For me the game got easy when I got Irene ss2, the speed and ease of use just changed everything, then I built elemental teams afterwards. They really didn't announce any of these qol changes did they. They wanted you to find them like easter eggs.
Them accidentally breaking SA by adding the pick one rule system too early will actually save us from pain. The next SA is supposed to be a cancer one, it has a rule that removes 2 sp from your frontline every turn. In the original version, you had to pick all 3 rules for 1.35, so you had to deal with it. In our broken version you can just not pick that rule and call it a day.

Chapter 3 released just after the first event so the only guarantees you had at that point were your reroll SS + Welfare Ruka and event Adel. Earlier banners didn't power creep the OG styles so there wasn't a must incentive to roll and IIRC we didn't even have the first light (megumi 2 and dark (monaka) characters to counter phase 2.Out of the OG styles the only 3 that would meaningfully help you are Seira, Seika and Tama. Tama was considered good, but it took some time until the community realised the value of buffs so shit like Lolita and Yuki were considered top tier for re rolling because of their AOE EX skills to clear dungeon fights. Without acces to crit chance or good buffs you just didn't have the damage to kill it with just your EX skills, so at the end it becomes a long scramble of normal skills and enhances that were hard to survive if you didn't have at least a good AOE heal.The main trick to beat it was to save up all your OD and some EX skills in phase 1 so you can just go all out at the start of phase 2 to break it turn 1. Then use Adel as a blaster to max out your damage potential. Totally doable as a F2P if you knew what you were doing but considering it was at a time were prism 10 was considered THE endgame i don't blame any casual player for losing interest when they got hard stuck.
