I hesitate to say this on main due to the very real possibility that Twst will respond by immediately putting out a Sam card and I will look super dumb, but just to throw it into the universe: I wonder if Sam is magicless. The guy in the movie had a thing that put him into connection with other things that had power, it wasn't power he himself had. He was actually a big loser who couldn't do anything on his own and needed supernatural help. Sam has no visible magestone. I dunno, it's always seemed possible to me.
