All (potentially) interesting idea probably got transferred to Souji because digimon writers have this weird fear of protraying the rival/fujo-pandering male character in too much negative light. That ended up making Kaito a generic weakass bitch with no outright "unlikable" action/trait but no likable one either.

For example Kaito (Survive) actually had this whole unused CG where he got vored by clown. Probably it looks too pathetic or something that they have to rewrite his death scene to be dignified/"self-sacrificial" (ignoring that he was the one who brought it in the first place).
