077 decided that they should stick net connections in their brains directly with no off switch.
