The pseudo Dreaming City PvPvE approach they tried early in development apparently went nowhere, which then lead to Ziggler being brought on board to quickly make a product from what they had. But as we see now that was arguably a worse decision because it lead to a self cannibalising playerbase and because the subgenre turned away players that were drawn by the setting and polarising art style.

Why was Bungie obsessed with making it trivially easy to kill Guardians and Ghosts? Makes all of our enemies and achievements seem pathetic when some schmuck with a 9mm can kill us and our ghost with ease. Your average Joe shouldn't be able fight on equal footing with us or our enemies.

Ironically the intention was to make our achievements as THE guardian stand out more. When most of these zombie space wizards die to a stiff breeze we're the only one that just doesn't fucking die. Except that one time we accidentally unraveled ourselves during the eighties training montage but we don't talk about that. There used to be some lore intimation that by virtue of the player existing (and I don't mean our guardian avatar I mean our literal irl person) our guardian is that much stronger for it. One or two of the exotic armor tabs in D2 for ahamkara armor have the lore tab break the fourth wall and directly speak to the player and there's maybe a hint that the Winnower knows we exist outside of the game's universe too (if that final cutscene at the EDZ shard is any indication)
